Hello everyone. I enjoy playing decks that create creature tokens. Those tokens can be used to do various things, from allowing you to go wide to being sacrificed for value. This week I have a few decks that like to create creature tokens that you can try out. Let's get started.
Mardu Sacrifice
Our first deck this week finds added value when its own creatures go to the graveyard. Let's take a look at the deck.
Mardu Sacrifice | DMU Standard | whiteraven, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (19)
- 1 Lagomos, Hand of Hatred
- 1 Sheoldred, the Apocalypse
- 1 Squee, Dubious Monarch
- 2 Braids, Arisen Nightmare
- 2 Serra Paragon
- 2 Voldaren Epicure
- 3 Cult Conscript
- 3 Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim
- 4 Bloodtithe Harvester
- Planeswalkers (1)
- 1 Ob Nixilis, the Adversary
- Sorceries (4)
- 2 Eaten Alive
- 2 Rite of Oblivion
- Enchantments (7)
- 1 Stronghold Arena
- 3 The Meathook Massacre
- 3 Wedding Announcement // Wedding Festivity
- Artifacts (6)
- 2 Weatherlight Compleated
- 4 Oni-Cult Anvil
Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim helps this deck stabilize very quickly. While Elas il-Kor is on the battlefield, you'll gain a point of life whenever another creature enters the battlefield under your control. Your opponent will also lose a point of life whenever another creature you control dies. When you create creature tokens, you're helping to increase the likelihood that you'll stay alive in the game longer, while preventing your opponent from attacking. By simply having a stream of chump blockers, you can whittle away your opponent's health while increasing your own.
Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim works hand in hand with The Meathook Massacre, which similarly can increase your health while diminishing your opponent's. The Meathook Massacre is one of the best cards currently in Standard, and for good reason. It works well in a sacrifice deck, like this one. You'll get added value from it if you have Lagomos, Hand of Hatred in play. Lagomos will create a 2/1 Elemental creature token that has both trample and haste. At the next end step, this token will be sacrificed, so you're sure to deal some damage with it as long as The Meathook Massacre is on the battlefield.
Another creature that really helps this deck out is Braids, Arisen Nightmare. While Braids is on the battlefield, you'll be able to sacrifice an artifact, creature, enchantment, land, or planeswalker. Doing this will force your opponent to make a similar sacrifice or suffer life loss of two points. This can allow you to clear out potential blockers while also dealing damage to your opponent as long as you have either The Meathook Massacre or Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim in play.
Abzan Tokens
Next, I have a deck that starts off going wide, but changes things up after sideboarding. Let's take a look at the deck.

Wedding Announcement // Wedding Festivity is a very popular card in Standard. It has the potential to create up to three 1/1 Human creature tokens before transforming into Wedding Festivity. Getting these tokens is exactly what this deck wants so that it can go wide. Wedding Festivity gives a +1/+1 bonus to all of your creatures, making them more powerful and durable. If you're able to get multiple copies of Wedding Announcement into play, you'll be able to create quite a few creature tokens that will each be buffed by Wedding Festivity, giving you a lot of value.
Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia can be an especially frustrating creature to play against. At the beginning of your end step, Jadar will create a 2/2 Zombie creature token with decayed if you don't already have one. While this token won't be able to block, it makes for a great attacker. This is especially true if you have one or more copies of Wedding Festivity in play. You also won't mind attacking into creatures that are bigger than the Zombie token is, especially after sideboarding.
Once sideboarding happens, you'll want to make sure to add The Meathook Massacre to this deck. That will allow you to deal direct damage (actually loss of life, which is slightly different, but most of the time is equitable) to your opponent when any of your tokens die. This includes the Zombie creature tokens with decayed that Jadar creates.
Jund Tokens
Our final deck this week offers you a choice of the creature tokens it creates. Let's check it out.
Jund Tokens | DMU Standard | Metrman2, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (14)
- 1 Nemata, Primeval Warden
- 1 Tenacious Underdog
- 2 Sheoldred, the Apocalypse
- 3 Gala Greeters
- 3 Jinnie Fay, Jetmir's Second
- 4 Bloodtithe Harvester
- Planeswalkers (5)
- 2 Jaya, Fiery Negotiator
- 3 Ob Nixilis, the Adversary
- Instants (3)
- 1 Tear Asunder
- 2 Infernal Grasp
- Sorceries (1)
- 1 Light Up the Night
- Enchantments (9)
- 1 Ghoulish Procession
- 1 The Meathook Massacre
- 3 The Cruelty of Gix
- 4 Fable of the Mirror-Breaker // Reflection of Kiki-Jiki
- Artifacts (3)
- 3 Weatherlight Compleated
By having a copy of Jinnie Fay, Jetmir's Second on the battlefield, you'll be able to create either a 2/2 Cat creature token with haste or a 3/1 Dog creature token with vigilance whenever you would create any other type of token instead. That means that in the early stages of the game when mana is sparser, you can create a tapped Treasure token with Gala Greeters whenever another creature enters the battlefield under your control. However, later in the game, you can instead create either a Cat or Dog that will help you more directly against your opponent.
There's a number of other cards in this deck that will also create creature tokens for you. Nemata, Primeval Warden can create 1/1 Saproling tokens. Both Ob Nixilis, the Adversary and Jaya, Fiery Negotiator have loyalty abilities that will create creature tokens. There's also Bloodtithe Harvester that will create a Blood token for you, which is replaceable by a Cat or Dog created by Jinnie Fay.
Since you have all of these tokens, chump blocking will be easy. This will allow you to 'crew' Weatherlight Compleated quickly, getting this 5/5 flier into the air where it can do some damage to your opponent. You can also draw a lot of cards as the game continues once you hit seven phyresis counters on Weatherlight Compleated, giving you an advantage over your opponent.
Wrapping Up
Each of these decks likes to create creature tokens throughout the course of a game. The way those tokens are utilized is different enough to give each of these decks a different feel when playing them. Which one is your favorite?
