Hello everyone. I'm in the middle of a series of articles where I'm looking at decks featuring a specific color, including decks where that featured color is paired with another color. I've previously looked at decks featuring Black, Red, and Green mana, so this week I'll be looking at decks featuring White mana. Let's get started.
Mono-White Humans
As usual, we'll start with a mono-colored deck. This time, the Mono-White deck features a Human theme. Let's take a look at the deck.
Mono-White Humans | OTJ Standard | arstall, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (36)
- 2 Sanguine Evangelist
- 2 Skrelv, Defector Mite
- 2 Warden of the Inner Sky
- 3 Knight-Errant of Eos
- 3 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
- 4 Adeline, Resplendent Cathar
- 4 Brutal Cathar // Moonrage Brute
- 4 Coppercoat Vanguard
- 4 Intrepid Adversary
- 4 Lunarch Veteran // Luminous Phantom
- 4 Recruitment Officer
- Enchantments (2)
- 2 Ossification
- Lands (22)
- 16 Plains
- 1 Eiganjo, Seat of the Empire
- 2 Mishra's Foundry
- 3 Cavern of Souls
With a couple of exceptions, this deck features creatures that are all Humans. That means that you'll want to choose Human as your creature type of choice when you play Cavern of Souls. That will ensure that all of your Humans enter the battlefield, as they will not be able to be countered. Plus, once you have at least one copy of Coppercoat Vanguard in play, it will be more difficult for your opponent to use spot removal spells thanks to your Humans having ward 1.
This deck includes a pair of Warden of the Inner Sky. By gaining a +1/+1 counter whenever you tap three creatures you control (there are no artifacts in this deck), you can increase the potency of this Human Soldier over the course of the game. Once it has three counters on it, it will gain flying and vigilance, making it a great creature you can use to finish off your opponent.
Azorius Mindsplice Control
The next deck I have for you features an artifact that reduces the amount of mana you need when you cast your spells. Let's take a look at the deck.
Azorius Mindsplice Control | OTJ Standard | SlothMtg, aetherhub.com user
- Planeswalkers (3)
- 1 Jace, the Perfected Mind
- 2 The Wandering Emperor
- Instants (20)
- 1 Negate
- 1 Union of the Third Path
- 2 Get Lost
- 2 Soul Partition
- 3 March of Otherworldly Light
- 3 Three Steps Ahead
- 4 Memory Deluge
- 4 No More Lies
- Sorceries (5)
- 1 Farewell
- 2 Sunfall
- 2 Witness the Future
- Enchantments (2)
- 2 Temporary Lockdown
- Artifacts (4)
- 4 Mindsplice Apparatus
Mindsplice Apparatus is such a beneficial tool for a control deck to have. Every turn it's on the battlefield at the beginning of your upkeep, it will gain an oil counter. This oil helps the machine run more efficiently, reducing the cost for you to cast instant and sorcery spells by one mana for each oil counter on Mindsplice Apparatus. This reduction is in effect at all times, even on your opponent's turn, allowing you to cast a ridiculous number of spells per turn.
Once you have your opponent sufficiently under control, you can think about ending the game. There are three things in this deck that you can use for this. First are the 2/2 Samurai creature tokens that The Wandering Emperor can create. Second, you have the Incubator token created when you cast Sunfall. Finally, you have lands that you can use to either create Phyrexian Mite creature tokens (Mirrex), or become creatures in their own right, like Restless Anchorage.
Orzhov Legends
Next, let's see what we get when we mix White mana with Black mana and a few legendary creatures.
Orzhov Legends | OTJ Standard | Dominic, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (19)
- 2 Kambal, Profiteering Mayor
- 2 Skrelv, Defector Mite
- 3 Adeline, Resplendent Cathar
- 4 Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim
- 4 Lunarch Veteran // Luminous Phantom
- 4 Voice of the Blessed
- Planeswalkers (3)
- 3 The Wandering Emperor
- Instants (4)
- 4 Fateful Absence
- Sorceries (6)
- 2 Can't Stay Away
- 4 Recommission
- Enchantments (4)
- 4 Wedding Announcement // Wedding Festivity
Kambal, Profiteering Mayor punishes your opponent whenever they create a token, and rewards you for creating tokens of your own. Since you can't always know that your opponent will be able to create tokens, the best way to capitalize on this ability is by creating tokens of your own. Wedding Announcement // Wedding Festivity, The Wandering Emperor, and Adeline, Resplendent Cathar are all great token creators that will help ensure you can trigger Kambals ability which causes your opponent to lose one life and you to gain one life.
That source of life gain, in combination with the life gained from Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim and Lunarch Veteran // Luminous Phantom, will help Voice of the Blessed gain +1/+1 counters. As it gains more and more counters, not only does it become a bigger threat, but it also gains additional beneficial keywords such as flying, vigilance, and indestructible. Gain those +1/+1 counters as quickly as you can, because Voice of the Blessed is sure to be a target for your opponent's removal spells.
Boros Angels
Next, we'll add a splash of Red mana to our White to create Boros and look at an Angel kindred deck. Let's check it out.
Boros Angels | OTJ Standard | LegenVD, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (24)
- 2 Aurelia, the Law Above
- 2 Inspiring Overseer
- 4 Archangel of Tithes
- 4 Archangel of Wrath
- 4 Giada, Font of Hope
- 4 Resplendent Angel
- 4 Steel Seraph
- Instants (6)
- 2 Get Lost
- 4 Lightning Helix
- Sorceries (2)
- 2 Sunset Revelry
- Enchantments (2)
- 2 Temporary Lockdown
The heart of this deck is a White Angel-themed deck, like I've shown you in the past. Start things off with Giada, Font of Hope, and use her mana producing ability to quickly bring out bigger and bigger Angelic threats. When possible, give your Angels lifelink with the use of Steel Seraph's ability, and create new Angel creature tokens with Resplendent Angel.
Even though there's just a hint of Red mana in this deck, it can be used to help gain additional life so that you hit the five life required to trigger Resplendent Angel. Lightning Helix will deal three damage to any target, and will give you three points of life. There's also Aurelia, the Law Above, who acts as a source of potential card drawing and as a repeatable source of direct damage and lifegain similar to Lightning Helix.
Selesnya Blink
The final deck I have for you this week features the Selesnya Conclave and takes advantage of effects that happen when its creatures enter the battlefield. Let's take a look at the deck.
Selesnya Blink | OTJ Standard | Redd_Cat_MTG, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (26)
- 1 Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines
- 2 Bramble Wurm
- 2 Bristlebud Farmer
- 2 Fortune, Loyal Steed
- 2 Novice Inspector
- 2 Steel Seraph
- 3 Resplendent Angel
- 4 Boulderbranch Golem
- 4 Lunarch Veteran // Luminous Phantom
- 4 Spirited Companion
- Planeswalkers (1)
- 1 The Eternal Wanderer
- Sorceries (2)
- 2 Another Round
- Enchantments (5)
- 1 Case of the Uneaten Feast
- 2 Prayer of Binding
- 2 Touch the Spirit Realm
Most of the creatures in this deck have abilities that happen when they enter the battlefield. These range in effect from creating a Clue or Food token, to drawing a card, or even gaining some life. None of these effects are game-breaking, but they all add a small, useful effect when they happen. If you have Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines on the battlefield, you'll be able to trigger those effects twice, while your opponent won't be able to trigger their ETB (enter the battle) effects at all.
As I mentioned, these ETB effects aren't ultra powerful on their own, but what happens if you're able to trigger them repeatedly? That becomes a possibility with the help of Fortune, Loyal Steed. Suddenly, you're able to gain extra life every turn. Even better, you're able to draw extra cards. In addition to Fortune, you can also cast Another Round to get a similar effect. With the help of both of these cards, those extra ETB effects can help you win the game.
Wrapping Up
While White is usually known for its healing effects and decks featuring small, numerous creatures, these decks show that it has much more to offer. White really pairs nicely with each other color to provide you with interesting and fun decks to play.
What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
