Foundations has just been released and with it we have received a new slew of legendary creatures, thanks to Jumpstart. One of the legendary creatures, is the first legendary saproling creature we have ever seen! Shroofus Sproutsire is a new and exciting Mono-Green Commander to lead a saproling army to victory. Whenever a saproling creature deals combat damage to an opponent, you make that many saprolings. Shroofus is a saproling, making him a one man army. The goal of this deck is to first make Shroofus huge and get in for damage, then anthem our saproling army up and swing for lethal. Let's dig in!
Growing a Saproling
We need to increase Shroofus's power in order to start making our army. Since Shroofus already has trample, we just need to boost his power.
- Blackblade Reforged and Blanchwood Armor are classic ways to boost power.
- Well Rested will put two counters on our Commander each time he untaps and draws us a card.
- Verdant Embrace increases his power while also making us a saproling token each upkeep.
- Guardian Augmenter and Bear Umbra double as increasing his power and protecting Shroofus.
- Forgotten Ancient is one of the best ways to grow our Commander over the course of the game. Our opponent's have to cast spells and Forgotten Ancient can give our Commander a +1/+1 counter each time they do so.
In Mono-Green, we do not have a ton of ways to increase power permanently. Giant Growth effects are plenty, however we would like to enchant or equip our Commander whenever we can. Some instant speed buffs are strong, so we still play some like:
- Invigorate is essentially a free spell to create some saprolings. The downside this spell has is giving an opponent four life, which we can easily steal back.
- Primal Bellow is an instant speed Blanchwood Armor.
- Might of the Masses and Get a Leg Up are great spells once we have established a boardstate.
- Tyvar's Stand can be used in combat or can be used to protect our Commander.
Instant speed interaction is great once blockers are declared. Once we know which one of our saproling friends will connect for damage, we can cast a spell like Might of the Masses to get a huge flux of saprolings. Now that we hopefully have a huge army ready for battle, we need to boost them up and swing in big.
Mushroom Anthem
Shroofus makes saprolings for each saproling that deals damage. The more damage our saproling creatures deal, the more saproling creatures we create. Once we have a small number of them, we can increase all of their power to make a massive amount of them.
- Patchwork Banner and Heraldic Banner act as early game mana rocks that have the benefit of boosting our saprolings. These mana rocks are playable even in the late game.
- Thunderfoot Baloth will boost our army's power if we control our Commander.
- Sylvan Anthem is a classic anthem effect that will also give us some card selection.
- Tribute to the World Tree and Master Chef will have our saprolings enter with some additional +1/+1 counters.
- Ruxa, Patient Professor is an anthem that also can have our saprolings sneak their damage in. We may lose some saprolings in this exchange, however, we have the ability to double our entire board!
Once we make just a couple of saprolings and can get them in for some damage, we will be running the table. Coat of Arms might be enough to wipe out the entire table if we have enough saprolings. Our game plan is very simple, get out our Commander, boost his power, and then make our saproling army huge. What about if we can't get in with our Commander or he keeps getting removed? Let's touch on some more ways to make saprolings in addition to our Commander
The Mushroom Flow Doesn't Stop
This deck wins by making sure we can keep making saproling tokens. It won't be uncommon for our Commander to get targeted, especially if he is equipped or enchanted. These cards can make saprolings for us:
- Tendershoot Dryad creates a saproling each upkeep.
- Saproling Symbiosis will give us a token for each creature we control.
- Fungal Plots is a piece of graveyard hate that creates some saprolings for us. It also can be a card draw engine if need be.
- Second Harvest doubles our saproling count instantly. This is a great card following up Saproling Symbiosis or a turn rotation with Tendershoot Dryad out.
This deck is full of ways to create our army of saprolings! If you're interested in building Shroofus Sproutsire, here is the list I built. Hopefully it will be helpful as a guide or to generate some new ideas!

See you on the battlefield!
