Fun and Competitive Decks for Wilds of Eldraine Standard

Reddit

Hello everyone. Wilds of Eldraine has provided us with a lot of new cards that are seeing play all across Standard. This week I've got four new decks that all feature new cards that are both fun and competitive. Let's get started.

Dimir Mill

It's no secret that I love decks that feature an alternative way to win, so this first deck this week has my interest piqued. Let's take a look at the deck.

Terisian Mindbreaker
Mill decks have been contenders in Standard for quite a while now. The game plan is to mill out your opponent using a combination of Terisian Mindbreaker attack triggers and Jace, the Perfected Mind's -X loyalty ability. You'll try to keep your life total as high as possible by using various creature removal spells, like Go for the Throat and Sheoldred's Edict, to destroy your opponent's most potent threats.

With Wilds of Eldraine, there are a few additions that can make this deck a little better. By playing The Irencrag, you have a mana rock that can accelerate your mana a bit. There's also The End, which can be a great way to remove a few additional cards from your opponent's library. This deck also includes a pair of Cruel Somnophage, which will both mill your opponent of four cards (with its Can't Wake Up adventure), and act as a failsafe attacker in the event that you're not able to win via milling.

Golgari Stale Cookies

Next, I have a Black/Green deck that utilizes a pair of legendary creatures from Wilds of Eldraine to gain a lot of value. Let's take a look at it.

Syr Ginger, the Meal Ender
Greta, Sweettooth Scourge

By pairing Syr Ginger, the Meal Ender with Greta, Sweettooth Scourge, you can get a lot of +1/+1 counters and scry a ton of cards. That's because of Syr Ginger's ability which will give it a +1/+1 counter and allow you to scry 1 whenever another artifact you control is put into a graveyard from the battlefield. Since Great allows you to sacrifice Food tokens for either a +1/+1 counter, which can be placed on any creature, or to draw a card and lose a point of life, both creatures will benefit from the same action.

Greta creates a Food token when she enters the battlefield, but there is a lot of other Food in this deck that she can sacrifice. Welcome to Sweettooth will create a Food token during its second chapter. You'll also get a Food token when Tough Cookie enters the battlefield. But, Greta's abilities allow her to sacrifice a Food for an effect, which does not have to be a Food token. You can also sacrifice creatures that have the Food subtype, such as Tough Cookie, Gingerbrute, or even Syr Ginger himself.

Orzhov Superfriends

The next deck I have for you features quite a few planeswalkers. Let's take a look at the deck.

Ashiok, Wicked Manipulator
If you're a fan of planeswalkers, you'll want to try this deck out now, because with the shift to only having one planeswalker in each new release, Superfriends decks like this might not be feasible in the future once rotation happens. Generally, this deck will play much like a typical control deck; not the kind that counters your opponent's spells, but instead controlling the creatures on the battlefield with a variety of removal spells.

Once your opponent's forces have been effectively neutered, you can go on the offensive. This deck features seven different planeswalkers, and is capable of winning games in multiple ways. You can attempt to mill out your opponent using the -7 loyalty ability of Ashiok, Wicked Manipulator. You could poison your opponent with Vraska, Betrayal's Sting's -9 loyalty ability, then finish them off by proliferating. You can even win in the traditional way, by creating creature tokens with Sorin the Mirthless, The Eternal Wanderer, and The Wandering Emperor that you can attack with. Give yourself a challenge and try to win using a different method than in your previous game.

Selesnya Artifacts

The final deck I have for you features only a couple of cards from Wilds of Eldraine, making it a great choice to play if your budget is limited.

Elvish Archivist
Selesnya Artifact decks have been in Standard for quite a while. They tend to utilize Teething Wurmlet and Yotian Dissident along with a bunch of artifacts to gain extra life and +1/+1 counters. With your enlarged creatures, you can start swinging in, but to hit really hard, you'll want to cast Michiko's Reign of Truth // Portrait of Michiko. This can allow you back to back turns where you'll be attacking for a lot of damage.

Elvish Archivist fits into this archetype very nicely. It will gain a pair of +1/+1 counters whenever your first artifact of the turn enters the battlefield. You can also draw a card when your first enchantment enters play each turn. That's a lot of value provided by a two-mana creature. Also included in this deck are a pair of Gingerbrute. By paying a mana before attacking, you can make Gingerbrute unblockable by any creature that doesn't have haste. That can make Gingerbrute a target that must be destroyed right away, otherwise you'll soon be able to deal out quite a beating with this little food golem.

Wrapping Up

Whether aggro decks are your thing, or whether you prefer control decks, Wilds of Eldraine offers something for everyone. Each of the decks this week featured only two colors, making them great starting points into the format. Next week, I'll be looking at some three-color decks which will offer a ton of flexibility and potential.

What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
