Hello everyone! Levi from The Thought Vessel Show here. This time, we are looking at the top ten Wizards in all of Commander. As you might expect from a company called "Wizards of the Coast," there are many incredibly strong Wizards in this game, making this list challenging to compile. Note that we are not considering these cards for a Wizards Typal deck but rather on their own. With that out of the way, let's start with our honorable mentions.
Thassa's Oracle
This card is currently the strongest and most consistent win condition in the Commander format. In some playgroups, Oracle is seen as strictly a cEDH card, and you might get looks for playing it in a casual environment. I wanted to list it here because I view it as a cEDH/high-power card and wanted to give it the respect it has earned without filling the list with cEDH staples.
Nadu, Winged Wisdom
Similar to Thassa's Oracle, or Thoracle for short, this card is incredibly powerful. It took over the most recent Modern Pro Tour and is beginning to make appearances in cEDH. Though unlikely, this card could be banned in Commander due to how long it takes to resolve turns, so I didn't want to officially list it in the top ten as a precaution. That said, this card is crazy fun to pilot.
Now, onto our Top Ten Wizards in all of Commander!
10. Aether Channeler
This might be one of my favorite pet cards in all of Magic. Making a 1/1 flying token, drawing a card, or bouncing a nonland permanent by itself is not particularly powerful, but the versatility to do any of the three upon entry makes this card great. Bonus points if the deck can loop this effect through blinking, copy, or cloning effects.
9. Volo, Guide to Monsters
Volo as a commander can be incredibly strong, making copies of any creature you cast that doesn't share a creature type with your board. As long as you can diversify your creature types, it has incredible value. Even in a Temur or Sultai creature pile, this card can absolutely put in the work.
8. Rionya, Fire Dancer
Combo potential and a high floor as a copy-making powerful creature every turn, Rionya is incredibly strong. Seeing cEDH play in Winota lists with cards like Combat Celebrant, this card is a "remove on sight" because if you can't, it might be too late.
7. Glen Elendra Archmage
This has to be one of the best cards you can possibly run in a blink deck. On its own, it is a double counterspell that can be incredibly difficult to disrupt when it hits the board. But with friends like Brago, King Eternal, and Yorion, Sky Nomad, before you know it, this card is countering everything.
6. Sen Triplets
If Grand Arbiter Augustin IV is the king of salt, then Sen Triplets has to be the runner-up. Boasting the ability to not only stop a player from casting anything on their turn but also being able to cast spells from their hand. Logically speaking, this card is consistently creating card advantage for you and card disadvantage for your opponents at the same time. On top of that, if you pick different players each turn, you will have access to more information than the rest of the table by a wide margin. Just be prepared for a three on one fight.
5. Azami, Lady of Scrolls
In short, Azami turns every single wizard you will ever play into a card advantage machine. The longer Azami is out, the more out of hand the player using Azami will get. A commander deck with Azami as the commander is probably one of the more frustrating strategies to go up against. You'll be in for a game of removal/bounce effects to counter anything that you try to do to stop it while Azami digs through the deck for a combo piece like Mind Over Matter to end the game. This card is very strong.
4. Drannith Magistrate
We have another "saltiest card in Commander" appearance with Drannith Magistrate, or as I have given him the nickname, "lightning rod," because he always draws out removal. On the surface, it looks like a very solid commander card hating on graveyard strategies until you realize it locks out your opponents from casting their own commanders. Magistrate has earned his salt.
3. Derevi, Empyrial Tactician
Over a decade old at this point from its release in 2013, Derevi is an untapping machine and also one of the few commanders that don't care about commander tax in any capacity. From building around flyers to birthing pod strategies, this legendary creature can do it all. Derevi has even seen cEDH play as a commander abusing The One Ring and in the 99 of decks like Najeela, The Blade-Blossom, and Sisay, Weatherlight Captain. This might be one of the few cards in Magic that might be immune to power creep.
2. Thrasios, Triton Hero
This card used to be one half of the most devastating cEDH deck the community had. Over the years, the meta has changed, new cards have been printed, and Tymna the Weaver, has elected to partner up with Kraum, Ludavic's Opus for a deck called Blue Farm. Despite not being at the top of the game, the ability to draw and potentially ramp at the same time is a very scary effect to go up against. To make matters worse, the activation of this effect can be done with generic mana only, so any infinite mana production at all leads to you drawing the entire deck. All of this production on a two-total-mana commander that also has the partner keyword... wild.
1. Jodah, the Unifier
As strong as Thrasios is, Jodah, the Unifier, might be the most "kill on sight" commander in all of Magic: The Gathering. Effectively, the designers of this card took the anthem effect of Sliver Legion and the cascading effect of The First Sliver and made it care about legendary spells instead. If you have ever played against this deck, you know that it takes about one to two turns of Jodah sticking around and casting legends before presenting lethal damage. This is THE "kill on sight" commander in casual play, and for that reason, Jodah is our top wizard in Commander.
And there you have it! These are the Top Ten Wizards in all of Commander. I hope you get the opportunity to try some of these cards out because they are amazing. Until next time!
