Hello everyone. We're just a few weeks away from the release of our next set, but I'm still finding new and exciting decks to play in Standard. This week I have four decks that I can't wait to build. Let's get started.
Jeskai Angels
We'll begin with a deck that features a lot of evasive and powerful creatures. Let's take a look at the deck.
Jeskai Angels | MKM Standard | HelloGoodGame, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (22)
- 2 Aurelia, the Law Above
- 2 Inspiring Overseer
- 3 Errant and Giada
- 3 Skrelv, Defector Mite
- 4 Aurelia's Vindicator
- 4 Giada, Font of Hope
- 4 Resplendent Angel
- Instants (5)
- 2 Get Lost
- 3 No More Lies
- Sorceries (5)
- 2 Angelfire Ignition
- 3 Strangle
- Enchantments (2)
- 2 Case of the Crimson Pulse
- Artifacts (2)
- 2 The Irencrag
Giada, Font of Hope allows this deck to get big, and very quickly. While Giada is on the battlefield, each new Angel that you bring into play will get a +1/+1 counter on it for each Angel you already control. That will allow your Angels to become bigger than your opponent's threats, making them excellent defenders. And, since all of your Angels also have flying, they become massive threats. Oh, and Giada also helps accelerate your mana when casting Angels.
Resplendent Angel pairs nicely with Giada. While Resplendent Angel is on the battlefield, you'll get to create a 4/4 Angel creature token with flying and vigilance each turn that you gain 5 or more life. That can become easy to do if you happen to have Aurelia's Vindicator in play, as the +1/+1 counters Giada provides will allow it to attack with more than 5 power. Since it also has lifelink, you'll be able to produce a new Angel creature token each turn until you finally overwhelm your opponent's defenses.
Bant +1/+1 Counters
Another deck that is capable of producing a ton of +1/+1 counters is up next. Let's check it out.
Bant +1/+1 Counters | MKM Standard | SwayzeMTG, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (29)
- 2 Torens, Fist of the Angels
- 3 Sovereign Okinec Ahau
- 4 Botanical Brawler
- 4 Gala Greeters
- 4 Hopeful Initiate
- 4 Ingenious Prodigy
- 4 Siege Veteran
- 4 Thrummingbird
- Planeswalkers (3)
- 3 The Wandering Emperor
- Instants (4)
- 4 Repulsive Mutation
Whenever Sovereign Okinec Ahau attacks, each creature you control that has power that is more than their base power will gain some amount of +1/+1 counters, making each of those creatures even more powerful. Since this effect happens when Sovereign Okinec Ahau attacks, your opponent might have difficulty blocking any creatures that will be gaining counters effectively.
In order to ensure that your team has an abundant supply of +1/+1 counters, you can rely on a couple of cards for help with this. First is Standard's premier planeswalker, The Wandering Emperor. Her +1 loyalty ability places a +1/+1 counter on any creature in play. There's also Siege Veteran, who places a +1/+1 counter on a creature you control at the beginning of combat on your turn. Both of these cards help your team gain more and more +1/+1 counters as the game goes on.
Jeskai Superfriends
Next, I have a deck for you that utilizes the power of planeswalkers to win games. Let's take a look at the deck.
Jeskai Superfriends | MKM Standard | LegenVD, aetherhub.com user
- Planeswalkers (14)
- 2 Chandra, Hope's Beacon
- 2 Jace, the Perfected Mind
- 2 Quintorius Kand
- 2 Teferi, Temporal Pilgrim
- 2 Teferi, Who Slows the Sunset
- 2 The Eternal Wanderer
- 2 The Wandering Emperor
- Instants (9)
- 1 Big Score
- 2 Experimental Augury
- 2 Get Lost
- 4 Lightning Helix
- Sorceries (1)
- 1 Ill-Timed Explosion
- Enchantments (7)
- 3 Temporary Lockdown
- 4 Urza Assembles the Titans
- Artifacts (5)
- 1 Staff of Compleation
- 2 The Celestus
- 2 The Irencrag
While this deck technically has no creatures, it has numerous ways of creating creature tokens that will help you finish off your opponent. The Wandering Emperor, Quintorius Kand, Teferi, Temporal Pilgrim, and The Eternal Wanderer all have abilities that you can use to create creature tokens. There should be no reason this deck has any trouble closing out games.
In addition to all of the planeswalkers in this deck, there are a lot of spells that act as creature removal. Lightning Helix and Get Lost are both targeted removal, while Ill-Timed Explosion and Temporary Lockdown are able to take care of numerous threats. By getting your opponent's creatures out of the way, you can swing in easily with your own creature tokens, for the win.
Naya Midrange
The final deck I have for you this week likes getting additional value from its triggered abilities. Let's take a look at the deck.
Naya Midrange | MKM Standard | MtgMalone, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (17)
- 2 Etali, Primal Conqueror // Etali, Primal Sickness
- 3 Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines
- 4 Geological Appraiser
- 4 Pugnacious Hammerskull
- 4 Trumpeting Carnosaur
- Planeswalkers (5)
- 2 Ajani, Sleeper Agent
- 3 Quintorius Kand
- Sorceries (4)
- 4 Angelfire Ignition
- Enchantments (7)
- 3 Temporary Lockdown
- 4 Fight Rigging
While you have Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines on the battlefield, you'll get an additional trigger whenever an ability is triggered by a permanent entering the battlefield. That works very well with many of the creatures in this deck. Quintorius Kand, Geological Appraiser, and Trumpeting Carnosaur all let you discover twice. Etali, Primal Conqueror // Etali, Primal Sickness, in addition to being a big threat, will also trigger twice when it comes into play. These additional triggers equate to added value for you.
The easiest way to win with this deck is with the use of Angelfire Ignition. This sorcery does it all. It adds +1/+1 counters to a creature, making it a bigger threat. It then gives that creature numerous keywords, including haste and trample, to name just a couple. Plus, Angelfire Ignition has flashback, allowing you to cast it from your graveyard. With all of the free cards you'll get from discovering multiple times, plus the keyword soup that Angelfire Ignition provides, you'll find games ending very quickly.
Wrapping Up
As we continue the march towards the release of Outlaws of Thunder Junction, it's great to see that there are so many fun and exciting decks left to discover in Standard. While I was originally skeptical that having a bigger card pool in Standard would be a good thing, I'm happy to see that it seems to have helped keep the creative fountain flowing.
What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
