Top 5 Angels for Commander

Reddit

Angels as a Creature type have been around for a long time - all the way back to Alpha, with Serra Angel, a 4/4 with flying and vigilance. They've come a long way since then and are the flagship Creature type for the Magic color White. Let's take a look at the best Angels for your Commander deck!

Two quick notes: all choices assume the card fits in your Commander's color identity. Also, these cards should be good in most builds, not just dedicated Kindred builds. That's another article!

Honorable Mention #1

Sigarda, Font of Blessings
Shalai, Voice of Plenty

Both of these cards will be great in any Green-White Creature-based deck, with a slight nod to Shalai assuming you're not Angels or Humans Kindred. Both complicate interaction and slow down your opponents, and Shalai buffs your team. Blanking a lot of point removal or making it so killing one of your Creatures costs two removal spells, is a fantastic effect. I also like the idea of Shalai in a Superfriends build.

Honorable Mention #2

Battle Angels of Tyr

Battle Angels of Tyr are pretty much always good. You get great stats for the price, plus Myriad means you'll be attacking everyone every turn. You're likely to eek out some benefits, too, since someone meets each criterion. The fact it's two in the casting cost means it's a little tougher to run in non-mono-White decks, but it's still worth considering. And in mono-White? Absolutely. This card would slay in an Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite deck.

Number 5

Aurelia, the Law Above

Aurelia gives us excellent stats and keywords for the price, attacking the turn she comes in, in the air, and still providing a blocker. Even better, she benefits us each time someone attacks with three or more Creatures, a thing which happens a lot in Commander. If someone attacks with five, even better, but regular card advantage stapled to a big flying body is pretty much always good. If I played a lot of the Emperor format, I'd build a deck around this Commander to play every time I'm the attacking player.

Number 4

Firemane Commando

This is like Aurelia, but in a number of ways better. The color requirements are easier, slotting into any deck with White. Assuming you can rustle up one more Creature to attack with (another flier, perhaps? Or something with menace? Your Commander? Or just a random token you don't care gets eaten?) you can draw an extra card each turn. But even better, smart players will point their attackers at other players because they'll want the extra card, giving you more time to set up your board or move you toward a combo. I love this card in pretty much any {W} or {W}-based token deck, and it would be an excellent power upgrade to my super-cheap Ellyn Harbreeze, Busybody deck.

Number 3

Emeria Shepherd

Emeria Shepherd is expensive, but the ability is fantastic. The ability to buyback our fallen permanents is very strong, and keep in mind it's not just Creatures. We can get back an Oblivion Ring, a Nevinyrral's Disk, or an Akroma's Memorial. If we're mono-White, we're very likely to put whatever we get back on the 'field, and if we time things carefully we can leverage that ability even if we're not in mono-color. A 4/4 flier is never a bad thing to have around, either, but the fact it rewards us just for playing Lands - a thing we're nearly guaranteed to do quite a bit - is what puts this so high up the list.

Number 2

Archangel of Thune

There's a reason this card costs as much as it does. Assuming your deck has Creatures in it, it will likely benefit from having this card. If you have more than just the Archangel to gain life, even better, because the +1/+1 counters can get out of hand really quickly. It combos beautifully with Spike Feeder, going infinite, and if you give Walking Ballista lifelink somehow, it goes infinite there too. Personally, I like this in a Bant build with Fathom Mage and Horizon Chimera, drawing the entire deck if you want on your draw step. Even without combos, though, it's a strong card in any deck looking to punch through with multiple Creatures.

Number 1

Avacyn, Angel of Hope

Making your entire board Indestructible is too powerful to ignore. Avacyn is like a Darksteel Forge with an 8/8 Flying Vigilant body, except instead of artifacts it's everything you control. Yes, she costs eight mana, and yes, three of them are White, but it's a small price to pay for what should be a game-winning spell. We can still end up being hosed by a well-placed Swords or an unlucky All is Dust, but the risk is worth it. If you want a haymaker play for your deck, Avacyn will probably get you there.

I hope this helps you find some new cards for your brews!
