Bloomburrow brought a breath of fresh air to Magic. The art is fantastic and many of the new card designs really pack a punch. Bloomburrow has exciting cards in every slot including common. Here are the top 10 commons from Bloomburrow that you should consider adding to your Commander decks!
#10. Kindlespark Duo
Kindlespark Duo is our first card to start off the list. It falls very short when it comes to spellslinger pinger cards. Thermo-Alchemist is going to be a better option for multiplayer almost all of the time. However, Kindlespark Duo does trigger on noncreature spells. Artifacts, enchantments, instants, and sorceries all fall under the category of noncreature spells. There are some artifact decks that I am sure would love to play this, especially ones that are casting many zero to one mana artifacts in a single turn.
#9. Cache Grab
Cache Grab can be an excellent piece of card selection, especially in squirrel decks. Chatterfang, Squirrel General is still holding as the top squirrel commander of all time. This seems like an automatic inclusion. Looking at the top couple cards, grabbing a permanent, and then the chance to make a free food token is pretty decent for two mana. Commanders that care about playing cards out of the graveyard might also be interested in this card as it is almost like a second copy of Grisly Salvage in your library.
#8. Crumb and Get It
Combat tricks have to be some of my favorite spells of all time. Crumb and Get It fills a similar role as Loran's Escape in a way of protecting your Commander, but has the added bonus of adding the buff. I like the flexibility of being able to use this as just a piece of protection or as a way to deal just a bit more damage. I can recall a number of games putting my opponent to twenty Commander damage and just needing that slight nudge to take them out. Feather, the Redeemed will love this new inclusion.
#7. Lifecreed Duo
Life gain strategies have been around for an age. Lifecreed Duo gives us a fresh option to choose from. Impassioned Orator is probably obsolete at this point since this new card gives us evasion. The flying ability also might just be helpful as a blocker. I am not sure how much play this card will see as we have so many options for this type of effect, but having a ton of consistency in Commander is never a bad thing. Having the type of bat and bird might give those creature types a boost as their card pool continues to grow.
#6. Fountainport Bell
I know what you're thinking. Traveler's Amulet sees just about zero play so why should this be any different? It all boils down to the text: draw a card. Fountainport Bell also can get us a basic land to the top of our library for the low cost of only one mana. This is great for colorfixing or just making sure we hit our land drops every turn. It also has the added bonus of being able to draw us a card. We could draw a card the turn we play the bell if we need a land turn three. At common rarity on a colorless card, this does a great job of making sure we get what lands we need when we need them.
#5. Carrot Cake
Token decks don't need any more toys. They get such an influx of good Commander options to lead the strategy as well as cards for the 99 constantly. Carrot Cake is just another good low to the ground card that can make us tokens. Having the upside of giving us a scry and some life is a nice bonus when in white. I think this card would be great in an aristocratic strategy in Orzhov. Having a commander that cares about creatures and artifacts dying would get a lot of use out of Carrot Cake. A card like Deadly Dispute is going to love eating Carrot Cake as you get to scry 1 before you draw two of the dispute. This card can fit into at least two different strategies if not more. Even though it does give more support to token decks, it does spread a little bit of the love, especially to aristocrats.
#4. Longstalk Brawl
Green in Magic has really gained a lot of fight spells in the last year or two. The new Bridgeworks Battle is amazing since it is on a land. Bushwhack and Tail Swipe are also only one mana for a fight spell. Longstalk Brawl is a new one mana fight spell to enter the arena. For the low cost of gifting someone a tapped fish, you can give your creature a permanent +1/+1 counter before the fight takes place. We have yet to see this on a one mana fight spell. Tail Swipe only gives a temporary buff if you cast it in your Main Phase. The only downside to the new Longstalk Brawl is that it is a Sorcery, but since it is only one mana I think we can overlook that. One mana to remove a creature that you can win in a fight with is a low price to pay.
#3. War Squeak
Voltron is my favorite strategy in Commander so my number three pick might be a little biased. War Squeak is a one mana aura that gives the enchanted creature +1/+1 and Haste. When War Squeak enters it also makes a creature unable to block. This can be huge if you do not have any evasion on your creature. This aura also having the ability to give your creature haste can lead to you knocking out an opponent out of nowhere. Play a huge threat like Hellkite Tyrant and give it haste for just one mana and make your opponents flying blocker unable to stop it in combat. Commanders like Wyleth, Soul of Steel can't get enough of these cheap auras that give you a buff and another effect on top of it.
#2. Sazacap's Brew
Sazacap's Brew might just be the best Red cantrip we have seen in a long time. Thrill of Possibility and Cathartic Reunion step aside. Sazacap's Brew allows us to pitch a card to draw two cards. That's not super exciting, but it has one more thing it can do. If we gift one of our opponents a fish, we can give one of our creatures +2/+0 until the end of turn. This is huge. We can use this reactively in combat to kill something attacking us at instant speed. This could also be the last bit of damage we need to knock out a player from the game. Zada, Hedron Grinder is going to go absolutely crazy with this card. Even if we do not want the buff it is still a Thrill of Possibility with the added bonus of giving us the boost if we want it. This card is going to be a new staple, I believe, in most Red decks.
#1. Diresight
The last card we covered was a new staple for red. This card is going to be a huge new staple in Black. Diresight is extremely similar to the ever popular Read the Bones. The only difference between these two sorceries is Diresight has surveil instead of scry. Is that a big enough deal to take out Read the Bones out of all your Black decks in exchange? Yes! Absolutely! There are so many Commanders in Black that care about the number of cards in your graveyard. Almost every Black Commander deck plays Reanimate or a card similar to it. Putting cards into your graveyard instead of the bottom of your library is a huge difference. This card is going to be a new staple for Black in Commander most definitely and that is why it earns the number one spot on this list.
That does it for the top 10 commons from Bloomburrow for Commander. Even though common cards aren't as exciting as the more powerful rares and mythics, some of them can outshine those rarities in the right deck. I hope this list inspires you to take more time looking at bulk Magic cards to find the hidden spice.
See you on the battlefield!
