Standard Decks to Try Before Outlaws of Thunder Junction Releases!

Reddit

Hello everyone. As the spoiler season for Outlaws of Thunder Junction wraps up, I'm here to remind you that there are still a few weeks until these cards are officially released. With that in mind, I have some new decks that you can currently build to play at your local game store or at home against your friends. Let's get started.

Temur Rage

The first deck I have for you can deal a massive amount of damage directly to your opponent. Let's take a look at the deck.

Worldsoul's Rage
Worldsoul's Rage offers you both the means of dealing a ton of damage to a single target, plus a way to ramp up the number of lands you have on the battlefield. While you'll most often want to direct the damage this sorcery does directly at your opponent's life total, remember that it can be used as targeted removal for a creature or planeswalker your opponent has in play.

To get the best possible result from Worldsoul's Rage, you'll want to have at least one copy of Virtue of Strength in play. This enchantment is necessary to have in play in order to triple the amount of mana your basic lands will produce. Since all of the lands in this deck that stay in play are basic lands, you'll always get the maximum effect from Virtue of Strength.

Mardu Rats

Next, I have a deck for you that focuses on the Rat creature type. Let's take a look at the deck.

Lord Skitter, Sewer King
Rats are the name of the game in this deck. Numerous creatures and spells will create 1/1 Rat creature tokens, including Twisted Sewer-Witch, Redcap Gutter-Dweller, and Harried Spearguard. You can create a variable number of Rat tokens when you cast Song of Totentanz. There's also Lord Skitter, Sewer King and Tangled Colony, helping to create even more Rat tokens.

You can benefit from these Rats in numerous ways. By having Warleader's Call in play, whenever a new creature enters the battlefield under your control, you'll deal a point of damage to your opponent. It also provides a +1/+1 bonus to all of your creatures. Case of the Gateway Express and Imodane's Recruiter also provide a power boost for all of your creatures, allowing you to attack for quite a bit of damage. To make it even harder for your opponent, you can cast Lord Skitter's Butcher to give your creatures menace for the turn.

Grixis Dragons

The next deck I have for you features one of Magic's most popular creature types, Dragons. Let's check it out.

Incinerator of the Guilty
Bonehoard Dracosaur
Shivan Devastator

If you, like me, are a big fan of beefy Dragons, then you'll want to check out this deck. It features three of Standard's best Dragons. Incinerator of the Guilty acts as both a great source of damage and removal for this deck. Bonehoard Dracosaur offers you a way of either having additional cards that you're able to cast each turn, or as a source of creature token creation. Finally, Shivan Devastator has a variable cost, making it a great dragon to play at any stage of the game.

In order to cast these big, beefy Dragons, this deck has a couple of creatures that can help produce extra mana. Rivaz of the Claw creates 2 mana that can only be used to cast Dragon creature spells. It also allows you to cast Dragons from your graveyard. Then, you have Sarkhan, Soul Aflame. Sarkhan gives a discount to all Dragon spells you cast, and he can become a copy of any Dragon you play on the turn it enters the battlefield.

Esper Ripper Control

The final deck I have for you this week is a control deck featuring one of the best cards from Murders at Markov Manor, Vein Ripper. Let's take a look at the deck.

Vein Ripper
Vein Ripper is the only creature in this deck, and it is a wonderful finisher. While it has a mana value of five, you'll likely have plenty of time to get this Vampire Assassin into play. In the early stages of the game, you'll be able to gain small increments of life by casting such spells as Faithful Mending, Union of the Third Path, and The Celestus. There are also numerous spells that offer targeted removal or are board wipes, so your opponent might have trouble keeping their creatures in play.

Once you're able to cast Vein Ripper, you're likely to dominate things rather quickly. By having 6/5 stats, you'll be able to attack your opponent for a hefty chunk of their life total. Alternatively, you can hold back, acting as a blocker, destroying nearly anything your opponent throws at you. Did I mention Vein Ripper also has flying, making it difficult to block? Plus, it has a ward ability, where targeted removal causes your opponent to sacrifice a creature for the spell to resolve. Vein Ripper simply does everything this deck could want.

Wrapping Up

As we get closer and closer to the release of Outlaws of Thunder Junction, I'm in awe at the number of new decks that continue to pop up. Be sure to come back next week as I'll be bringing you four new decks to try out.

What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
