Hello, everyone! I'm Levi from The Thought Vessel Show, and this week we're looking at the top Zombies in all of Commander. Normally, I like to do these lists by evaluating the top creatures overall, but for this list, I'm focusing specifically on Zombies for a typal build, adding bonus points for Zombie synergies. Let's jump right in with the Honorable Mentions.
Honorable Mentions
Honorable Mention) Liliana's Reaver
I'm never going to stop hyping this card. Four mana for a 4/3 deathtoucher is a bit below average, but the ability to force discards and create Zombie tokens when it connects with an opponent is an amazing card advantage swing. The quicker you can remove resources in a combat-focused deck, the better.
Honorable Mention) Noxious Ghoul
A bit of a mini board wipe, I view Noxious Ghoul as a less powerful version of Toxril. If your build can produce 3-4 Zombie creatures or tokens, it can make it very difficult for your opponents to keep creatures on the board, opening up attacks for your undead army. The only downside is that this card usually shines when everything is already going well, making it a bit of a "win more" card, but I still think it's great.
10) Diregraf Colossus
I look for cards that are strong in multiple phases of the game, and Diregraf Colossus is a prime example. In the early game, casting it and getting a 2/2 Zombie every time you cast a Zombie spell offers immense value. In the late game, for three mana, you can cast a creature that gains a +1/+1 counter for each creature in your graveyard, which in a Zombie deck is usually a lot, on top of also getting the 2/2 Zombie for each creature you cast.
9) Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver
Wilhelt offers card draw, a sacrifice outlet, and a draw engine all in one card. It's a slam dunk.
8) Zombie Master
This lord provides evasion and regeneration to all your Zombies. Just be careful, if you are playing against Zombies, they will get that effect too.
7) Balthor the Defiled
This is a forgotten gem that can work wonders in either the command zone or the 99 of a deck. The only catch is that you need to add some support for this effect. Balthor's reanimation of all black and red creatures also brings back your opponent's creatures, so if you're playing against a Goblin or Dragon deck, it may not be ideal. But, with cards like Bojuka Bog or Relic of Progenitus, you can filter out graveyards to turn Balthor into a net positive.
6) God-Eternal Oketra
Similar to Balthor, this card is often overlooked. In a deck that loves building a horde of tokens to either sacrifice or pump up with anthems, Oketra is a phenomenal addition if you are running white. Each creature spell you cast results in a 4/4 Zombie with Vigilance. An army of 4/4 Zombies can be a lot to handle and they build up quite the wall for blocks too. Not bad for a five-mana creature that also is a 3/6 double striker in her own right.
5) Mikaeus, the Unhallowed
No Zombie list is complete without Mikaeus. For those unfamiliar, this card pairs nicely with a creature called Triskelion for an infinite combo that involves dealing damage to your opponents and Triskelion until you win. Even without the combo, having a lord that provides undying to your creatures is very helpful. In Commander, there are also many Humans, so the No Mercy effect he has will definitely catch some people off guard.
4) Lord of the Undead
One of the original lords in Magic, Lord of the Undead provides both a buff to your Zombies and graveyard recursion, which is essential in a good Zombie deck. This one is a bit of a no-brainer.
3) Warren Soultrader
This is another card from Modern Horizons 3 that has made a splash in the Commander format, especially in aristocrats and Zombie decks. This card provides both an essential sacrifice outlet and a treasure token producer, which, when used in bulk, can tip the scales of the game in your favor. It can be hard to stop value engines like these, especially when paired with our next card.
2) Gravecrawler
This card can be cast from your graveyard as long as you control another Zombie, allowing you to use sac outlets repeatedly for value. Additionally, with a card like Phyrexian Altar, you can recast Gravecrawler infinitely, which could win you the game with any type of payoff for that effect.
1) Gray Merchant of Asphodel
Everybody loves Gary. This card can be a phenomenal win condition or even just reset your life total to a higher level to keep you alive longer in the late game. This card can become absolutely backbreaking if you have a way to loop this effect repeatedly, which is why Gary is our top Zombie in all of Commander.
This list only scratches the surface of the powerful Zombie cards available. The key is to find a commander you connect with and build a deck that maximizes the strengths of your chosen Zombies. With these cards in your arsenal, your opponents will be facing an unstoppable undead horde in no time. Prepare to dominate the battlefield and send your opponents to an early grave. Until next time, happy gaming!
