He dropped one match all weekend on his way to the title of World Champion. It was in round four.
Seth Manfield absolutely dominated the 2015 World Championship. Picking up his only loss in Modern, Manfield, a three time Grand Prix Champion, can now add another impressive trophy to his mantle.
Besting the 11-1 Swiss performance by Shota Yasooka in 2012, Seth Manfield went into the finals as the top seed. He took apart Sam Black and Mono-White Devotion in four games. Mastery of the Unseen could draw the game out, but Manfield's Abzan control had the answers - the hallmark of Abzan for the past year.
His opponent in the finals was Owen Turtenwald. Turtenwald, no stranger to the Sunday stage, had to go through Hall of Famer Paul Rietzl in the semi-finals. In an Abzan mirror - Turtenwald's Control against Rietzl's Hangarback Walker build it was the Control deck that took the match in four games.
The finals, fittingly, was a five game Abzan Control mirror. Abzan was the deck that has defined the past year of Standard and it only makes sense that the title of World Champion should be bestowed upon one who outlasts all others. The games were a back and forth affair. The fifth game was especially tense as Owen started on a mulligan but clawed his way back into the game. It did not matter as Manfield kept the threats and answers flowing to keep his date with destiny.
Congratulations to Seth Manfield, your 2015 Magic World Champion!

The 2015 World Championships showcased the importance of teams in modern professional Magic. Brian David-Marshall discusses the preparation of different teams for this event and how they transcended traditional loyalties. Two current members of Team Ultra-Pro made it to Sunday and fully 75% of the Top 4 were current or former members of Channel Fireball: Pantheon. Seth Manfield is a member of Team Luxe which put Ari Lax into the winner's circle at Pro Tour Khans of Tarkir.
