Hello Everyone! It's MTGBert bringing you another Legendary Creature Spotlight, a segment where I give you a Legendary creature to focus on in the commander format! The star of the show this time is going to be Lumra, Bellow of the Woods. This Titan of a creature comes to us from the wonderful plane of Bloomburrow. Here I will go over the card's strengths and synergies so you can have an idea of what to focus on when brewing the deck. I will also have my personal decklist at the end so be sure to check it out. Let's get started!
The Star
Lumra, Bellow of the Woods is a 6 mana Elemental Bear with power and toughness equal to the number of lands that we control. That's not the end of this card's power though as it also has Vigilance and Reach which makes for one heck of an attacker or blocker. As if that weren't enough, there is a final line of text that is just the icing on the cake. When Lumra Enters, we mill four cards. After that we return all land cards from our graveyard tapped. Giving us a reward for putting lands in our graveyards.
That's a lot of explaining so let's break it down a big more. Lumra will have high power due to the sheer number of lands that we are playing, is a powerhouse of an Attack and Blocker, and can do a great impression of a Splendid Reclamation. So, with our power aspects identified, it's time to go over some general synergies that will make the bear a true beast of the forest.
Synergies
As always since we have gone over what the card does, let's get into other cards that synergize and amplify the Commander's qualities. I will go over cards suite by suite, starting with the self mill and Land sacrificing package. Circle of the Land Druid is a bit on the weaker side for the deck but cost effective plays like this are exactly the thing that we want. Milling cards and sacrificing lands early so that Lumra can bring them back to our battlefield is a strategy that we can employ so that later we will be able to cast our commander multiple times in a turn. Other cards in this section are cards such as Satyr Wayfinder, Six, Titania, Nature's Force, Harrow, Entish Restoration, and Roiling Regrowth all provide us with means to put lands into our graveyard. After our mill and sacrifice package we have a Landfall package. These are cards that allow us to prosper when we get our lands back from the graveyard onto the battlefield. The premiere card in this suite is going to be Nissa, Resurgent Animist. This card does an immaculate Lotus Cobra impression as well as being a source of card advantage if we hit two lands per turn. Getting one of our ten other Elementals or Elves gives this card considerable flexibility for our deck. The big boss of landfall Avenger of Zendikar does a great job of making a board for us while empowering that board when we drop lands onto the battlefield. Tireless Provisioner, Tireless Tracker and Zendikar's Roil each provide benefits when lands enter the battlefield. This combines well with our commander's trigger and the self mill strategy. To further empower the landfall strategy, I have included a multitude of additional land drop effects. This helps to ramp into the commander or ramp into our powerful spells that will make our commander a dynamo.
Lastly let's go over cards that are just generally synergistic for our deck. Last March of the Ents scales with our commander's Toughness and will provide us with an ample amount of value as we try to overwhelm our opponents boards. Next is Genesis Wave, This card will propel the game forward by increasing the amount of permanents available. Having only 12 combined Non-Genesis Wave instants and sorceries the frequency of hits from this card will be astronomical. A powerful card that I am trying for the first time is going to be Rise of the Eldrazi. This card has some powerful effects but the one that is most exciting is the extra turn giving another chance to get through with Lumra. An assortment of cards that are good with Lumra are cards that enable the Trample keyword. Shadowspear, Garruk's Uprising, Nissa, Ascended Animist's Ultimate and the pseudo trample that Invasion of Ikoria // Zilortha, Apex of Ikoria provides ensure that we would be able to get damage through to our opponents.
Those are some cards that will ensure that Lumra can not only function but prosper in the battlefield. Each card is structured in a way to provide the deck with more options to take the game. With the synergies listed I will provide you with a deck list that I have built for my personal collection.
