Foundations is the latest expansion added to Magic. This set has brought a ton of brand new cards. Most of this set is designed to reset Standard, however, there are quite a few powerful cards for Commander hiding within. There are even cards at common rarity that are powerful enough to leak over into the Commander format. Here are the top cards from Foundations for Commander at common level.
Number Eight
Starting off with an absolute powerhouse of a common, Cackling Prowler. This is at the bottom of the list because we are thinking about Commander. If we were looking at something like Pauper this would be almost number one. A four-mana 4/3 with ward 2 that can gain counters each turn is very powerful for such a low cost. This is a great inclusion for Commanders that care about creatures dying, but fail to have either massive beaters or decent blockers. In an aristocrat strategy in Green this seems like a no brainer if you are trying to cut down on the overall cost of your deck.
Number Seven
Dazzling Angel is a new soul sister we received that also happens to be in a very supported creature type. Lifegain is constantly getting new toys in the common and uncommon slot. Dazzling Angel shines a little brighter since it flies for one and is an angel for two. Righteous Valkyrie and Archangel of Thune are two angels that care about gaining life. Dazzling Angel pairs quite well in a White angel deck where both of those cards are already in the 99. Giada, Font of Hope just received a reprint in this set. Now you have the perfect Commander for all of these lifegain angels!
Number Six
Bigfin Bouncer is an Unsummon on an enters the battlefield trigger. We do see this effect quite a bit in Blue with cards like Man-'o-War and Aether Channeler. Bigfin doesn't stand out too much against these other options other than it is another copy you can be running in your flicker strategies. It also is a pirate. This creature type has gained a lot of popularity after Lost Caverns of Ixilan came out. At common level, this card is a great inclusion for a budget Brago, King Eternal deck or something similar.
Number Five
Speaking of pirates, here is another great common card. Gutless Plunderer is a three-mana 2/2 with deathtouch that gives us some card selection when it enters the battlefield. Deathtouch is always a great keyword to have on a blocker as it makes combat tricky for your opponents. Gutless Plunderer also gets to look at the top couple cards as long as we attack the turn when it comes into play. This card also puts a few cards into your graveyard if you are doing some Reanimate shenanigans.
Number Four
Sacrifice outlets are always a welcome addition to the card pool for Commander. Hungry Ghoul is a new take on Carrion Feeder. Hungry Ghoul is only 2 mana and grows over the course of the game as you feed it fodder. You do need to pay one colorless mana each time you sacrifice a creature to it. Free sacrifice outlets can be expensive to acquire if you are on a tight budget, especially ones like Ashnod's Altar and Phyrexian Altar. Hungry Ghoul is a great value card at common level that can be used effectively in an aristocrat strategy.
Number Three
Lifegain is constantly getting new toys at common and uncommon level. I feel like I am having deja vu. Hinterland Sanctifier is a brand new soul sister in common. These one-mana creatures that gain you life over the course of the game is the perfect turn one play for just about every lifegain deck ever. Consistency is the key to Commander. Hinterland Sanctifier makes the soul sister list of options a little more full.
Number Two
Crackling Cyclops is my personal favorite card out of this set. This card is extremely close to Kiln Fiend, a Pauper all star, but is just a bit different. Each noncreature spell you cast will increase Crackling Cyclops's power by +3. That is a huge boost! There are so many zero mana artifacts, rituals, and cantrips running around a game of Commander that you can turn this guy into a wrecking ball. Just wait until Veyran, Voice of Duality gets her hands on this guy.
Number One
Hare Apparent is one of the best common cards we received out of the entire year! It can create a massive army of rabbits and you can play as many of them in your deck as you want. Rat Colony and Pitiless Petitioners can step aside, this may be the best out of these types of cards. Hare Apparent creates the rabbit tokens on an enter the battlefield ability. We can play this in a flicker strategy and create an army in no time. Red also would be a great color to pair with this card since Red gives us access to Impact Tremors and similar effects. Not to mention, White has a lot of token doublers and triplers! Hare Apparent, no contest, is the best common from Foundations.
There's the list of the top commons to look out for when sorting through your bulk from Foundations. Especially look out for Hare Apparent! That card is worth some serious monetary value! I hope Commander players can enjoy this set just as much as Standard players and enjoy tinkering with all these new commons!
See you on the battlefield!
