Four Flavors of Boros

Reddit

Hello everyone. Last week I looked at some 5-color decks, which I enjoy playing occasionally. They aren't my favorite kind of decks, though. This week we'll be taking a look at four different builds featuring Red and White cards. These decks are the kind of decks that I can play over and over and never get bored. Let's get started.

Boros Tokens

We'll get started with a deck that loves filling up the battlefield with both creatures and creature tokens. Let's take a look at the deck.

Baird, Argivian Recruiter
This deck offers a variety of ways to create creature tokens. At the beginning of your end step, Baird, Argivian Recruiter will create a 1/1 Soldier creature token if you have a creature with more power than its base power. This can be easily achieved by both Hopeful Initiate and Thundering Raiju, thanks to their +1/+1 counters. You'll also create additional creature tokens with Adeline, Resplendent Cathar and Squee, Dubious Monarch whenever they attack. Finally, this deck includes a playset of Wedding Announcement // Wedding Festivity, which has become the premier means of creating creature tokens in White decks.

While playing this deck, if you ever find that the battlefield has gotten too crowded with potential blockers, you can opt to take the fight to the skies by casting Shivan Devastator. This Dragon Hydra can attack unexpectedly thanks to it having haste, and it can be as large as you want it to be, only restricted by the amount of mana you have. It's a terrific way to finish off an opponent who believes that their game has stabilized.

Fiery Arcane Bombardment

While the previous deck tried to win by having more creatures in play than the opponent, the next deck I have for you goes in the opposite direction. Let's take a look at it.

Arcane Bombardment
This deck has no creatures in it, instead relying on powerful spells to manage threats and to knock down your opponent's life total. You'll get additional use from your spells by having a copy of Arcane Bombardment in play. This will allow you to exile an instant or sorcery from your graveyard whenever you cast your first instant or sorcery spell each turn. You'll then be able to copy each card that you've exiled with Arcane Bombardment, casting those copies for free. Since nearly half of this deck is made up of instant and sorcery spells, you can get a lot of value from this.

Burn Down the House is one of the best spells to exile with Arcane Bombardment. It can be used to either create a trio of 1/1 Devil creature tokens, or deal five damage to each creature and planeswalker in play. One turn, you can create the Devil creature tokens, and on the next turn, deal five damage to everything, allowing your Devils to deal damage directly to your opponent. You'll also be able to deal additional direct damage with Lightning Strike and Sacred Fire. These spells allow you to take your opponent down without needing to attack.

Blessed Werewolves

Next, I have a deck featuring a few Werewolf creatures that can take down your opponent in no time. Let's take a look at it.

Reckless Stormseeker // Storm-Charged Slasher

Brutal Cathar // Moonrage Brute and Reckless Stormseeker // Storm-Charged Slasher are two of the Werewolf creatures in this deck that typically see a lot of play in Standard. Brutal Cathar can allow you to exile multiple of your opponent's creatures as long as you're able to continue transforming it. This can be done easily with the use of The Celestus. Once you've removed any opposition your opponent has in play, you can begin attacking, and Reckless Stormseeker helps a lot with this. You'll be able to give a creature you control haste in addition to a +1/+0 bonus. If Reckless Stormseeker has transformed into Storm-Charged Slasher, the bonus increases to +2/+0, plus that creature will also get trample.

The other Werewolf included in this deck doesn't see the same amount of play in Standard, but it has an ability that can be very useful when built around. I'm talking about Ill-Tempered Loner // Howlpack Avenger, who will deal an amount of damage to any target equal to the amount of damage that it is being dealt. Since Ill-Tempered Loner has a 3 toughness, you can target it with Sacred Fire, dealing two points of damage to it, which will then be dealt to one of your opponent's creatures or to the opponent directly. Things get even better though when Ill-Tempered Loner transforms into Howlpack Avenger, as Howlpack Avenger will deal damage to any target equal to the amount of damage that any permanent you control is dealt. Your opponent will never want to attack or block again while this Werewolf is on the battlefield for fear of taking a ton of direct damage.

Mostly-Boros Triggers

We'll finish this week with a deck called Mostly-Boros Triggers. While technically it is a Mardu deck, there's only one card that requires Black mana. However, that card provides an immense benefit when playing this deck.

Isshin, Two Heavens as One
Isshin, Two Heavens as One is the only Mardu card in this deck, and it provides a huge effect when it is in play. While Isshin is on the battlefield, any abilities that are triggered by attacking with a creature will trigger twice. This will allow you to gain extra +1/+1 counters if Hopeful Initiate attacks alongside another creature with a higher power. Thundering Raiju will also provide you with extra +1/+1 counters. Adeline, Resplendent Cathar and Squee, Dubious Monarch will both create multiple creature tokens when they attack, filling up your battlefield, allowing you to go wide.

In addition to all the triggers, this deck offers some good removal as well. When Kumano Faces Kakkazan transforms into Etching of Kumano, you'll be able to exile your opponent's creatures whenever they would die as a result of damage from a source you control. Chump blocking will become more dangerous for your opponent once there is no way to return a creature to the battlefield from their graveyard. Lightning Strike can deal three points of damage to any target, destroying a creature or taking out the last few points of your opponent's life total. Finally, Destroy Evil can take out a tanky creature your opponent has in play, or it can be used to take out an annoying enchantment your opponent has in play.

Wrapping Up

As you can see, there are multiple routes to victory with Boros decks. You can create a horde of creature tokens to crush your opponent with, or copy numerous spells for devastating effect. Whichever you choose, you're likely to find a deck that you'll enjoy playing.
