Hello everyone. As we await the release of Bloomburrow, it's time to prepare for the upcoming Standard rotation. For the next couple of weeks, I'll be bringing you some decks you can play that are "rotation-proof". While they might not include any cards from Bloomburrow, they are decks that you can make right now that only contain cards that will remain legal in Standard. Let's get started.
Izzet Pirates
The first deck I have for you this week features Pirates, a group of scallywags that are definitely up to no good. Let's take a look at the deck.
Izzet Pirates | BLB Standard | PobrePlaninauta, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (28)
- 1 Malcolm, Alluring Scoundrel
- 2 Breeches, the Blastmaker
- 2 Gleaming Geardrake
- 2 Malcolm, the Eyes
- 3 Breeches, Eager Pillager
- 3 Captain Storm, Cosmium Raider
- 3 Kitesail Larcenist
- 4 Goblin Tomb Raider
- 4 Spyglass Siren
- 4 Staunch Crewmate
- Instants (4)
- 4 Torch the Tower
- Artifacts (6)
- 1 Lavaspur Boots
- 1 Lost Jitte
- 2 Legion Extruder
- 2 Subterranean Schooner
- Lands (22)
- 3 Island
- 4 Mountain
- 1 Restless Spire
- 1 Spirebluff Canal
- 2 Mishra's Foundry
- 3 Spirebluff Canal
- 4 Cavern of Souls
- 4 Shivan Reef
This deck features a pair of creatures that both provide you benefits when you cast your second spell each turn. Malcolm, the Eyes lets you investigate whenever you cast your second spell of the turn, netting you a Clue token and a potential extra card. Alternatively, you can sacrifice that Clue (or any other artifact) if you have Breeches, the Blastmaker in play. Breeches offers you a way of creating a copy of a spell if you win a coin flip. If you lose the flip, you'll instead be able to deal direct damage to any target.
This deck also includes a few artifacts that don't see much play in Standard. First is Legion Extruder, which deals direct damage when it enters play. You can then use it to turn your other artifacts into 3/3 Golem creature tokens. Lost Jitte offers you a trio of great options that you can use which are all situational, but definitely worth using. Finally, Lavaspur Boots can be used to provide a boost to power, as well as haste and ward 1 to the equipped creature. These are well worth the two mana needed to pay and equip them.
Gruul Dinosaurs
Next, I have a Red/Green deck for you featuring some big prehistoric threats. Let's check it out.
Gruul Dinosaurs | BLB Standard | Tommi, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (28)
- 3 Bonehoard Dracosaur
- 3 Palani's Hatcher
- 3 Rampaging Raptor
- 3 Trumpeting Carnosaur
- 4 Hulking Raptor
- 4 Intrepid Paleontologist
- 4 Ixalli's Lorekeeper
- 4 Pugnacious Hammerskull
- Sorceries (7)
- 3 Hard-Hitting Question
- 4 Triumphant Chomp
- Lands (25)
- 5 Forest
- 5 Mountain
- 3 Restless Ridgeline
- 4 Cavern of Souls
- 4 Copperline Gorge
- 4 Karplusan Forest
- Sideboard (15)
- 4 Tranquil Frillback
- 3 Torch the Tower
- 2 Lithomantic Barrage
- 3 Tectonic Hazard
- 3 Urabrask's Forge
Big dinosaurs is the name of the game with this deck. You'll likely need to use the mana-providing abilities of Intrepid Paleontologist and Ixalli's Lorekeeper to power out your heavy hitters earlier than usual. One of my favorite dinosaurs to power out is Palani's Hatcher. While Palani's Hatcher is on the battlefield, other dinosaurs you control will have haste, giving you quite an advantage. Palani's Hatcher also brings along a pair of 0/1 Dinosaur Egg creature tokens that will eventually turn into 3/3 Dinosaurs for you to utilize.
In addition to the creatures in this deck are a pair of spells that you can use to deal some direct damage to your opponent's creatures or planeswalkers. Triumphant Chomp only costs a single mana, but it's possible to deal a whopping 7 points of damage to an opposing creature with it. Similarly, Hard-Hitting Question also only needs one mana to use, and can deal a similar amount of damage, but it can also be used against an opposing planeswalker. By clearing the battlefield of threats with these cards, you'll be able to attack for a ton of damage.
Azorius Soldiers
The next deck I have for you features a Soldier theme. Let's take a look at the deck.
Azorius Soldiers | BLB Standard | victor05093, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (33)
- 2 Coppercoat Vanguard
- 2 Myrel, Shield of Argive
- 2 Yotian Frontliner
- 2 Zephyr Sentinel
- 3 Harbin, Vanguard Aviator
- 3 Recruitment Officer
- 3 Warden of the Inner Sky
- 4 Resolute Reinforcements
- 4 Siege Veteran
- 4 Skystrike Officer
- 4 Valiant Veteran
- Instants (2)
- 2 Protect the Negotiators
- Enchantments (3)
- 3 Case of the Gateway Express
- Lands (22)
- 3 Island
- 6 Plains
- 1 Fortified Beachhead
- 4 Adarkar Wastes
- 4 Cavern of Souls
- 4 Seachrome Coast
As far as kindred decks go, Soldiers offer some of the most synergy you'll find in Standard. Valiant Veteran pumps up all of your other Soldiers, giving them a +1/+1 bonus. Since all of the creatures in this deck are Soldiers, that equates to a lot of extra stats. Coppercoat Vanguard also offers a +1/+0 bonus to other Humans, which applies to nearly all of the other creatures in this deck. With the amount of bonus power you can get for your creatures, this deck really packs a punch.
In addition to the ongoing bonuses both Coppercoat Vanguard and Valiant Veteran provide, you can gain another bonus when you attack while you have Harbin, Vanguard Aviator on the battlefield. As long as you attack with five or more Soldiers, your creatures will gain +1/+1 and flying until the end of the turn. This will likely make Harbin, Vanguard Aviator a target for your opponent's removal spells, so be sure to protect him with Protect the Negotiators if at all possible.
Orzhov Humans
The final deck I have for you is all based around Human creatures, and the synergy they provide. Let's take a look at the deck.
Orzhov Humans | BLB Standard | HelloGoodGame, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (35)
- 2 Evolved Sleeper
- 2 Jirina, Dauntless General
- 2 Massacre Girl, Known Killer
- 2 Recruitment Officer
- 2 Tenth District Hero
- 3 Anointed Peacekeeper
- 3 Eriette of the Charmed Apple
- 3 Knight-Errant of Eos
- 4 Coppercoat Vanguard
- 4 Spellbook Vendor
- 4 Spiteful Hexmage
- 4 Warden of the Inner Sky
- Enchantments (3)
- 3 Ossification
- Lands (22)
- 5 Swamp
- 9 Plains
- 2 Caves of Koilos
- 2 Concealed Courtyard
- 4 Cavern of Souls
Much like the previous Soldier deck, this deck employs Coppercoat Vanguard, who provides a +1/+0 bonus and ward 1 to each other Human you control. However, in this deck, those bonuses will apply to every other creature, since they're all Humans. You can also gain some extra +1/+1 counters on Warden of the Inner Sky by tapping your other creatures. Once Warden of the Inner Sky has three counters on it, it will gain flying and vigilance, making it both a great attacker and a great defender.
This deck also benefits from creating Roles for its creatures to use. Spiteful Hexmage creates a Cursed Role token attached to a creature you control when it enters the battlefield. Spellbook Vendor offers you a repeatable way of creating Sorcerer Role tokens that you can attach to your creatures. With these Roles, you'll be able to drain your opponent's life total each turn a number of points equal to the number of Auras you control, while you have Eriette of the Charmed Apple on the battlefield.
Wrapping Up
All of the decks I provided you this week are rotation-proof, allowing you to play them after Standard rotation happens in a few weeks. They also all happen to be centered around specific creature types. Be sure to join me next week when I bring you more rotation-proof decks that aren't kindred specific.
What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
