Greetings, Illumineer!
Are you new to trading card games? Perhaps you're a Disney fan looking for another way to enjoy your fandom. Is your favorite TCG also dealing with a Bucky-like problem of its own? Fear not, as we'll go into why you should play Disney Lorcana and how to get into it.
Disney Lorcana is Highly Accessible
Disney Lorcana has been out for just over a year, which means it's still easily accessible to get into. Starting from the first set called The First Chapter, we have a decent pool of cards to work with. Ravensburger has committed to matching the demand, and it seems to have a good handle on it as we're seeing it readily available in both hobby and big box retail stores. Disney Lorcana also has a wide range of products, targeting different segments of customers:
Lorcana Gateway
Gateway is the perfect product for newcomers to the game. It comes with two decks that teach you the game and add cards as it introduces new concepts to ensure you build upon previous foundations. If I were starting Disney Lorcana today, or teaching someone new, I would absolutely start here. CoolStuffInc carries this fantastic product here.
Starter Decks
Each set comes with two starter decks, except The First Chapter, which released with three. These decks follow specific themes, while showcasing new cards from the set. If you were to start here, I would recommend getting a more recent deck to take advantage of having newer cards. From here, you can build upon the deck by buying singles or additional booster packs.
Booster Packs
Lastly, booster packs grant players full access to the whichever set you're buying into. This can be daunting (and expensive!) for new players, so make sure you're buying packs for sets where there are cards you're targeting.
Many Ways To Play
Disney Lorcana supports two-player, multiplayer, and co-op modes that allow you to enjoy the game in many ways.
Two-Player
One of the best, and easiest ways to start playing Disney Lorcana is a two player game. The rules to play this way are included in both the starter decks and Lorcana: Gateway. I recommend doing this a few times before considering the other ways to play.
Multiplayer
One of the less popular, but still wildly fun ways to play Disney Lorcana is a free-for-all multiplayer mode. It's recommended to cap this experience at 4 players so that everyone can remain engaged. Decks will need to be tuned for this experience, as some cards make the experience more fun than others.
Co-op
For the set Ursula's Return, Ravensburger released a new co-op mode, called Illumineer's Quest - Deep Trouble. This allowed Illumineers to team up and challenge Ursula in different levels of difficulty. This was generally well received, and I hope we continue to see similar products
Amazing Prize Pools
From locals all the way up to Disney Lorcana Challenges, Ravensburger has absolutely hit the nail on the head when it comes to giving the community a way to play and engage in competitive play. Starting from local league play, you are able to play at hobby stores to earn prizes, such as high quality pins and promo cards. From there, every set since Into the Inklands has had a Set Championship, where Illumineers can compete for alternate art Enchanted cards and unique playmats unobtainable anywhere else but here. Then, there are the Disney Lorcana Challenges, which are regional competitive events where even more unique prizing is available. These events are so popular that they sell out almost immediately. You are able to attend as a competitor or an attendee, which allows you to control the pace and magnitude in which you're playing. I view attendee events more so like a celebration of the game with other players looking to play in less competitive constructed and sealed events.
Collectability
Disney Lorcana is a highly collectable game that holds a lot of value, compared to other TCGs. Given the nature of the collectability of cards, with the fact of such a strong IP, it kind of makes sense why. Between cold foils and enchanted alternate art cards, up to the Disney Lorcana Challenge prizing, collectors have been maintaining value since the game was released.
Conclusion
Disney Lorcana is in such a good place right now, and there's no better time than to start now. No matter what level of play you're interested in, you will have many options to choose from. Ultimately, just make sure you're having fun.
