Commander Bans Rock the MTG World

This monday saw an absolute bomb go off in the greater MTG world, resulting in one of the most impactful announcements ever in the game's long history. With this announcement, the Commander Rules Committee released the usual quarterly Banned and Restricted Update. Typically as of late, these have largely resulted in no changes being levied against the format, but this one bore several with four cards being banned.

As of now, each of the following cards is banned in Commander:

While the banning of Nadu took virtually no one by surprise, the remainder of the bannings resulted in tremendous losses to many players. Jeweled Lotus and Mana Crypt being removed from the format completely blindsided many, as there was little to no previous indication that these had a potential for being targeted. Additionally, both cards were some of the most expensive cards available for play in the format, both reaching over $100 in value on the secondary market. Dockside Extortionist was a slightly less unexpected hit, as it had been coming up in public discussions over the past year or so, however this still represented a major financial loss as well, causing further unease amongst players.

This boiled over throughout the course of the week, with debates and reactions continuing to be ongoing. However, some of these reactions have proven downright vitriolic, with many members of the community - including RC and CAG members - noting that it got so bad that death threats were being thrown around. This led to further statements from the RC, including an FAQ document, and even the locking down of select members' social media accounts. In addition to the fallout from this, Command Zone member and CEO Josh Lee Kwai announced his resignation from the Commander Advisory Group on Wednesday.

The discussions surrounding this topic continue to be ongoing, though I'd like to encourage anyone reading this to show a little civility and to not harass the people involved.

Scryfall Adds Gavin Verhey's Unknown Event Cards

This allows players to take a look through and reference these cards, as well as include them in their decklists across various mediums such as Moxfield and Archidekt. Additionally, these include the special Unknown Event Planechase cards that are much harder to come by. Check them out now over on Scryfall!

Decklist of the Week

With the US Pioneer Regional Qualifier coming up in just a week's time, everyone is trying to figure out the latest tech to get ahead of the metagame. In one of the final MTGO Pioneer Challenges before the release of Duskmourn: House of Horror, player gazmon48 won with this interesting Boros Control list. Clearly inspired by the current Boros Token Control list that's prominent in Standard, this list wins by controlling the board while also stalling out explosive starts by way of High Noon. This attempts to fight back against decks like Izzet Phoenix, Rakdos Aggro, and Nykthos Ramp, and is also tech being used in more mainstream lists like Azorius Control for similar reasons.
