A Spectrum of White Decks in MAT Standard

Reddit

Hello everyone. While Red decks might be the color of deck I play most frequently, White is a strong secondary color for me. I find that White pairs well with all of the other colors, giving me many decks as options to play that I will enjoy. This week I'm taking a look at four decks that each pair White with another color. Let's get started.

Azorius Planeswalkers

We'll get started by taking a look at a control deck featuring some of Standard's best planeswalkers. Let's check out the deck.

Ichormoon Gauntlet
Powerful planeswalkers are what this deck is all about. With his -2 loyalty ability, Teferi, Temporal Pilgrim is capable of creating a 2/2 Spirit creature token with vigilance that will grow in size over the course of the game. The Wandering Emperor can also create a 2/2 Samurai creature token with vigilance with her -2 loyalty ability. It's with these creatures that you'll be able to reduce your opponent's life total to zero. Alternatively, you might find yourself in a position to use the -X loyalty ability of Jace, the Perfected Mind to mill your opponent's library entirely.

Ichormoon Gauntlet helps with each of these strategies. While it is on the battlefield, planeswalkers you control have two additional abilities you can use. For 0 loyalty, you can proliferate, while paying 12 points of loyalty from one of your planeswalkers will allow you to take an extra turn. You'll proliferate way more often than you'll take an extra turn, but both abilities can come in helpful. By proliferating, you can increase the loyalty Teferi, Temporal Pilgrim has, allowing you to create Spirit tokens without depleting Teferi's loyalty. Those tokens can help you win quickly, especially if you're able to take an extra turn or two.

Orzhov Blink

Next, I have a White/Black deck for you that features some terrific 'enter the battlefield' (ETB) effects. Let's take a look at the deck.

Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines
The Eternal Wanderer

Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines and The Eternal Wanderer team up in this deck to provide a lot of value. While Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines is on the battlefield, all of your ETB effects will trigger a second time, plus your opponent's ETB effects won't trigger at all. Combine that doubling effect with the +1 loyalty ability of The Eternal Wanderer, which allows you to temporarily exile an artifact or creature, and you can perform some crazy shenanigans.

Since most of the creatures in this deck, plus a couple of artifacts, have ETB effects, you'll receive some crazy benefits. Sheoldred // The True Scriptures and Dusk Mangler both force your opponent to sacrifice a creature (in addition to discarding and losing life when Dusk Mangler enters play). Spirited Companion and The Mightstone and Weakstone both have you draw cards when they come into play. Alternatively, The Mightstone and Weakstone can also provide creature removal. Portal to Phyrexia is particularly nasty, especially if its effects are doubled, as your opponent will have to sacrifice three (or six) creatures when it enters the battlefield.

Boros Equipment

The next deck I have for you is in Boros colors and utilizes equipment to gain an advantage. Let's take a look at it.

Jor Kadeen, First Goldwarden
Jor Kadeen, First Goldwarden hasn't seen much play since being released, but they are an all-star in this deck. Jor Kadeen gets a bonus based on the number of equipped creatures you control, plus you can draw a card if their power is 4 or more. This ability pairs up nicely with equipment that creates its own creature token that it is equipped to when it enters the battlefield. Citizen's Crowbar, Hexgold Halberd, Barbed Batterfist, and Bladehold War-Whip all do this, in addition to providing some nice other abilities.

To get even more value from the equipment in this deck, this deck includes three copies of Nahiri's Resolve. While Nahiri's Resolve is on the battlefield, all of your creatures get +1/+0 and haste. More importantly, though, Nahiri's Resolve allows you to exile any number of nontoken artifacts and/or creatures you control at the beginning of your end step. They will return to the battlefield at the beginning of your next upkeep. This allows you to create all new creature tokens, plus it keeps your equipment safe from removal on your opponent's turn.

Selesnya Humans

The final color pairing I have for you this week pairs White with Green. Let's take a look at this Human typal deck.

Coppercoat Vanguard
Typal is the new vernacular to indicate that a deck is focused on a creature type. For this deck, that creature type is Humans. As with most typal decks, there will be certain cards that benefit the creature type the deck is built around. For this deck, there are two such cards. The first is Coppercoat Vanguard. While this Human Soldier is in play, your other Humans will gain a +1/+0 bonus, plus ward 1. Since there is a full playset of Coppercoat Vanguard in this deck, having multiple copies in play is certain to make things difficult for your opponent.

The second card that really helps out this Human typal deck is Katilda, Dawnhart Prime. While she is on the battlefield, she allows your Human creatures to be tapped to provide mana. You can use that mana to activate Katilda's activated ability, which will put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control. These benefits that Katilda provides are amplified if you also have Torens, Fist of the Angels, as casting creatures will create additional creature tokens, all of which will provide additional mana to use on future turns.

Wrapping Up

As you can see, White is a very versatile color to pair with in Magic. Each of these decks is unique, and plays differently from each other. I can't decide which of these I'll build first on Magic Arena, because all of them look like a blast to play.

What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
