Foundations Jumpstart has just dropped, bringing with it a fantastic array of new cards and reprints. This set combines stunning art direction - continuing the cool visuals of the main Foundations set - with plenty of exciting cards perfect for spicing up your next Commander deck. If you're after powerful staples, fun synergies, or flavorful additions, there's something here for ya. Here are the top cards to look out for:
Number Seven
Aggressive players rejoice as you get a new tool in your Feather, the Redeemed or Zada, Hedron Grinder decks. If you love buffing up your commander or your creatures to the high heavens, Frontline Heroism is an enchantment that you want in every deck. For 3 mana, this Red enchantment enters the battlefield with a 1/1 Red Soldier with haste. The spice is its second ability: as whenever you target a single creature, Frontline Heroism creates another 1/1 token and copies that spell onto it. Your opponents are sure to feel the pain fast for sure.
Number Six
What, another three-mana value Red permanent that makes tokens? Continuing the theme from the previous card is a 2/2 goblin that soldier that produces a 1/1 Goblin token tapped and attacking whenever one or more Goblins you have attack. General Kreat, the Boltbringer also has a built in Impact Tremors on him. This Boltbringing gobbo doesn't even need haste as its passive triggered abilities can start sowing chaos the turn you plop him down on the field.
Number Five
Disclaimer: I swear I wasn't paid off by any token-loving Commander player, honest! Fumulus, the Infestation is another token making, lifeloss dealing commander from Foundations Jumpstart. For four mana, this Black 2/2 vampire insect has flying, deathtouch, and two other triggered abilities. Whenever any player sacrifices a nontoken creature, it makes a 1/1 flying bug. And whenever an insect, leech, or slug attacks, the defending players loses 1 life and you gain 1 life too. Talk about value. Fumulus slots into different token strategies like ones who want to swarm the board and overwhelm the opposition or aristocrats.
Number Four
Cool anime art aside, Dionus, Elvish Archdruid is sure to be an auto-include in every Elf kindred deck from here on out. For four mana, this 3/3 elf druid daddy only has one ability - but it's a doozy. Dionus gives every elf you control the ability to become bigger (with a +1/+1 counter) and to be untapped the first time they get tapped that turn. This means that mana dorks like Llanowar Elves or Elvish Mystic can potentially tap another time to produce more mana that turn. Also, this can make your elvish army bigger. Being Mono-Green, Dionus slots in any elf commander deck like Lathril, Blade of the Elves, Rhys the Redeemed, or even Galadriel, Elven-Queen.
Number Three
In third place, we have Bristly Bill, Spine Sower. For two mana, this 2/2 has a Landfall ability that adds +1/+1 counters to any target creature you control. Oh, wait. It's not Bristly Bill? Sure got me confused. Scythecat Cub has a lot in common with Outlaws of Thunder Junction's Green mythic. However, while you have to pay five mana to double the +1/+1 counters with old BIll this cat does it for free. Well, it only triggers one time (when Landfall triggers the second time on a turn) and it doubles counters on only one creature but it doesn't have any costs needed. This makes fetchlands like Verdant Catacombs or even Evolving Wilds into buff effects that can mean the difference in winning combat.
Number Two
This three mana 1/1 sproutling is our top 2 pick from Foundations Jumpstart. It has trample but that's not where Shroofus shines. This Green legendary creature gives every Saproling you control the ability to produce 1/1 saprolings equal to the amount of damage they deal in combat. While Shroofus can be at the helm of a commander deck, it works best in the 99 as it can exponentially increase your saproling token generator. Where would the Sproutsire fit? Ghave, Guru of Spores, Slimefoot and Squee, and Nemata, Primeval Warden would benefit greatly from having this new saproling in their lists.
Number One
As of the time of writing, Rev, Tithe Extractor is the most expensive card from Foundations Jumpstart. There could be a number of reasons for this. Perhaps its because of the cool and stern looking anime-style woman in the artwork. Or maybe its because Rev essentially makes your creatures into Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer.
This four-mana 3/3 human rogue gives one creature deathtouch when you attack. Its second ability triggers when one or more creatures deal combat damage. You get a Treasure token for each player dealt combat damage and you get to exile the top card of their library and cast it for as long as its exiled. It does Ragavan better as you don't have to cast that spell during that turn and also because the ability triggers for each player dealt damage. Like most of the legendary creatures in this list, Rev is good in the 99 and as the general of a commander deck.
To be honest, there are lots of cards that could have made it on this list. That goest to show you how this Jumpstart set is awesome for Commander players. So, what are you waiting for? Grab a box of Foundations Jumpstart and get to cracking some packs!
