Aaron Lewis and Scott Markeson Are Pocket Aces at the Grand Prix Las Vegas

Reddit

Modern Masters 2015 Weekend is over. Grand Prix Las Vegas, so large it was split into two Grand Prix with 3,687 in the first and 3,864 players in the second. Two tournaments means two Top 8s and therefore two champions.

Grand Prix Las Vegas the first featured some incredible drama down the stretch with Hall of Famer Luis Scott-Vargas attempting to make the elimination rounds despite picking up two losses. His Green-White Tokens deck got him the wins he needed, but the tie-breaker math was not in his favor. Instead the Top 8 featured another Hall of Famer in Ben Stark and a Grand Prix grinder in Pascal Maynard. Maynard made waves when in pack two he faced a tough dilemma - take Burst Lightning, perfect for his Red-White Double Strike deck or take a foil Tarmogoyf. Maynard took the mythic rare and managed to make his way to the semifinals.

The finals were an all Wisconsin affair with Aaron Lewis on Blue-White Artifacts and Lucas Duchow on Black-Red Elementals. It was a quick two games with Aaron Lewis, having dispatched Ben Stark in the quarterfinals, took home the trophy.

Congratulations to Aaron Lewis, one of your Grand Prix Las Vegas champions!

The other Grand Prix Las Vegas Top 8 had its own Pro Tour pedigree. Pro Tour Born of the Gods Shaun McLaren champion and Pro Tour Return to Ravnica Top 8 competitor Pedro Carvalho managed to claw their way to the top of the heap. Both, however, found themselves eliminated in the quarterfinals.

The championship match was a decided Blue-White affair with both Scott Markeson and David Heineman piloting Blue-White Artifact decks. Markeson's machine fired on all cylinders in game one but Heineman battled back in game two on the back of an army of Spirits from Spectral Procession. Game three, however, was all about Markeson who leaned on Lodestone Myr, Cranial Plating, and a metallic army to press his advantage to victory.

Congratulations to Scott Markeson , one of your Grand Prix Las Vegas champions!
