More Spicy Multicolor Decks for Wilds of Eldraine Standard

Reddit

Hello everyone. After looking at some mono-colored decks for a couple of weeks, I started looking at multicolored decks last week. I'm continuing that this week with a pair of two-colored decks and one tri-colored deck. Each of these decks features some great, new cards from Wilds of Eldraine. Let's get started with the first deck.

Azorius Whale

We'll start off this week with an Azorius control deck featuring Horned Loch-Whale. While control decks aren't usually my favorite type of deck to play, I find this one to be interesting. Let's take a look at the deck.

Horned Loch-Whale
Horned Loch-Whale is a massive 6/6 creature for six mana. While it does have flash, it will enter the battlefield tapped if you cast it on your opponent's turn. Normally when a creature has flash, the plan will be to flash it in as a surprise blocker, but that trick doesn't work with Horned Loch-Whale. The only real benefit to flashing it in, then, is that you can cast it after your opponent has tapped out to make sure it won't get countered.

The adventure side of Horned Loch-Whale, Lagoon Breach, is a terrific way to control your opponent's biggest threats. Once your opponent attacks with a creature, you can cast Lagoon Breach, targeting that creature, and your opponent will then decide whether to put it on top of or on the bottom of their library. If they put it on top, they'll be able to cast it again, but hopefully you'll have a counterspell ready for it.

Speaking of counterspells, this deck includes a fair number of them. Make Disappear is a soft counterspell, giving your opponent the opportunity to pay additional mana instead of having their spell countered. It's great to play early on, but loses some punch later on. Luckily, you have Dissipate and Devious Cover-Up for those times. After sideboarding, you have even more counterspells, with the ability to add another copy of Devious Cover-Up and a copy of Negate.

Golgari Lifegain

The next deck I have for you focuses on gaining life, not only as a means of staying alive longer, but as a weapon against its opponent. Let's check it out.

Gumdrop Poisoner
Gumdrop Poisoner is one of the stars in this deck, giving an opposing creature -X/-X when it enters the battlefield, where X is equal to the amount of life you've gained this turn. In a deck like this, the value of X can be a considerable amount. You might have already cast Tempt with Treats, the adventure side of Gumdrop Poisoner, earlier in the game. Doing this creates a Food token, which can be used to provide you with some extra life.

Food tokens aren't the only ways to gain life in this deck, though. Sorin the Mirthless can create 2/3 Vampire creature tokens that have flying and lifelink. Gala Greeters can gain two points of life if another creature has entered the battlefield under your control this turn. Even Haywire Mite will give you two points of life whenever it dies. Oh yeah, I almost forgot that this deck runs arguably the best creature currently in Standard, Sheoldred, the Apocalypse, who also gives you two points of life whenever you draw a card.

If you have a copy of Virtue of Persistence on the battlefield, you can return a creature from any graveyard onto the battlefield under your control. And, since Virtue of Persistence isn't legendary, you can have multiple copies in play at the same time. By returning the creatures that you've killed, and by continually casting Mosswood Dreadknight again and again, your opponent will feel as if your threats are never ending, which is pretty accurate.

Jeskai Blink

The final deck I have for you this week is looking to maximize the effectiveness of its ETB (enter the battlefield) effects. Let's take a look at the deck.

Virtue of Knowledge
While you have a copy of Virtue of Knowledge on the battlefield, the triggered abilities that happen whenever a permanent you control enters the battlefield happen an additional time. Plus, Virtue of Knowledge isn't legendary, so it is entirely possible (although very unlikely) that you could have all four copies of it in play, giving you five ability triggers at once.

Each and every creature in this deck has an ability that triggers when it enters the battlefield. Most are fairly mundane, but some can be game-changing. Spirited Companion and Circuit Mender fall into the former category. When Spirited Companion enters the battlefield, you'll draw a card. That is a fairly innocent ability until you're able to draw multiple cards at once, giving you card advantage. Similarly, when Circuit Mender enters the battlefield, you'll gain two points of life. Imagine how game-changing gaining six or eight points of life, instead, would be.

Aether Channeler and Etali, Primal Conqueror // Etali, Primal Sickness are firmly in the game-changing realm, with their enter the battlefield effects. To make things even better, this deck runs a full playset of Nahiri's Resolve. While this enchantment is on the battlefield, you'll be able to exile any number of nontoken artifacts and creatures at the beginning of your end step. They will be returned to the battlefield at the beginning of your next upkeep. That 'blinking' effect allows you to get a lot of extra value from all of your ETB effects.

Wrapping Up

While all three of these decks interest me, I think I'm most interested in trying out the Jeskai Blink deck. I really like explosive decks, and that one certainly fits the bill. Which of these is your favorite?

What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
