You are in the South American highlands, somewhere between the mountain ranges of Bolivia and Peru, where the altitude of more than 3,000 meters imposes tough demands on the people to utilize the scant vegetation for their needs. The inhabitants thrive by fishing in lake Titicaca, mining ore, breeding alpacas, and trading goods that they produce from these resources.
But the resources are limited and will eventually run out, so you'll need to build new production facilities and find new sources of income, like cacao. Build roads to speed up your development and store goods in your warehouse so that you are able to survive the hard times that are not uncommon in this particular barren region. If you plan cleverly and are flexible enough to adapt yourself to the rough conditions of the Altiplano, you will have the highest yield in the end!
Altiplano is a bag-building/tile drafting game by award-winning Orleans designer Reiner Stockhausen. Players will draw tiles from their bags and assign them to actions that will help them gather more resources and assemble an engine and acquire victory points. At the end of the game, the player who best masters the harsh conditions of the Altiplano and gathers the most victory points is crowned the winner! This is Altiplano!
A Role to Play
In a game of Altiplano, each player will move around the village and use their tiles to gather resources. However, each player is given a unique role at the beginning of the game that can help shape their plan as the game goes on. The seven roles are the Woodcutter, the Fisherman, the Shepherd, the Miner, the Farmer, the Trader, and the Stonemason.
The Woodcutter makes wood production quick and easy. With the influx of wood, building boats and roads becomes a viable strategy. The Fisherman brings in fish like it's nobody's business, providing a steady source of food and another method of acquiring stone. The Shepherd makes focusing on wool and cloth production much more efficient, providing a steady source of income. The Miner gives you easy access to coal, a necessary component for making silver. The Farmer will turn your food into alpacas at an astounding rate. The Trader can turn your excess food into coins and the Stonemason can provide you with stone at the drop of a hat.
Whether you assign them randomly or choose to draft them, each of these roles provides you with a foundation on which to build your strategy.
