It's time for week five of the Pauper Premiere League, brought to you by CoolStuffInc.com and Wizards of the Coast! Last week we saw lots of great matches between Alex Ullman, Brian Coval, Brian DeMars, and Andreas Petersen. You can watch the video replays for each of the first four weeks in the playlist below!
This week we have four new competitors to battle it out! We've got Chris VanMeter attempting to wind his way through his matches to victory on the back of Elves! After that, we have Joseph Hourani on a Bant Ephemerate combo deck. Both players are still in contention to reach the play-offs. To reach them, Chris needs to win two of his three matches, while Joseph needs to win every single one.
And while they may not be able to reach the play-offs any longer, Evan Erwin and Emma Partlow are both here to play it out and give it their all to show us just what Pauper is all about! Emma brings her signature Bogles list to the table tonight. While last time she tried Delver as a way to go a bit more outside of her comfort zone, here she plays it safe with a deck she knows and loves. Evan, on the other hand, is going all in on an Arcum's Astrolabe deck in Four-Color Control, an off-shoot of the Jeskai builds that have been popping up as of late.
Let's see what their lists have in store for us tonight!
Elves | Pauper | Chris VanMeter
- Creatures (38)
- 1 Essence Warden
- 1 Fyndhorn Elves
- 2 Nettle Sentinel
- 3 Elvish Vanguard
- 3 Wellwisher
- 4 Birchlore Rangers
- 4 Elvish Mystic
- 4 Llanowar Elves
- 4 Lys Alana Huntmaster
- 4 Priest of Titania
- 4 Quirion Ranger
- 4 Timberwatch Elf
- Sorceries (8)
- 4 Lead the Stampede
- 4 Winding Way
- Lands (14)
- 14 Forest
Why Chris chose Elves: I think that Elves is favored in most Arcum's Astrolabe matchups and had a feeling there would be more than one Astrolabe deck this split.
Bant Ephemerate | Pauper | Joseph Hourani
- Creatures (11)
- 3 Sunscape Familiar
- 4 Archaeomancer
- 4 Mulldrifter
- Instants (11)
- 2 Snap
- 2 Weather the Storm
- 3 Memory Lapse
- 4 Ephemerate
- Sorceries (15)
- 3 Ponder
- 4 Explore
- 4 Preordain
- 4 Temporal Spring
- Artifacts (2)
- 2 Arcum's Astrolabe
- Lands (21)
- 2 Evolving Wilds
- 3 Azorius Chancery
- 3 Simic Growth Chamber
- 4 Ash Barrens

- Sideboard (15)
- 2 Nature's Chant
- 2 Relic of Progenitus
- 2 Weather the Storm
- 3 Dispel
- 3 Hydroblast
- 3 Seeker of the Way
Why Joseph chose Bant Ephemerate: I first saw the deck playing in a league against Sakkra, it was being brewed on the Pauper castle Discord. I messed around with it and liked it a lot, adding some Explores and Familiars to make it faster. It's decent against aggro and control decks, but struggles against combo decks like Elves.

- 2 Crimson Acolyte
- 2 Dispel
- 2 Electrickery
- 2 Flaring Pain
- 2 Gut Shot
- 2 Natural State
- 2 Young Wolf
Why Emma chose Bogles: I've been a fan of Bogles since Modern and really enjoy playing the archetype in Pauper, Ancestral Mask is one of my favourite cards and it feels good to play something I'm well versed in!

- 3 Pyroblast
Why Evan chose Four-Color Control: When you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Last time I didn't play an Arcum's Astrolabe deck and I paid for it. I won't make the same mistake again. This deck is just one long election for the Mayor of Valuetown. With all of the sweet removal, interaction, and I get to play Mulldrifter...what's not to like?
These decks look outstanding, and it's going to be a blast seeing them in action. Here's how the matches will play out for the evening this time around:
The fun begins over at the CoolStuffInc Twitch channel at 9PM EST/6PM PST! Come hang out and join us as we watch to see who will emerge victorious among tonight's competitors.
