Moral León is the Modern Master in D.C.

Reddit

This weekend 400 of the world's best Magicians gathered in Washington, D.C. to battle for supremacy in Modern and Fate Reforged Limited. There were a ton of very interesting stories at this Pro Tour. Jon Finkel put up a tenth place finish, with Sam Black, Yuuki Ichikawa, David Ochoa, and Andrew Cuneo also putting up Top 25 finishes. But when the dust settled, only eight players can step onto the Sunday stage. Eric Froehlich in his fourth Pro Tour Top 8. Lee Shi Tian in his third consecutive Top 8 of a Modern Pro Tour in as many tries. Hall of Famer Jelger Wiegersma; three-time Grand Prix Champion Seth Manfield; Jacob Wilson in his second consecutive Modern Pro Tour Top 8; Jesse Hamptom in his second Pro Tour Top 8. The Top 8 is rounded out by newcomers Antonio Del Moral León and Justin Cohen.

In the first round, we saw the triumph of the combo decks. Justin Cohen with Amulet Bloom defeats Seth Manfield with Burn. Jesse Hampton defeats Eric Froehlich in the Abzan mirror. Antonio Del Moral León with Splinter Twin defeats Jacob Wilson with Abzan. Jelger Wiegersma defeats Lee Shi Tian with Burn.

In the semifinals, Justin Cohen edged out Jesse Hampton using the transformational sideboard plan he developed with roommate Sam Black while Antion Del Moral León defeated Jelger Wiegersma in a blazingly fast Splinter Twin mirror.

In the finals, Cohen took a quick game one in just four turns off of double Amulet of Vigor. Antonio battled back in the next game with a Blood Moon backed by the Splinter Twin combo. The games that followed featured tight games where Cohen came dangerously close to getting out of hand, but Moral León was able to use Deceiver Exarch, counterspells, and Vendilion Clique to contain the opposing combo deck and take the title.

Congratulations to Antonion Del Moral León, champion of Pro Tour Fate Reforged.
