Building Around Hare Apparent (and Delney) in Commander

Hello, everyone! I'm Levi from The Thought Vessel, and today, we're diving into a deck inspired by one of the new cards from Foundations: Hare Apparent. Before we explore the commander, strategy, and some alternate commanders I considered, let's take a closer look at Hare Apparent.

Hare Apparent

The key feature of Hare Apparent is that you can include as many copies of it as you want in your deck, and it creates Rabbit tokens through enter-the-battlefield effects. This lends itself perfectly to a token/go-wide strategy with some enter-the-battlefield synergies. With that in mind, here are some commanders I considered before deciding to try something different:

Brago, King Eternal -- One of my all-time favorite commanders, Brago immediately came to mind for this deck, as he enables strong enter-the-battlefield synergies. Every combat phase lets you blink all your Hare Apparents, generating even more Rabbits. Plus, the Blue splash opens up access to powerful cards like Distant Melody and Raise the Palisade.

Arabella, Abandoned Doll -- For speed, damage, and efficiency, Arabella is fantastic. Her attack trigger can quickly become lethal, and her red color identity gives access to cards like Impact Tremors for a devastating amount of damage.

Baylen, the Haymaker -- This commander brings interesting versatility, allowing token use for more than just combat. With Baylen, excess tokens can be turned into mana, card draw, or buffs, making this deck incredibly flexible. Plus, the Naya colors support everything from Impact Tremors to a powerful finisher like Jetmir, Nexus of Revels (aka, "The Great Catsby").

With these exciting options, I ultimately chose to go in a different direction: Delney, Streetwise Lookout. This mono-White commander is designed to use small creatures to build an army, then buff all the Rabbits at once. If you prefer any of the other commanders I mentioned, all the cards in this list are flexible enough to work in those decks. But now, you're probably wondering, "Why Delney?"

Delney, Streetwise Lookout

Delney offers two main advantages from the command zone. First, most of your creatures will be unblockable unless opponents want to trade off, giving you crucial evasion with your small creatures. Second, since the Hare Apparent creatures are 2/2s, their enter-the-battlefield effect will double. For instance, if you have two Hare Apparents in play and bring in a third, you'll create a total of six Rabbit tokens for just two mana. Additionally, being mono-White simplifies mana fixing, making it easier to cast all your Rabbits. Now, let's break down the deck!

Since we're running thirty Hare Apparents, each category includes fewer cards than usual. The deck has 10 sources of ramp, 11 for card advantage, 5 spot removal spells, 5 board wipes, 4 board protection spells, and 5 finishers. Let's take a look at some highlights from each section:

Ramp

Three Tree City

  1. Three Tree City -- In a go-wide deck, it's hard to beat Three Tree City. When you have 10-20 Rabbits in play, the mana this deck can generate becomes practically limitless.
  2. Throne of Eldraine -- One of the best benefits of running a mono-color deck is this card. A five-mana artifact that taps for four mana is fantastic, and it even provides card draw if needed.

Card Advantage

  1. Skullclamp -- The Command Zone's #1 equipment draft pick, this card is excellent when you have a bunch of 1/1 creatures. You can cash them in for two extra cards, a great rate that helps you cycle into more Hare Apparents.
  2. Rumor Gatherer -- This will likely draw a card each turn, and those frequent Scry 1 effects can feel like a tutor over time.

Spot Removal

  1. Parting Gust -- This versatile card can exile an opposing creature or offensively blink one of your Hare Apparents to generate more Rabbits.
  2. Generous Gift -- With limited removal, we need versatile options like Generous Gift. The 3/3 Elephant token it creates can't block our creatures, so it's almost like a Vindicate in this deck.

Board Wipes

  1. Fell the Mighty -- Since we generally don't have creatures over 2 power, Fell the Mighty can clear everything 3/3 or above. With five board wipes in this deck, we're aiming to keep the board free of big threats as often as possible.

Board Protection

  1. Lae'zel's Acrobatics -- Like Eerie Interlude, this card works both offensively and defensively. Blinking your entire board then re-entering to generate more tokens can set up a lethal board state, especially if you cast it on the end step before your turn.
  2. Teferi's Protection -- This staple is invaluable. It allows you to fog combat or protect your board, which is especially helpful given our lack of answers for fliers or trampling creatures.

Finishers

  1. Coat of Arms -- While I don't always include this card in tribal decks, here it works perfectly. You'll likely outscale everyone else at the table, with your Rabbits getting a massive boost like +20/+20.
  2. Mirror Entity -- Mirror Entity is a sneaky win condition. As you attack with 1/1s and 2/2s, opponents may struggle to block effectively. Right before damage, you can use all your mana to pump your creatures, taking out players before they realize what hit them.
