Hello everyone. Over the past month, I've been looking at decks that all feature a specific color. Four weeks ago, I started with White and last week we looked at Red decks. This week, it's time to take a look at decks featuring Green mana. Let's get started.
Mono-Green Stompy
Green decks are well-known for having huge creatures that can power their way through an opponent's defenses. The Mono-Green deck I have for you this week is an example of one of these decks. Let's take a look at it.
Mono-Green Stompy | BLB Standard | LegenVD, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (26)
- 2 Evolving Adaptive
- 4 Bloated Contaminator
- 4 Keen-Eyed Curator
- 4 Outcaster Trailblazer
- 4 Pawpatch Recruit
- 4 Scrapshooter
- 4 Valley Mightcaller
- Instants (2)
- 2 Tail Swipe
- Sorceries (4)
- 4 Hard-Hitting Question
- Enchantments (6)
- 2 Hunter's Talent
- 4 Innkeeper's Talent
- Lands (22)
- 18 Forest
- 4 Oakhollow Village
Valley Mightcaller is a terrific creature in this deck. Whenever another Frog, Rabbit, or Raccoon, (there are no Squirrels in this deck), comes into play, Valley Mightcaller received a +1/+1 counter. Becoming big like this normally would simply result in having Valley Mightcaller become chump blocked, however, since this Frog Warrior has trample, that's not a problem. Crush through your opponent's defensive creatures and deal any remaining damage to your opponent's life total.
Similarly, Pawpatch Recruit is another 1-drop in this deck that has trample and a way of obtaining +1/+1 counters for your team. It also has an offspring ability, which you should usually try to utilize, as this will create a token copy of Pawpatch Recruit, giving you double the bonus. By placing these +1/+1 counters strategically, you'll be able to deal a ton of damage to your opponent, regardless of the number of blockers they have.
Selesyna Enchantments
Next, we'll add some White mana to the mix and look at a Selesnya deck focused on enchantments. Let's check it out.

- Lands (22)
- 6 Forest

- 2 Brushland
- 4 Fabled Passage
- 4 Razorverge Thicket
- Sideboard (13)

- 1 Heliod, the Radiant Dawn // Heliod, the Warped Eclipse
- 1 Slumbering Keepguard

- 1 Steel Seraph
- 1 Archon's Glory
- 1 Airtight Alibi
- 1 Buried in the Garden
- 1 Hunter's Talent
- 1 Innkeeper's Talent
- 1 Temporary Lockdown
- 1 Virtue of Loyalty
- 1 Invasion of Theros // Ephara, Ever-Sheltering
Calix, Guided by Fate allows you to create a token copy of a nonlegendary enchantment you control, once per turn, whenever he or an enchanted creature you control deals combat damage to your opponent. By doing this to create a token copy of Caretaker's Talent, you'll be able to draw extra cards whenever a token you control enters play, limited to once per turn. You can also use the Chapter 2 and 3 abilities of Three Blind Mice to create additional token copies of Caretaker's Talent, which will allow you to draw even more cards.
By creating all of these token enchantments, you can gain a lot of +1/+1 counters while you have Calix, Guided by Fate in play. Placing those counters will allow your creatures to survive being targeted with direct damage spells much of the time. Another benefit of having additional token enchantments on the battlefield is that Regal Bunnicorn will become a massive threat, since its power and toughness are each equal to the number of nonland permanents you control.
Simic Merfolk
Moving over to the Simic color combination, I have a deck for you that features the Merfolk creature type. Let's take a look at the deck.
Simic Merfolk | BLB Standard | jamsnitro, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (28)
- 1 Jadelight Spelunker
- 3 Mockingbird
- 4 Cenote Scout
- 4 Dreamdew Entrancer
- 4 Forensic Researcher
- 4 Mistway Spy
- 4 Sentinel of the Nameless City
- 4 Vodalian Hexcatcher
- Instants (4)
- 4 Meeting of Minds
- Enchantments (4)
- 4 Deeproot Pilgrimage
- Artifacts (3)
- 3 Agatha's Soul Cauldron
- Lands (23)
- 2 Forest
- 7 Island
- 2 Mirrex
- 4 Botanical Sanctum
- 4 Cavern of Souls
- 4 Yavimaya Coast
This deck gains a lot from having at least one copy of Deeproot Pilgrimage on the battlefield. This allows you to create a 1/1 Merfolk creature token with hexproof any time one or more nontoken Merfolk you control becomes tapped. This works very well when you use either activated ability of Forensic Researcher.
While Mockingbird isn't technically a Merfolk, it certainly fits into this deck nicely. As the game progresses, you'll be able to have Mockingbird enter play as a copy of any of your creatures. My personal favorite for it to copy is Vodalian Hexcatcher, as all of your other Merfolk will get a +1/+1 bonus, but there might be reasons to choose a different creature. It's also possible to come into play as a copy of a creature your opponent controls, which can be game changing.
Golgari Ramp
Green decks are often known for ramping their mana production, and this next deck is an example of this. It adds Black mana as a means of protection and recursion. Let's take a look at the deck.

- Creatures (18)
- 2 Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal // Temple of the Dead
- 2 Lumra, Bellow of the Woods
- 2 Vorinclex // The Grand Evolution
- 3 Blossoming Tortoise
- 3 Clifftop Lookout
- 3 Nissa, Resurgent Animist
- 3 Vaultborn Tyrant
- Instants (6)
- 3 Cut Down
- 3 Go for the Throat
- Sorceries (6)
- 1 Duress
- 2 Gix's Command
- 3 Deadly Cover-Up
- Enchantments (3)
- 3 Virtue of Persistence
- Artifacts (3)
- 3 Heaped Harvest
- Lands (24)
- 4 Swamp
- 5 Forest
- 2 Blooming Marsh
- 2 Fountainport
- 2 Restless Cottage
- 2 Underground Mortuary
- 3 Llanowar Wastes
- 4 Fabled Passage
By utilizing the abilities of Clifftop Lookout, Blossoming Tortoise, and Heaped Harvest, you can get additional lands onto the battlefield, accelerating your mana production. Use those extra lands to be able to cast Lumra, Bellow of the Woods right away. Lumra's power and toughness are each equal to the number of lands you control, plus it has both vigilance and reach, making it good for both offense and defense.
As mentioned before the decklist, the addition of Black mana allows you to cast some terrific removal spells. Cut Down, Go for the Throat, Gix's Command, and Deadly Cover-Up are great spells that will help reduce the number of creatures your opponent has in play. There's also Virtue of Persistence, whose adventure, Locthwain Storm, can be used as a creature removal spell, but can also be cast as an enchantment offering you the chance to return creatures from both player's graveyards to the battlefield.
Gruul Tokens
The final deck I have for you this week is another token-based deck, but this one adds Red mana to help cast some truly large spells. Let's check it out.
Gruul Tokens | BLB Standard | Redd_Cat_MTG, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (8)
- 2 Bristlebud Farmer
- 2 Vaultborn Tyrant
- 4 Roxanne, Starfall Savant
- Planeswalkers (4)
- 2 Lukka, Bound to Ruin
- 2 Nissa, Ascended Animist
- Instants (4)
- 1 Pawpatch Formation
- 3 Torch the Tower
- Sorceries (6)
- 3 Awaken the Woods
- 3 For the Common Good
- Enchantments (6)
- 2 Night of the Sweets' Revenge
- 4 Welcome to Sweettooth
- Artifacts (8)
- 4 Heaped Harvest
- 4 Legion Extruder
- Lands (24)
- 4 Mountain
- 8 Forest
- 1 Fountainport
- 1 Restless Ridgeline
- 2 Mirrex
- 4 Commercial District
- 4 Fabled Passage
The main objective for this deck is to create a lot of Food tokens that will be used to help cast Awaken the Woods, allowing you to go wide when attacking. You can create these Food tokens with the use of Pawpatch Formation and Bristlebud Farmer. Once you have some Food tokens in play, you can make more copies of them with For the Common Good. Then, cast Night of the Sweets' Revenge which allows your Food tokens to tap for one Green mana. Get a copy of Roxanne, Starfall Savant into play, as she will basically double the mana created when you tap an artifact token for mana. Use that mana to make a bunch of 1/1 Forest Dryad land creature tokens and proceed to attack with them.
There are also other tokens that you can create with this deck that will be beneficial to you. Legion Extruder can create an army of 3/3 Golem artifact creature tokens. Welcome to Sweettooth creates both a 1/1 Human creature token as well as a Food token. Even both planeswalkers, Lukka, Bound to Ruin and Nissa, Ascended Animist, have loyalty abilities that you can use to create 3/3 Phyrexian Beast and X/X Phyrexian Horror creature tokens. Once you have some of these tokens in play, you can even cast For the Common Good for a single Green mana (making X equal 0) to make your tokens indestructible until your next turn, and gaining 1 life for each token you control.
Wrapping Up
Green decks have the potential to have some very large creatures in them, as well as many ways of making your small creatures larger throughout the course of the game. Combining Green with other colors opens up new possibilities, offering new ways to protect your team, draw cards, or destroy your opponent's threats.
