Hello everyone. I'm back again this week with some new decks you can use at your local Friday Night Magic event, or just for fun against your friends while sitting around your kitchen table. Let's get started.
Perfect Boros Burn
We'll begin this week with a deck in my favorite two colors, Red and White. It's a super fun deck featuring a lot of burn spells. Let's take a look at the deck.
Perfect Boros Burn | OTJ Standard | LegenVD, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (12)
- 4 Kessig Flamebreather
- 4 Monastery Swiftspear
- 4 Taii Wakeen, Perfect Shot
- Instants (10)
- 2 Lightning Strike
- 4 Lightning Helix
- 4 Play with Fire
- Sorceries (6)
- 2 Tectonic Hazard
- 4 End the Festivities
- Enchantments (10)
- 2 Virtue of Courage
- 4 Kumano Faces Kakkazan // Etching of Kumano
- 4 Mechanized Warfare
Taii Wakeen, Perfect Shot provides a very appreciated boost to a deck like this. With her static ability, you'll be able to draw a card whenever you're able to deal noncombat damage to a creature that equals that creature's toughness. She also has an activated ability you can use that allows you to add on a variable amount of additional damage to a source of noncombat damage, making it easier to deal the exact amount of damage to be equal to a creature's toughness.
Since you'll be casting a lot of spells that will deal damage, you'll likely want to keep Taii Wakeen, Perfect Shot out of combat to ensure that she won't die and leave you without this source of extra cards. Luckily, both Kessig Flamebreather and Monastery Swiftspear are here to help you get damage on your opponent. Both of these creatures have abilities that trigger whenever a noncreature spell is cast, resulting in a ton of damage being dealt to your opponent's life total.
Orzhov Control
Next, I have a control deck for you that features one of the best Angels currently in Standard. Let's take a look at the deck.
Orzhov Control | OTJ Standard | SlothMtg, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (6)
- 2 Boon-Bringer Valkyrie
- 4 Sheoldred, the Apocalypse
- Planeswalkers (6)
- 1 Kaya, Intangible Slayer
- 2 Sorin the Mirthless
- 3 The Wandering Emperor
- Instants (12)
- 1 Bitter Triumph
- 1 Long Goodbye
- 2 Final Showdown
- 4 Go for the Throat
- 4 March of Otherworldly Light
- Sorceries (4)
- 4 Insatiable Avarice
- Enchantments (5)
- 1 Virtue of Persistence
- 4 Temporary Lockdown
- Artifacts (1)
- 1 The Celestus
Boon-Bringer Valkyrie is quite a finisher for this deck. It has flying, making it difficult to block. It also has first strike, making it a terrific blocker. However, the pièce de résistance is the lifelink that it has. Whether it's a 4/4 or a 5/5 (due to having backup 1), the amount of life that you'll be able to gain with this Angel Warrior is quite impressive.
You'll also be able to gain additional life while you have Sheoldred, the Apocalypse on the battlefield. Sheoldred is another creature that's perfect for blocking, but also makes a very effective attacker. Since she has deathtouch, your opponent will likely have to throw multiple creatures in front of Sheoldred to effectively block and destroy her. Otherwise, she's likely to bear the brunt of targeted removal your opponent has, leaving clear skies for Boon-Bringer Valkyrie.
Azorius Flash
The next deck I have for you likes casting spells on the opponent's turn. Let's check it out.
Azorius Flash | OTJ Standard | SwayzeMTG, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (17)
- 1 Horned Loch-Whale
- 2 Hullbreaker Horror
- 3 Kutzil's Flanker
- 3 Wrangler of the Damned
- 4 Academy Loremaster
- 4 Aven Interrupter
- Planeswalkers (3)
- 3 The Wandering Emperor
- Instants (10)
- 3 Get Lost
- 3 Memory Deluge
- 4 No More Lies
- Enchantments (4)
- 4 High Noon
By taking advantage of having numerous creatures with the flash keyword, you can leave your mana open on your turn and keep it free for countering your opponent's spells. If they don't cast anything too threatening, you can always flash in a creature. This is especially important to remember while you have Wrangler of the Damned in play. If you don't cast any spells during your turn, you'll get to create a 2/2 Spirit creature token with flying at the beginning of your end step.
If it wasn't already hard enough for your opponent to cast spells during their turn, not knowing whether you'll be able to counter them or not, you can make it even more difficult for them. If you get High Noon into play, each player will only be able to cast one spell each turn. Even though this will affect you as well as your opponent, you'll be more prepared for it, giving you an advantage.
Selesnya Power 4+
The final deck I have for you can draw a lot of cards and put a lot of big bodies on the battlefield. Let's check it out.
Selesnya Power 4+ | OTJ Standard | HelloGoodGame, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (26)
- 2 Trostani, Three Whispers
- 2 Wylie Duke, Atiin Hero
- 3 Skrelv, Defector Mite
- 3 Vaultborn Tyrant
- 4 Dust Animus
- 4 Outcaster Trailblazer
- 4 Seraphic Steed
- 4 Topiary Stomper
- Instants (4)
- 1 Smuggler's Surprise
- 3 Get Lost
- Sorceries (3)
- 3 Hard-Hitting Question
- Battles (3)
- 3 Invasion of Zendikar // Awakened Skyclave
- Lands (24)
- 4 Plains
- 5 Forest
- 1 Boseiju, Who Endures
- 1 Eiganjo, Seat of the Empire
- 1 Restless Prairie
- 4 Brushland
- 4 Overgrown Farmland
- 4 Razorverge Thicket
- Sideboard (2)
- 1 Nissa, Ascended Animist
- 1 Railway Brawler
This deck is full of big creatures that have power 4 or more when they enter the battlefield. These play nicely alongside Outcaster Trailblazer. While this Human Druid is on the battlefield, whenever another creature with power 4 or greater enters the battlefield under your control, you get to draw a card. With luck, you'll draw another creature that has the power required to keep triggering this ability.
Another means of drawing additional cards is by playing Wylie Duke, Atiin Hero. Whenever he becomes tapped, you'll gain 1 life and draw a card. The best way to tap Wylie Duke without putting him into harm's way during combat is to tap him to saddle Seraphic Steed. This Unicorn Mount has both first strike and lifelink, so you'll be able to gain even more life when it attacks. As long as Seraphic Steed is saddled, you'll also create a 3/3 Angel creature token with flying when it attacks, giving you even more of an advantage for your next attack.
Wrapping Up
Of these four decks, I'm not sure which is my favorite. I love a good burn deck, but the thought of gaining a lot of life is also enticing. And who doesn't love playing cards on their opponent's turn? I know I enjoy it. I'm looking forward to trying all of these decks out for myself to see which one I like the best.
What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
