Hello, everyone! With the prerelease of Throne of Eldraine upon us this weekend, it's time to start thinking of decks to play featuring some of these new cards. This week I have for you a few decks that will help start the brewing process for you. These decks might not be perfect right out of the gate, but they're good starting points that you can use to tailor to your local meta. Let's get started.
Dimir Mill
The first deck I have for you features an alternate win condition, so you know it's a deck I'll have to try out. Let's take a look at it:

If you've read my articles for any amount of time, you'll know that I love playing decks that win in unconventional ways. This deck does just that by attempting to put all of the cards from your opponent's library into their graveyard. Merfolk Secretkeeper helps out during the early game when you cast it as an adventure as Venture Deeper. This allows you to start the milling by putting their top four cards from their library into their graveyard. Then, you can cast Merfolk Secretkeeper from exile, which acts as a great creature to block with.
You can then keep the milling happening by casting Ashiok, Dream Render and Jace, Wielder of Mysteries. Ashiok allows you to mill four cards with each activation of its loyalty ability. This allows you to potentially mill a total of twenty cards before using all of Ashiok's loyalty. With a full playset of Ashiok in the deck, you shouldn't have any problem getting a few activations before your opponent decides to attack Ashiok directly. Jace can help with your milling plan by using his +1 loyalty ability, which will mill two cards from a target player's library. Normally you'll target yourself when you use this ability, but not in this deck. That's because of Drown in the Loch, which counters spells or destroys creatures based on the number of cards in that player's graveyard.
As you play this deck, if you find the milling plan isn't working as well as you'd like, there are plenty of other ways to win. Thief of Sanity helps you reduce your opponent's library and also allows you the opportunity to use their own cards against them. Depending on how lucky you are, you might be able to exile their best threat and then cast it yourself. If that doesn't work for you, this deck also runs a couple of copies of God-Eternal Kefnet. Kefnet is very difficult to keep off of the battlefield for long, unless your opponent has a way to counter it. Even if they do manage to remove Kefnet, they'll have to find a different way to deal with Nightveil Predator, thanks to it having hexproof.
Orzhov Knights
The next deck I have for you features one of the most popular tribes featured in Throne of Eldraine, Knights. Let's take a look at it:
Orzhov Knights | ELD Standard | MTG_Joe, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (25)
- 2 Cavalier of Night
- 3 Midnight Reaper
- 4 Acclaimed Contender
- 4 Knight of the Ebon Legion
- 4 Murderous Rider
- 4 Smitten Swordmaster
- 4 Worthy Knight
- Planeswalkers (5)
- 2 Gideon Blackblade
- 3 Sorin, Vengeful Bloodlord
- Enchantments (4)
- 4 Oath of Kaya
- Artifacts (2)
- 2 Icon of Ancestry
- Lands (24)
- 4 Plains
- 5 Swamp
- 1 Castle Ardenvale
- 2 Castle Locthwain
- 4 Godless Shrine
- 4 Temple of Silence
- 4 Tournament Grounds
- Sideboard (15)
- 1 Bolas's Citadel
- 3 Duress
- 2 Glass Casket
- 2 Legion's End
- 1 Liliana, Dreadhorde General
- 4 Noxious Grasp
- 2 Sorcerous Spyglass
Knight of the Ebon Legion has been a player recently in Vampire decks. When rotation happens, the majority of the Vampire cards leave Standard, but thanks to Knight of the Ebon Legion also being a Knight, it should still see some play. It not only acts as an early threat, but it's also a late-game place to sink mana into. Another great place to put your extra mana into is Castle Ardenvale. While this land only creates 1/1 Humans, not Knights, those creatures can still be used as a way to outnumber your opponent to push through the last few points of damage, or as chump blockers.
Another great Knight to play early on is Worthy Knight. Worthy Knight helps add to your Human army every time you cast a Knight spell. Because of the dual nature of this deck, when you cast Icon of Ancestry, you might have a tough decision to make when deciding to choose between Human and Knight as your chosen creature type. You'll likely want to choose Knight first, as that will allow you to use Icon of Ancestry as a means to filter through your deck for your other Knights. However, if you're close to winning the game, choosing Human might give you enough of a boost to end the game sooner than you would by choosing Knights.
One of my favorite cards from Throne of Eldraine is in this deck. Murderous Rider can first be cast as Swift End, acting as the latest spin on Hero's Downfall. While it does cost you two points of life to destroy any creature or planeswalker, that life can be regained thanks to the lifelink that Murderous Rider offers.
Esper Faeries
The final deck I have for you this week features another cool tribe from Throne of Eldraine, Faeries. Let's take a look at the deck:
Esper Faeries | ELD Standard | KhaueLiuziengerb, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (30)
- 2 Faerie Formation
- 4 Alela, Artful Provocateur
- 4 Brazen Borrower
- 4 Faerie Miscreant
- 4 Faerie Vandal
- 4 Hushbringer
- 4 Hypnotic Sprite
- 4 Rankle, Master of Pranks
- Enchantments (4)
- 4 Prison Realm
- Artifacts (2)
- 2 Icon of Ancestry
- Lands (24)
- 4 Island
- 1 Castle Vantress
- 1 Fabled Passage
- 2 Dismal Backwater
- 2 Temple of Silence
- 2 Tranquil Cove
- 4 Godless Shrine
- 4 Hallowed Fountain
- 4 Watery Grave
- Sideboard (15)
- 2 Devout Decree
- 2 Drown in the Loch
- 3 Duress
- 2 Legion's End
- 2 Noxious Grasp
- 2 Time Wipe
- 2 Unmoored Ego
Like our last deck, this deck features a couple of copies of Icon of Ancestry. However, with this deck, the correct creature choice will always be Faeries. Even the mana sink, Faerie Formation, will create additional Faeries. The deck also includes Alela, Artful Provocateur, which also has the potential to create additional Faerie tokens.
Alela, Artful Provocateur also provides a +1/+0 bonus to all other creatures you control with flying. Since all of the creatures in this deck and all of the tokens you're able to create have flying, she will buff each of your other creatures. That allows your typically smaller creatures the ability to take down much bigger threats.
Hushbringer is a nice addition to Standard. Just as we lose Tocatli Honor Guard, Hushbringer comes in to save the day. While it's a little more fragile than Tocatli Honor Guard is, losing a point of toughness is more than made up by the ability to cause abilities to not trigger when a creature dies. Plus, it has flying, so you'll be able to attack with it a little easier than you could with Tocatli Honor Guard.
Wrapping Up
Throne of Eldraine is almost here and I'm excited. If you're able to play in a prerelease this weekend, I wish you good luck. Most importantly, though, have fun while you're there.
