Greetings, Illumineers! Today, we'll be going over another ink from Archazia's Island, Steel! Steel is best known for strong damage-based removal, item and location destruction, as well as Resist and Bodyguard keywords. I'm a huge fan of some of the releases of this set, and we'll be going over my Top 5 Steel cards to look into from Archazia's Island.
Miss Bianca - Unwavering Agent
Miss Bianca - Unwavering Agent is a 6-cost ink-able character with great stats as a 6-cost, but even better stats as a 4-cost, thanks to her ability "Have A Little Faith". At the time of this article being written, my near and dear Steelsong deck included this day 1 and I can understand why. With all 1,2, and 3-cost slots having the ability to consist of characters with the Ally keyword, you're almost guaranteed to play this with the 2-cost discount. Since it's printed cost is 6, you're also looking at someone that can sing every single song in your deck and possibly stay alive afterward to tell the story. Have no songs? She keeps your opponent's characters in check as well. I love this card, and I hope to see more of it throughout this release.
Aladdin - Research Assistant
Aladdin - Research Assistant is a 4-cost, non-inkable character that works very well into an Ally-based tribal deck. As with any other trading card game, cards that grant free or reduced costs have to be heavily tested. In this case, we have access to any 3-cost Ally based on whatever ink you pair this with. The possibilities are truly endless, so this is prime from exploring with either a combo-based or go-wide style deck.
Mulan - Disguised Soldier
Mulan - Disguised Soldier is a 1-cost inkable character that allows you to filter your deck a little more at any point of the game, which is ideal when trying to dig for solutions. If you're feeling adventurous, then you could play a Ruby/Steel deck using Mulan - Elite Archer using Disguised Soldier as a shift target. In Amber/Steel aggro, you can use her discard effect to put Lilo - Escape Artist in the discard pile to be played at a later point. A well rounded card with a well rounded ability, I'm curious to see if anyone ends up making a solid Ruby/Steel deck with the shift line mentioned above.
Bagheera - Guardian Jaguar
Bagheera - Guardian Jaguar is a 5-cost ink-able character with a really awesome ability that deals 2 damage to each opposing character when it's banished on an opponent's turn. It would be great if the opponent could ignore this but given the fact that it's got Bodyguard, it becomes problematic once you have other threats that are protected thanks to this character. It quests for a solid 2 and has okay stats for a 5-cost. We really don't care too much about the willpower, since we do want to eventually deal the wide area damage with its effect.
Gantu - Experienced Enforcer
Lastly, we have Gantu - Experienced Enforcer. It's nice to see Gantu finally getting the respect he deserves after his appearance in the First Chapter left much to be desired and it's more or less meme-worthy at this point. However, we're looking at the glow up now, and this is definitely that. Disrupting song-based decks with "Close all Channels" forced opponents to have to actually pay ink for their songs can put a wrench in their works. Not only that, but following up with "Don't Get Any Ideas" really puts the opponent in a very tough position to pay more for actions or items at critical points of the game. This is definitely a card to keep an eye on if songs and items run rampant in your local meta.
Here are the top 5 Steel cards I'm keeping an eye out for in Archazia's Island. We haven't included any dual inks yet, so stay tuned for that. Keep an eye out for the rest of the base inks this week as we're building up to a strong start.
