Top Common Cards for Commander from 2024

Reddit

2024 was the year of Commander. We received so many new legendary creatures as well as a handful of cards for each and every strategy out there. There were even a number of cards printed at Common level that stand out this year. Here are the top 10 common cards for Commander we received this year.

#10. Demand Answers

Demand Answers

The first card to start things off is a piece of red card draw. Demand Answers is a two-mana instant speed way to draw two cards with the added cost of sacrificing an artifact or discarding a card. Red has no limit to the amount of variants they will print of two mana card draw. Thrill of Possibility was the original version of this card, but now you can also sacrifice an artifact instead of discarding a card. Treasures, Clues, Foods, and Blood Tokens can all be sacrificed to this to draw some new cards. A great inclusion for an artifact strategy.

#9. Grab the Prize

Grab the Prize

Speaking of more two-mana Red card draw pieces, here is Grab the Prize. This version is unique in that it can deal damage to our opponents if you discard a nonland. A lot of Red Commanders benefit from your opponents losing life, such as Neheb, the Eternal. The downside is that this spell is a sorcery, whereas Demand Answers is an instant. I believe the damage this card deals can be very synergistic to red burn strategies. Synergistic cards for Commander are better than just good generic cards. That is why this card is ranked better than Demand Answers, even though you could play either.

#8. Highway Robbery

Highway Robbery

This certainly has been the year for two mana red card draw effects. Highway Robbery is another one! Highway Robbery draws two at sorcery speed for the added cost of discarding a card or sacrificing a land. The upside to this version of these effects is that it has a plot for two mana. This simply means that you can cast it on a later turn for free. Highway Robbery would be suited best for a Gruul landfall strategy since a lot of Green cards allow you to play lands out of your graveyard. Being cast out of exile is also a very popular sub theme right now, especially with cards like Passionate Archaeologist.

#7. Thraben Charm

Thraben Charm

Finally, the first non-Red card of the line up. Thraben Charm is a model White instant that can be very flexible. This spell can remove creatures, remove enchantments, and exile graveyards. For only two mana this is a great inclusion for mono White decks, especially for the graveyard hate. I believe every Commander deck should run at least one piece of graveyard hate in case of a matchup with a reanimator strategy. This card can be that one card in your deck, as well as being a removal spell for a creature or enchantment.

#6. Molten Gatekeeper

Molten Gatekeeper

Molten Gatekeeper is an Impact Tremors on a body. This effect is always needed for token decks, such as Krenko, Mob Boss. The more creatures that enter under your control the better. Molten Gatekeeper even has unearth for just one red mana! Unearthing this creature can be used as one last push in order to take out your opponents. Also this is great playing against a mill strategy where they are filling your graveyard with cards from your deck. Impact Tremors is a card that is played a ton in Commander. This is the same thing with a little bit of flexibility for just one mana more to cast!

#5. Pick Your Poison

Pick Your Poison

Pick Your Poison is my favorite removal spell of the year and it's a common! For only one Green mana you can choose to either have each opponent sacrifice an artifact, an enchantment, or a creature with flying. Since this card is only one mana, you can play it during the early stages of the game. If you go last in turn order this is the perfect way to knock out all of your opponent's turn one artifact ramp in one sweep. Enchantments are the hardest permanent type to remove and most decks on average only play around 5-7. With this mind we know that most opponents will only have one enchantment in play at a time. Pick Your Poison can knock out all of them with just one single mana. This also deals with flyers as well! This card is extremely powerful at any stage in the game and even if it feels like a dead card, it is only one mana.

#4. Accursed Marauder

Accursed Marauder

Accursed Marauder is a new Fleshbag Marauder that takes the front stage. For only two mana you make each player sacrifice a non token creature. If you are the caster of Accursed Marauder you simply sacrifice it to itself while everyone else has to choose what to get rid of. Similar to Pick Your Poison, you can cast this on turn two to knock out everyone's set up creatures or mana dorks. Unearth pairs nicely with this card to return it to play or if you don't have Accursed Marauder in your graveyard yet you can simply cycle Unearth away. Accursed Marauder is a new staple in just about every deck that cares about creatures dying in Black.

#3. Hare Apparent

Hare Apparent

Hare Apparent is the new Rat Colony we received this year. This rabbit is extremely powerful if you build your Commander around it. Arabella, Abandoned Doll, seems like the perfect Commander to run these rabbits in the 99. Once you get some token doublers into play like Anointed Procession you are making a crazy number of rabbit tokens. Hare Apparent is quite possibly the strongest of the cards you can run any number of in your Commander Deck. You need to build your deck around it heavily to make it work. The top two cards on the list are ones that are brand new staples that every Commander player can use moving forward.

#2. Modern Horizons 3 Landscape Fetches

Bountiful Landscape

The Landscape Fetch cycle from Modern Horizons 3 takes the number two spot on the list. There is a land for every three-color combinations for Commander. Landscapes can fetch for one of the three basic types it names and can be cycled away if you do not need it. Color Fixing can be a daunting task when it comes to crafting your own Commander deck. Lands can also be very expensive since every deck needs them. These lands are budget options for three or more color Commander decks that make sure you get the colors you need to play the game effectively.

#1. Glimpse the Impossible

Glimpse the Impossible

Glimpse the Impossible is the best common card out of 2024 and here's why. Glimpse the Impossible exiles the top three cards of your library and you can play them this turn. Three mana is all you need to cast this, meaning you are only paying one mana each per card. At the end of turn you return all exiled cards to our graveyard and create an Eldrazi Scion token for each card put there this way.

Wrenn's Resolve is a similar type of effect, however, you can get burned if you exile powerful cards out of your libraries. Glimpse the Impossible puts those cards back into your graveyard so you have the option to recur them if we have those types of effects. you can also play this card on turn three to just create three scions that sacrifice for one colorless mana each. That means if you play land on turn four, you will have 7 mana available to you! This amount of mana early in the game can let you cast a huge explosive spell to set you ahead of the table. All of these reasons are why I believe this is the best common card for Commander out of 2024.

That wraps up the common card list for 2024. I hope you enjoyed the sets we received this year and don't forget to check your bulk for these amazing new cards for our format. Looking forward to all the new commons to go through in 2025. Until next time!

See you on the battlefield!
