Foundations has officially been spoiled and it's coming out soon! It is time to start making room for a whole new shipment of cardboard because let's be honest you are definitely going to be picking up some Foundations. Before you box up all of that Duskmourn draft bulk, look for some of these Uncommons and set them aside for your next Commander brew. Some of these could even be brand new staples for the format entirely!
Number Ten
You might be surprised that a removal spell is at the bottom of my list. Unwanted Remake is a new one mana instant speed removal piece in White. Swords to Plowshares and Path to Exile are still the best spot removal in the game. This will never replace those pieces of removal so you would already be playing Swords and Path. I think having three pieces of removal in just White means you are playing Mono-White. I believe this is really the only place this card belongs. Unwanted Remake is still a great rate for removal, outclassed only by its predecessors.
Number Nine
Arabella, Abandoned Doll could be your Commander or a great piece in the 99. Or is it...? Arabella is a little bit of a trap in most token strategies, but an all star in others. Most token decks try to boost their army with anthem effects or attempt to win with Overwhelm effects. If their power becomes greater than two, Arabella does not trigger. If you are playing a deck where Overwhelm effects are few and far between, like in Boros colors for example, Arabella can be a finisher for you. Just be mindful of your token's power when wanting to include Araballa in your token deck.
Number Eight
Scrabbling Skullcrab is a new way to mill out your opponents or help add some cards to your graveyard. For each enchantment you have enter, you can have someone mill two cards. Master of Keys, a Commander we got out of this set, is the perfect Commander for this card. Graveyard decks that play a lot of enchantment creatures, or enchantments in general, will want to include this card from now on. This also can be a way to whittle down your opponents libraries in a Blue enchantment deck focusing on milling out your opponents.
Number Seven
Shardmage's Rescue is a piece of protection in white. Voltron style Commanders will find this card especially useful. Lightning Greaves is a card that most Voltron Commanders can't play since you need to be able to target your own Commander. Running effects like Shardmage's Rescue help keep your Commander alive while also boosting their power to win the game. Bonus points if you can draw a card off a Sram type effect.
Number Six
Cynical Loner is an Entomb on a stick! Entomb is a staple tutor of the format for just about every reanimator deck on the planet. Cynical Loner is now an extra copy of that card in your deck that you can also Reanimate. Vile Entomber and Oriq Loremage have a similar effect, however, Cynical Loner is half the mana cost! A repeatable tutor at uncommon is definitely something throwing in a binder and out of your bulk!
Number Five
Green is constantly getting creatures that are Naturalize on a body. Today we are looking at Insidious Fungus. Cankerbloom is very similar to this new fungus. Cankerbloom could destroy an artifact or enchantment or could proliferate. Insidious Fungus trades out the proliferate for a Growth Spiral instead. Insidious Fungus gets to go into just about every landfall deck you can think of. Revealed removal shapes the way your opponents play their turns. If you decide there is nothing that great to remove at the moment, you can turn it into a card and potentially even ramp. For one Green mana this card has all upside.
Number Four
Red is a very explosive color in Commander. It really only struggles in that it can't interact well against countermagic. Over recent years, we have been seeing more support in redirect effects. Untimely Malfunction is a redirect that is modal. Redirecting a Counterspell or removal spell for 2 mana is not a bad rate, however, Bolt Bend and Deflecting Swat are slightly better. Untimely Malfunction does have the added bonus of being able to destroy an artifact or disrupt up to two blockers in combat. Having that versatility is all what Commander is about. Sometimes there's a pesky artifact holding you back on your opponent's board or you are one creature short of getting in for lethal. This card solves those issues as well as being a redirect. This is probably one of the best red cards from the set, even at uncommon!
Number Three
Coordinated Clobbering is a brand new creature removal spell in Green. Green is well known for having lots of fight effects to help remove your opponent's creatures. Fight spells are great, but they can also kill your own creature. Coordinated Clobbering has no threat of losing your creature. This is most likely one of the best 1 mana ways in green to remove a creature. Unfortunately, it is at sorcery speed, but with all of the upside it has it is still worth testing out in the 99.
Number Two
Who here loves ward three? Anyone? Ward is the mechanic that replaced hexproof and is hated just as much by most players. Tivit, Seller of Secrets and Voja, Jaws of the Conclave are really popular Commanders that just so happen to have ward three. This keyword makes them really hard to remove off the board. Nowhere to Run is here to help remove that pesky keyword. For just 2 mana you remove hexproof and ward from all your opponents' creatures. This enchantment also enters and gives a creature -3/-3 at flash speed. That debuff could be enough to remove a small creature or be used as a black combat trick. Nowhere to Run is one of the first ways to remove ward as a keyword and is a welcomed addition to the game.
Number One
The final card on the list is none other than Sheltered by Ghosts. Sheltered by Ghosts is a type of Oblivion Ring effect that also can help protect one of your creatures on board. It is an aura that enters and exiles any nonland permanent your opponents control under it. The aura also grants your creature +1/+0, lifelink, and ward two. This card is a brand new staple for all Voltron Commanders in White, Enchantment focused strategies, and any White deck that is Commander focused. Removing a threat and boosting your own board is how you get ahead of your opponents. Sheltered by Ghosts is clearly the best uncommon from Duskmourn.
That wraps it up for the best uncommons. Hopefully this list can be of use to you as you sort through all that Duskmourn bulk. Removal was heavily represented in the top uncommon cards. Make sure you test some of these out and maybe take out those Doom Blades for something fresh.
See you on the Battlefield!
