With Pro Tour Battle for Zendikar a week away in Milwaukee, the professional Magic community descended on Grand Prix Madison in order to prepare for the new limited environment. They were some of the 1,820 players taking on the roles of Eldrazi and Zendikari.
Down the stretch multiple pro players were in the hunt for a Top 8 berth. When the dust settled the elimination rounds featured Hall of Famers Raphael Levy and Paul Rietzl, Magic Online Champion Magnus Lantto, Pro Tour Theros Champion Jérémy Dezani and pro player Samuel Pardee.
The finals saw Lantto's Blue-Red deck taking on Levy and his White-Green splash Red special. It was Eldrazi against Zendikari, mimicking the conceit of the set. In game one Lantto's deck did work, whittling the veteran Levy down to the final few life points before the Hall of Famer stabilized. After finding the correct land, Levy was able to cast Resolute Blademaster and Tajuru Beastcaller a claim victory.
Game two had Levy stick the first big blow with a turn four 5/5 Woodland Wanderer. Lantto was able to set up his defenses and stemmed the bleeding while Levy struggled to find lands. Magnus resolved a Valakut Invoker that was poised to take out Levy's board. Raph was unfazed, casting Infuse with the Elements on Shadow Glider to secure his fifth Grand Prix victory in his amazing 20th Top 8.
