Hello everyone. Now that the previews for Duskmourn: House of Horror are over, we're all waiting in anticipation of building new decks with these cards. But Duskmourn doesn't officially release until September 27, so there is still a couple of weeks until those new decks are able to be built. In the meantime, there are still Standard events that you might want to attend, for which you might be looking for a new deck. I've got you covered. I have a few decks that you can build to help pass the time until the next set drops. Let's get started.
Selesnya Counters
We'll begin with a Selesnya deck that maximizes the effectiveness of +1/+1 counters. Let's take a look at the deck.
Selesnya Counters | BLB Standard | LegenVD, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (26)
- 2 Bristly Bill, Spine Sower
- 4 Botanical Brawler
- 4 Dusk Legion Duelist
- 4 Enduring Bondwarden
- 4 Ornery Tumblewagg
- 4 Ruin-Lurker Bat
- 4 Sunshower Druid
- Enchantments (4)
- 4 Innkeeper's Talent
- Artifacts (6)
- 2 Collector's Cage
- 4 Ozolith, the Shattered Spire
- Lands (24)
- 8 Forest
- 8 Plains
- 4 Brushland
- 4 Razorverge Thicket
Most of the creatures in this deck have ways of creating their own +1/+1 counters. One of my favorites is Bristly Bill, Spine Sower. While he might not enter play with any +1/+1 counters, he does allow you to place a +1/+1 counter on any creature you control whenever you achieve landfall. He also has an activated ability you can use later in the game to double the number of +1/+1 counters on each creature you control.
Another card that will put a +1/+1 counter on a creature you control each turn is Innkeeper's Talent. Once you get to level 2, your permanents with counters on them gain ward 1. At level 3, you'll always gain twice the amount of counters whenever a counter would be placed. With all of the +1/+1 counters that are possible with this deck, you should have no trouble rolling over most opponents.
Orzhov Poison Control
Next, I have a White & Black deck that is capable of winning via poison. Let's take a look at the deck.
Orzhov Poison Control | BLB Standard | LegenVD, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (14)
- 2 Annex Sentry
- 4 Bilious Skulldweller
- 4 Crawling Chorus
- 4 Jawbone Duelist
- Instants (8)
- 2 Cut Down
- 2 Whisper of the Dross
- 4 Anoint with Affliction
- Sorceries (4)
- 2 Drown in Ichor
- 2 White Sun's Twilight
- Enchantments (8)
- 4 Caretaker's Talent
- 4 Skrelv's Hive
- Lands (26)
- 4 Plains
- 4 Swamp
- 2 Scoured Barrens
- 4 Caves of Koilos
- 4 Concealed Courtyard
- 4 Mirrex
- 4 The Seedcore
Everything about this deck is used to control your opponent's side of the battlefield. There are multiple spells which you can use to remove your opponent's creatures from play. Some of them have the added effect of proliferating. If possible, you'll want to try to sneak in at least one point of damage before playing those spells, but if not, the main thing is removing their threats and blockers from the battlefield.
Caretaker's Talent helps a lot in this deck. With either Skrelv's Hive or Mirrex in play, you'll be able to draw extra cards when you create Phyrexian Mite tokens. As it gains levels, those benefits grow, as you can create additional token copies of a token you control. When maxed out, all of your creature tokens get a +2/+2 bonus, making them more credible threats.
Rakdos Free Spells
Nothing is more dangerous than being able to cast a spell for free. Let's take a look at a deck that can do just that.
Rakdos Free Spells | BLB Standard | MtgMalone, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (17)
- 3 Etali, Primal Conqueror
- 3 Preacher of the Schism
- 3 Sheoldred, the Apocalypse
- 4 The Infamous Cruelclaw
- 4 Trumpeting Carnosaur
- Planeswalkers (3)
- 3 Chandra, Hope's Beacon
- Instants (6)
- 3 Bitter Triumph
- 3 Cut Down
- Sorceries (6)
- 3 Breach the Multiverse
- 3 Brotherhood's End
- Enchantments (3)
- 3 Virtue of Persistence
When you attack with The Infamous Cruelclaw, if you deal combat damage to your opponent, you can exile cards from your library until you reach a nonland card. You can then cast that card by discarding another card, rather than paying its mana cost. With a bit of luck, you'll be able to cast big creatures like Etali, Primal Conqueror // Etali, Primal Sickness and Trumpeting Carnosaur essentially for free.
Some additional ways for this deck to put permanents into play for free are Breach the Multiverse and Virtue of Persistence. Both of these spells allow you to choose cards from either player to put into play for free. Nothing feels better than defeating your opponent with their own creature.
Boros Soldiers
The final deck I have for you is a kindred deck featuring Soldiers. Let's check it out.
Boros Soldiers | BLB Standard | JayVillain, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (26)
- 2 Warden of the Inner Sky
- 4 Anim Pakal, Thousandth Moon
- 4 Baird, Argivian Recruiter
- 4 Coppercoat Vanguard
- 4 Recruitment Officer
- 4 Resolute Reinforcements
- 4 Valiant Veteran
- Instants (6)
- 2 Get Lost
- 4 Lightning Helix
- Sorceries (3)
- 3 Dewdrop Cure
- Enchantments (4)
- 4 Warleader's Call
- Lands (22)
- 5 Mountain
- 8 Plains
- 1 Restless Bivouac
- 2 Cavern of Souls
- 3 Battlefield Forge
- 3 Inspiring Vantage
- Sideboard (7)
- 2 Brightblade Stoat
- 1 Destroy Evil
- 1 Rabid Gnaw
- 1 Requisition Raid
- 2 Hop to It
Valiant Veteran grants a bonus of +1/+1 to all of your other Soldiers. This benefit combines very nicely alongside the +1/+0 bonus that Coppercoat Vanguard provides to other Humans since Valiant Veteran is the only non-Human Soldier in this deck. While none of the Soldiers in this deck have trample, these bonuses will allow you to stop your opponent from attacking, or take out a few blockers when you attack.
Warleader's Call does a lot of heavy lifting in this deck. It provides all of your creatures a +1/+1 bonus. It also deals 1 damage to each opponent whenever you have a creature enter the battlefield under your control. You can often finish off your opponent with this damage, while building up your defenses by creating creature tokens with Anim Pakal, Thousandth Moon, Baird, Argivian Recruiter, and Recruitment Officer.
Wrapping Up
Even though it's nearly time for a new set to be released, there are still a ton of great decks that you can play with our current card pool. Enjoy these decks while you can, because they're sure to be improved upon once Duskmourn: House of Horror releases.
What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
