A Future in the Clouds
A new era is looming on the horizon. The future of Noria is right in front of you. It's up to you to guide your flourishing trading empire into prosperity. Discover flying islands, buy ships, and build factories. Invest in prestigious projects and secure their success by passing on secret knowledge to politicians. For even above the clouds there is still room for improvement.
Noria is the debut title from Sophia Wagner, the winner of the 2015 Spiel de Jahres fellowship. Explore Wagner's incredible steampunk universe in a game with an innovative "wheel-building" mechanic. 2-4 Players build up their action wheels as they rotate from round to round, providing them with new combinations of actions each round. Plan well, influence the politicians, and progress down the paths of the major projects in order to come out on top in the end! This is Noria!
The Action Wheel
The central mechanic of Noria revolves around the Action Wheel. Each player has their own unique action wheel, made up of three tiers that contain discs corresponding to the different actions players can take. The position of the different ring tiers will determine which actions a player can take on their turn, so careful planning is required to make the most of your limited actions!
Activating Discs
On their turn, a player can activate up to three discs in their Action Wheel. Those three discs must be on different rings, and they must be adjacent to each other. On any given turn, a player may only choose to activate the discs on the half of their Action Wheel connected to their player board, a maximum of six spaces. As the game goes on, players can purchase additional discs to slot into their Action Wheels, and they can also upgrade their existing discs to expand their options and take an additional action in their turn.
Upgrading Discs
Upgraded discs afford players new options when taking actions during their turn. A player may choose to activate one of their upgraded discs for two actions associated with that disc. They can choose to either do the same action twice, or do two different actions once. Even if a player has multiple upgraded discs, they can only choose to activate two actions on one of those upgraded discs, taking no more than 4 actions during their turn.
The Wheel Turns
At the beginning of each round, each player will turn their actions wheels, completely changing up the discs available to them for that turn. Each tier of the wheel rotates one space clockwise, providing you with the discs you are able to choose from for that round. Plan carefully, because failing to take the rotation of the Action Wheel into account can stall your gameplan just long enough to put victory out of reach!
The Path to Progress
In order to win a game of Noria, you'll need to expertly navigate the Action Wheel, taking actions to gain resources and using those resources to forge ahead down the four paths of progress. Manage your resources carefully, influence the politicians that govern each path, and put your long-term planning skills to the test, and you will end up victorious in the end!
