Which Legendary Creatures from Doctor Who Should You Build Around?
With the introduction of Doctor Who into the Magic: The Gathering's Multiverse (Universes Beyond) and so many incredible cards flooding the scene, it's hard to determine which cards are actually worth looking at, let alone which Legends are worth building around for your Commander decks. If you are anything like me, a lot of the new Legends might be catching your eye. Well, here are our picks for the best Doctor Who Universes Beyond Legends to build around in Commander!
Madame Vastra and Jenny Flint
First, we have the Temur partner pairing Madame Vastra and Jenny Flint, at and respectively (Because be honest, why would you play one without the other! They synergize so well!) Madame Vastra says she must be blocked if able, and whenever a creature she dealt damage dies this turn, create a Clue or Food Token. Note she does NOT say it has to be combat damage! Jenny Flint says whenever you sacrifice a Food or Clue, she buffs ANOTHER Creature. So, in a deck like this you might want ways to create Food and Clues coupled with free artifact-based sacrifice outlets, and you are looking at a quick growth to Madame Vastra for an even quicker KO.
Me, the Immortal
Next on the list we have Me!? No not me; Me, the Immortal! Our second slot goes to another Temur legend sitting at ; she might remind you of an oldie but a goodie: Skullbriar, the Walking Grave! She says she gets to keep her counters (Any Kind) between public zones. But that's not all! She also generates her own keyword and +1/+1 counters at the beginning of your combat, AND she can be cast from the Graveyard by discarding two cards in addition to other costs. So, she really sticks true to her name as "The Immortal!" It's very easy to slot in cards that grant keyword counters in Temur (the Blue-Green-Red color combo) - You definitely don't want to sleep on this one!
The Cyber-Controller
That's enough of the "Heroes" for now. Let's dive into some of the baddies. Here we have another creature that may remind you of Dimir (Blue-Black) creatures from previous sets. The Cyber-Controller, sitting at , allows you to Mill your opponents and steal the creatures milled this way, but not in the way you might think. They get Converted into Cybermen, which means they are turned face down and are 2/2's under your control. To top it off this creature is a Lord for artifact creatures (which your Cyberman tokens conveniently are) giving them +1/+1 to their power and toughness.
Rassilon, the War President
Following a high ranking Cyberman; we have the President of Gallifrey, Rassilon, the War President. Rassilon brings the return of a long-lost mechanic: Conspire! At , he reads "Noncreature spells you cast from exile have Conspire," and he puts cards into exile at the beginning of your upkeep, letting you play those cards as long as they are in exile. What noncreature spells would you want to copy? Do note this may prove difficult with Colorless spells as they are not considered to have a color for Conspiring purposes.
The Master, Multiplied
Speaking of other folk from Gallifrey, we have The Master, Multiplied sitting at . This incarnation of The Master is a little wild! First off, they have Myriad. A Legend with Myriad? Wait for it... they also read "The Legend rule does not apply to tokens you control" AND "Triggered abilities you control can't cause you to exile or sacrifice creature tokens you control." Yes, this means what you think it means. Those Myriad tokens stick around. This also works well with Encore. This Master's growth is literally Exponential!
The Master, Gallifrey's End
If you thought that incarnation of The Master was silly, wait until you see this one sitting at . Remember Athreos, God of Passage and Athreos, Shroud-Veiled? Well, this Master is a blend of both. Whenever a nontoken artifact creature you control dies, an opponent with the highest life total has a choice: either lose 4 life or you create a token that's a copy of that creature. So, if you lose something you like, who knows? You might just get a new shiny version of it!
The Seventh Doctor
That's enough with the baddies, let's take a look at The Doctors, starting with the seventh incarnation sitting at . The Seventh Doctor is fun because it's a guessing game. When the doctor attacks, you pick a card in your hand and the defending player guesses whether its Mana Value is, "greater or less than the number of artifacts you control." If they guess wrong, you get to cast it for free! If they guess right, you get to investigate. It's a win-win!
The Twelfth Doctor
And for our final commander, check out The Twelfth Doctor. This one lets you do something new with a keyword we've only seen once: Demonstrate. Demonstrate allows you to copy a spell as long as you make another copy to give to one of your opponents. This Doctor lets you Demonstrate ANY Spell you cast from exile so long as it's the first one you cast each turn. This can get very out of control with certain spells that were not designed to be Demonstrated, such as Permanents and cards like Glorious End. And to top it off he gets a +1/+1 counter whenever you copy a spell.
An Honorable Mention: Clara Oswald
I know I haven't mentioned any Companions, but as an honorable mention I would like talk about Clara Oswald. She costs generic mana, and you choose her color before the game starts. You can pair her with ANY Doctor and give the deck ANY Third color you'd like! None of the doctors and only one of the other companions inherently have Black in their color identity, so with Clara you can add a little darkness to any Doctor - and we know there is some angst in them all. Oh, did I mention when a Doctor's ability triggers, Clara adds an additional trigger? She goes great with all of them!
