Hello awesome multiplayer fans! Wow do I have something special for you today! Today we are looking at the best multiplayer cards ever printed last year for all formats for multiplayer games from Commander to Five Color to Modern multiplayer. Since Commander dominates, that will also dominate today's list. I did not read Stephen's list here before creating my list. Ready for my list?
Honorable Mention #1. (#14. Overall) - Chandra, Hope's Beacon
Let's kick this thing off with this six-drop mythic rare planeswalker in red! This fun thing has 5 loyalty on arrival to the battlefield and then four abilities, one static that lets you copy for free your first instant/sorcery each turn. A free Fork is amazing for those types, and being limited to one per turn still makes her pretty strong. Then you can +2 her on arrival to make two mana and then she's just four total spent and on future turns as ramp for your copied spell like an X spell such as Comet Storm. Then you +1 her to exile five and cast all exiled ones you care about with a two turn window, so she's card advantage in +1 form. Then you can -X her and shoot two targets for X damage and all of her abilities are + so that's likely to be a lot. And you can use her +2 to make mana for casting the turn after her +1. And her -X can keep her alive by killing two potential attackers. She is a powerful planeswalker and my second favorite one for multiplayer printed this year!
Honorable Mention #2. (#13. Overall) - Sunfall
This five-cost sorcery in White is next! It exiles all dorks. Then it makes a free X/X dork equal to the creature count exiled to smash and block and win if you spend two mana. Note exiling - so that answers things like indestructible or hexproof or regeneration. Also note that unlike Farewell, this only works on dorks, so it's less of a feel bad to have your entire table exiled save for planeswalkers and lands. This thing is even showing up in Standard all up and down the block. It's just one more than Wrath of God but you get a stronger answer and a dork.
Honorable Mention #3. (#12. Overall) - Witch-king of Angmar
This legendary for Commander five-drop 5/3 flyer is next! When combat damage is dealt to you anything, they sacrifice one thing per time. So, if they hit you with one thing, it goes, but many just one, barring first or double strike then then would sacrifice twice each combat instead of once. This is a limited No Mercy on a Commander eligible stick. Nasty! Then the Ring tempts you each time. Who would attack into you knowing they'd lose stuff when they attack elsewhere and not do so? No Mercy is one of the most powerful game changing effects ever printed in multiplayer, and even this limited version is amazing. And you can save it from targeted or mass removal or safe from blocking to save you by discard a card and giving it indestructible for the turn. Enjoy!
Honorable Mention #4. (#11 Overall) - Ashiok, Wicked Manipulator
Our final planeswalker and card before the Top Ten hits is this fun five drop mono-Black with 5 loyalty. Like Chandra, they also have four abilities, one static. This time, if you would pay life for an effect, you can exile that many cards from your library instead - that's great in big deck formats like Five Color and Commander with a lot of fuel. Then your +1 will let you exile one and draw one from your library, so card flow. Then their -2 will make two 1/1 tokens with the ability to grow over time as things are exiled on your turn only. Then their -7 will exile a foe's library for your exiled mana value combined. Nasty! That's a strong win-con here, card flow and token maker. This is another Ashiok leads an exile from the library and then do things with it planeswalker, and there that's strong in many brews from milling to self-exiling and casting from exile like Rakdos's Prosper, Tome-Bound and to life loss. Love them loads!
#10. Stroke of Midnight
My top card from Wilds of Eldraine is here at the Ten Spot! As you can see, this instant will destroy anything other than lands at instant speed and leave them a sad underpowered 1/1 instead of 3/3 from Generous Gift and Beast Within also you swap the ability there to take out lands. I prefer this in 20 life formats where the 1/1 matters more and the Generous Gift in Commander, but both typically make the cut in my Commander brews. Note that this destroys not exiles.
#9. Atraxa, Grand Unifier
The Atraxa Part Two that is dominating Standard right now in self-mill and reanimation stuff. This seven-drop 7/7 in all the non-Red colors with four massive keywords - one evasion, one to attack and swing, and then one for double life gain, deathtouch is pretty minor on a 7/7 beater with flying over ground pounders. Then the Angel has an ETB trigger to dig ten and put one of each card type into your hand. If you build right that could easily be 4 or 5 types from sorceries to lands to planeswalkers to enchantments. Also tribal is a type too, by the by. You can refill your hand after resolution. Atraxa is so good at building around many types without one specific call out that you can have loads of different deck builds, and is legendary for Commander and the rare four color leader which are always lovely to see.
#8. Reverse the Polarity
This three-cost Blue instant has one of three options when it revolves like a Charm. First you can counter all spells which will shut down a storm stack, copies and main like Chandra above, or just a Cancel for the same mana. Then you can swap all power and toughness, so kill things like Birds of Paradise or Fog Bank, or to be a brilliant combat trick. It can screw up damage-based removal, like save your 4/3 Commander from dying to a Lightning Bolt effect. Then you can have all dorks unblockable this turn, to alpha strike and net a kill or Commander Damage one out of nowhere on your turn or have your foes kill each other. All of those are brilliant and I love it loads! We are now halfway done!
#7. Korvold, Gleeful Glutton
All of the cards from here to #2 are legendary!Hello Jund fans, wow do I have a fun 4/4 flyer with trample (double evasion) and haste (swing now) and then it's a Commander eligible dork. Then we have this costing a massive eight mana, but only three is in colors, the rest are colorless and are reduced by your permanent type sac count this turn. Max five, so he could be as cheap as three mana with the right set up. Then you have a combat damage trigger to put +1/+1 counters here and draw that many cards equal to your permanent types in your graveyard so in one hit you could draw all of the types you sacrificed plus some and with trample and flying it's hard to stop and with haste you can attack an empty board right now. Love this Commander deck card for that format.
#6. The One Ring
Hitting my final spot before out Top Five is this four-drop colorless artifact! It's indestructible so hard to answer. Then if it ETBed when you cast it (rather than blinking or recursion) you get pro everything for a round of turns in multiplayer. Then in your upkeep you'll lose life equal to the counters here. Then you can tap this for no mana and toss a burden counter and then draw that many cards. Very strong, colorless card flow at a pricey clip. This is pretty strong but is a pricey secondary market acquisition already. Insert sad face here.
#5. Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines
This five-drop mono-White legendary dork has a 4/7 size and then the keyword vigilance to swing and block with that big booty many attacks and survive. Then she has two abilities! Did an ETB trigger happen on your side of the battlefield? Great! Do it again! With her as the leader in colorless and White that's everything from Karmic Guide and Sun Titan to Solemn Simulacrum and Rambunctious Mutt, just in dorks alone, plus Ichor Wellspring, Spine of Ish-Sah in artifacts, Flight of Fancy in auras, etc. Then you shut down your foe's triggers that ETB so she's nasty at shutting down and enabling in one card and legendary or in the 99 she's great.
#4. Chimil, the Inner Sun
Our final artifact in our Top Ten is this six drop that let's your stuff not be countered. Most of these effects only work for partial types like sorcery/instants or dorks or artifact but everything is nasty! Then in your end step each turn you'll get a free uncounterable discover 5 which is better than cascade since you can draw it if it's not timed right and it's always card advantage then so if you top deck Counterspell or Wrath of God you can draw instead. Nasty!
Why isn't this The One Ring? Well, a few reasons. That's only card draw and this replaces itself and casts things for free each turn and thus impacts the battlefield and gives you uncounterable stuff too instead of drawing you cards and you save mana too so you can cast with discover and then save your mana for instants or tap out for two turns of mana usage from your main phase and this in one turn. That's why. Free stuff beats card draw at the kitchen table.
#3. River Song
And then there were three! The most unique Commander eligible legendary dork printed this year is good ol' River Song! This Izzet colored 2/2 three drop has two abilities. First? You draw from the bottom of your library. That's...nasty. A simple Impulse to dig, grab one for your hand the rest on the bottom of your library never to see again becomes a powerhouse. Then her second ability will toss a +1/+1 counter on her and shoot a foe for her power in damage when they search, or scry/surveil their deck. Nastyx2! So, she's a win con attached to a Hate Bear attached to something brand new and unique. I built around her here. Wowzer Bowzer!
#2. Omnath, Locus of All
All of the five Omnath's have been heavily played, this too since there are already 7,817 decks at EDHREC with it as a Commander alone. Any Five Color Commander gets played. This five (usually) cost 4/4 will save your unspent mana as Black. That alone is awesome. Then in your precombat main phase, you can reveal the top card of your library and then if it's three or more colored mana symbols you make that three mana and draw it. Free card draw, mana making to drop your thing right now or later, and mana saving on one dork!!! This is the best legendary Commander eligible dork from 2023! And then there was one, but what is it?
#1. Everybody Lives
Welcome to our highest charting card, instant, White card, spell and card for multiplayer for 2023! This two-cost spell gives all dorks hexproof and indestructible for the turn to stop most interaction. Unlike most interaction shut downs like Heroic Intervention or Teferi's Protection, this works for all players, from your foe's to your team's in Two headed Giant or Emperor. Then players get hexproof, cannot lose life and then cannot win or lose. I love this in response to a resolved Thassa's Oracle or alternate win-con or in response to targeted removal at you or your stuff. It's so great at all of the things that you need and you can save a friend or ally or foe's to make friends too. It's awesome possum!
I hope that you enjoyed my quick look at the Top Cards from 2023 for multiplayer across all formats.
