It hasn't been all that long since our last few preview seasons have passed us by, but it is time to discuss the cool new cards of Bloomburrow! This set has been hotly anticipated ever since it was first revealed last year that we'd see a release centered around a bunch of cute anthropomorphic animals in the vein of Redwall. Now that the cards are getting shown off, players can't get enough of it! With week one of previews in the books, let's recap some of the cool elements of the preview season thus far!
The Cards People Are Talking About
Normally here I'd be highlighting specific cards, but this time people are talking about, er, everything! There's so many cool and adorable things going on with Bloomburrow that have people talking. This ranges from the story and characters to the animalfolk on the plane, and even extends to the very mechanics of the cards themselves!
Offspring immediately drew a lot of "awwws" from players everywhere. Not only does it let you cast a creature, but it allows you to get a mini-copy of them too. The best part is how adorable the tokens look alongside the actual cards!
The Gift mechanic and the latest modal spell variant also drew high praise for how flavorful and adorable they are. Seriously: paw prints as a currency in the spell? That's simply inspired.
I do want to bring up one card in specific that had a bunch of people talking: Ygra, Eater of All. This is because of the potential for combo looping that people learned about once the card was previewed. It was quickly identified that since Ygra turns all other creatures into food, you can easily loop two copies of Cauldron Familiar indefinitely so long as one of them is already in the graveyard. This games on the spot, leading to a lot of people hoping to try it out even in formats like Pioneer.
What's New and Pricey?
Admittedly, there aren't a ton of cards that are coming across as super pricey at this point in time. About the most we're seeing are $10 for copies of Beza, the Bounding Spring and Season of Weaving as far as normal versions of cards go. Beza provides lots of catchup value options while being a respectable body on its own and Season of Weaving showcases a super powerful new modal spell.
The biggest card is actually one we've already seen. Lumra, Bellow of the Woods currently commands a roughly $25 price tag, owing in no small part to being a massive creature in most cases. More importantly is that it also provides you with a Splendid Reclamation effect, pairing well with lots of self-mill strategies and likely synergizing well with Aftermath Analyst that remains in Standard post-rotation. The card also features a special alternate art treatment with art by famed Pokemon illustrator Mitsuhiro Arita if you're lucky to get your hands on a copy.
Notable Reprints
Admittedly for this set so far, there really isn't a whole ton to talk about in terms of reprints! No doubt the setting for Bloomburrow makes it a little bit trickier to reprint some solid cards you might normally expect. We did however get our first glimpse into the new Imagine: Courageous Critters set of cards.
These reprints feature certain classic characters as if they showed up somewhere on Bloomburrow itself. These include all three of the cards shown above, as well as both Chatterfang, Squirrel General and Liliana of the Dark Realms. More will be revealed later on. All of them can be found in Collector Boosters with one of each showing up in a Commander precon. Of the ones shown so far, Tamiyo, Field Researcher is the only one currently confirmed to appear in the decks, though a normal version of Chatterfang is slated to be reprinted also.
