Mono-Color in Dominaria United Standard

Reddit

Hello everyone. Now that Dominaria United is here, it's time for new decks. Usually when a new set releases, the easiest type of deck to build will be a mono-colored deck. This week I have moon-colored decks for each color that you can use, whether you're a new Magic player or whether you've been playing for years. Let's get started.

Mono-Green Aggro

We'll get started with Mono-Green this week, taking a look at a very aggressive, creature-filled deck. Here's the decklist.

Llanowar Loamspeaker
Llanowar Loamspeaker does a great job of providing this deck with a little additional mana, when needed. In conjunction with Augur of Autumn, you'll have access to lands, and eventually creatures, from the top of your deck that you can play and cast. This helps give you additional options that your opponent doesn't have. Llanowar Loamspeaker can also turn a land of yours into a 3/3 Elemental creature, but it can only do this at sorcery speed. That means the land can only be used as an attacker, and cannot be used for defense.

Dominaria United provides a couple of terrific finishers for this deck. Defiler of Vigor is a huge 6/6 creature with trample. While it is on the battlefield, you'll add a +1/+1 counter to each creature you control whenever you cast a Green permanent spell. This can allow your team to attack for massive amounts of damage. Silverback Elder is the other potential finisher in this deck. It also has an ability that triggers when you cast a creature spell, which has multiple modes for you to choose from. Having either Defiler of Vigor or Silverback Elder in play will provide problems for your opponent, but having both can almost guarantee your victory.

Mono-White Aggro

Next, we come to Mono-White, which can make things problematic for your opponent to cast spells. Let's take a look at the deck.

Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
Thalia, Guardian of Thraben makes all noncreature spells cost one additional mana to cast, which is why this deck is mostly creatures. Anointed Peacekeeper forces your opponent to pay an additional two-mana to cast or activate any abilities of a card chosen from your opponent's hand. Both of these will make it more difficult for your opponent to cast their spells, but in the event that they get a creature into play that you would prefer they didn't have, you can cast Brutal Cathar // Moonrage Brute, which can exile it as long as it is daytime.

Since you're able to add mana to the cost of your opponent's spells, they might have trouble casting any creature removal spells. However, if they do, you can rely on Serra Paragon to help you out. While this Angel is on the battlefield, once during your turn, you'll be able to cast a permanent spell with a mana value of three or less. Even though it will be exiled the next time it goes to the graveyard, your opponent will surely be frustrated that they'll need to destroy that creature for a second time. You'll also gain two points of life when that creature is exiled, giving you an additional advantage over your opponent.

Mono-Blue Flyers

The Mono-Blue deck I have for you is themed around flying creatures, which might be difficult for your opponent to defend against. Let's take a look at it.

Haughty Djinn
This deck only has one new creature from Dominaria United, but that creature is pivotal for this deck. Haughty Djinn provides you with a mana reduction of one for all instant and sorcery spells that you cast. That allows all of your instant and sorceries to be cast for a single Blue mana, making it very possible to cast multiple spells in a turn. This makes it easier for Ledger Shredder to connive. Haughty Djinn's power is also equal to the number of instant and sorcery spells in your graveyard, so it can get very powerful.

Since you're able to cast instant and sorcery spells easily, you'll often be able to draw an extra card by targeting Stormchaser Drake with one of those beneficial spells. Doing this will allow you to draw a card, which will trigger the ability of Faerie Vandal, giving it a +1/+1 counter. With all of these flying creatures, many of which will have +1/+1 counters, you can often attack for a lot of damage without being blocked.

Mono-Black Aggro

Our next deck is the Mono-Black deck. It's one of the best decks currently in Standard. Let's check it out.

Sheoldred, the Apocalypse
Sheoldred, the Apocalypse is currently my least favorite card to play against in Standard. For only four mana, she is a 4/5 creature with deathtouch. This would make her bad enough to deal with, but she also has another ability. With her on the battlefield, you'll gain two life whenever you draw a card. Conversely, your opponent will lose two life whenever they draw a card. Simply sit back with Sheoldred, keeping her as a potential blocker, and watch your opponent wither away as they draw a card each turn.

In addition to Sheoldred, the Apocalypse, this deck includes one of the best planeswalker cards from the past, Liliana of the Veil. Liliana has a -2 loyalty ability that forces a player to sacrifice a creature. Sure, they get to choose the creature to sacrifice, but this deck has a pair of creature removal spells that can often leave our opponent with only one creature on the battlefield. Both Cut Down and Infernal Grasp are extremely low mana value cards that work wonders in clearing your opponent's battlefield. By destroying some and forcing your opponent to sacrifice their other creatures, you can swing in for damage unopposed much of the time.

Mono-Red Aggro

The final deck I have for you this week is Mono-Red. As expected, it is quite aggressive and can win games in very little time. Let's take a look at the deck.

Radha's Firebrand
When Radha's Firebrand attacks, you choose a creature your opponent controls that has power less than Radha's Firebrand has that won't be able to block for the turn. Since Radha's Firebrand has a base power of three, you'll likely have some choice for this ability. You can also increase her power with +1/+1 counters from Thundering Raiju and bonuses from sources like Hammerhand.

Thundering Raiju can often finish off your opponent unexpectedly. When it attacks, you'll put a +1/+1 counter on any creature you control. Then, you'll deal one point of damage for each creature you control other than Thundering Raiju that is modified. Since Bloodthirsty Adversary, Phoenix Chick, and Shivan Devastator are all able to get +1/+1 counters on their own, you'll often be able to deal an additional four or five points of damage when Thundering Raiju attacks.

Wrapping Up

I've tried each of these decks out on Magic Arena and have had success with each of them. They can be a great deck to play to finish off a daily challenge requiring you to play cards of a certain color. Hopefully you can find similar success with these decks if you try them out for yourself.

What do you think of these decks? Do you have any suggestions for improvements? Let me know by leaving a comment below. Also, feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
