Know Thyself: The Path to the Oracle

Reddit

Wake up, reader. The blood mages have you.

We represent a group dedicated to preserving the peace on Arcavios and within the majestic school of Strixhaven. It has been centuries since the end of the Blood Age at the hands of the dragon founders of the great school. Despite that, there are those who would seek to disrupt this peaceful way of life and uproot it for their own cause. They're all around us, attempting to infiltrate our ranks.

Were you listening to me, or were you looking at the massive blood avatar in red?

This is your enemy, and will be among your final challenges within the walls of Strixhaven. But for now, we must take a trip to the Oracle. She knows all. The wisest and most experienced mage in all of Arcavios, she is the one who passes her information and wisdom onto the younger generation. It is with this information that we can defeat the growing ranks of the Oriq and stop their efforts to destroy Strixhaven once and for all.

Jadzi, Oracle of Arcavios // Journey to the Oracle

Your journey begins here, dear reader. When you reach your goal, the Oracle Jadzi will know exactly what to say. What you find will be for you and you alone.

Jadzi, the Oracle | Commander | Kendra Smith

A little-known secret is that I love Simic decks. They're just so much fun. The problem, though, is that they all feel a little too same-y. Lots of big value engines, mana ramp, and big dumb payoffs. It's the kind of thing where it can be a ton of fun, but there's also such thing as having too much of a good thing. Every so often, though, it's nice to indulge a little, and that's how building and playing with Jadzi feels.

We're here to do three things: get as many lands onto the battlefield as possible, draw tons of cards, and drop monstrous powerhouse cards to close out the game. As it happens, Jadzi helps us plenty in many of these things. She costs eight mana - by no means a low number - but this is added by her card's back side, Journey to the Oracle. For four mana you can dump as many lands as you want from your hand, which should be a lot with all the card draw you'll have going on in your deck. If things go according to plan, then as the spell finishes resolving, you should hopefully have eight lands, thereby allowing you to put the spell - and thus Jadzi - into your hand, avoiding the Commander tax!

With this mana we can cast not only Jadzi, herself, but the vast majority of powerhouse spells at our disposal. Avenger of Zendikar, Tidespout Tyrant, Shark Typhoon, Sandwurm Convergence, our lord and savior Karn Liberated - all easily possible with this plethora of mana. And still Jadzi offers plenty of ways to go through the deck quickly too.

It's really hard to overstate just how good buyback can be in this kind of deck. When our Commander has Magecraft - and one as powerful as hers at that - being able to cast as many spells as possible is a huge boon. That's where buyback comes in. In a pinch, we can certainly cast cards like Whispers of the Muse, Forbid, and Capsize for their normal values, but where's the fun in that? The more we buy them back, the more we can cast them, and the more we can get those sweet cheap spells off of our favorite Quandrix Oracle.

That's not the only way to get sick value either. There aren't too many notable adventure creatures in our colors, but even as a fun-of or two, it turns out Brazen Borrower and Beanstalk Giant really are good enough. You can get some extra Magecraft value off of them and then play them as powerhouse creatures shortly after. There're tons of great ways to make sure your Magecraft triggers hit hard and powerful as well. Brainstorm, Ponder, and Preordain all help here, but none is quite as good as the classic Sensei's Divining Top. Befitting of an Oracle such as Jadzi, it lets us set up perfectly to make sure we hit exactly what we want at bargain bin prices. If all else fails, there's always storm.

Mind's Desire

If you're looking for a truly powerful Simic list to indulge in, I can't recommend this enough. Seek out the Oracle and find your destiny. Know thyself and follow the white rabbit down the rabbit hole to the bottom of your next Commander game. Take the wisest of all Arcavios for a spin and free your mind.
