Hello awesome casual MTG fans! Today I am bringing you my middle article in my Top 40 from OTJ (you can find my first 13 cards here: Top Ten from Outlaws of Thunder Junction | Article by Abe Sargent (coolstuffinc.com)). Then as a reminder, this only includes the OTJ cards, not the Big Score or Commander, we'll look at them later. This includes casual formats like Commander, Highlander, multiplayer generally, Five Color, Pauper/Peasant, Type Four and more! Ready for my 2nd list?
Let's do it to it!
#26. Goldvein Hydra
This Hydra is so good it gives twice! The first time with an X/X size and then three abilities to swing now, in haste, stay untapped to block with a massive beater in vigilance, and smash over chumps for wins with trample. That trio is nasty good. It'll win games. Then this has a death trigger to make its power in tapped Treasures. Note that's not what you paid for X, but the current power, so if it increased with something like Rancor, Loxodon Warhammer or Cathars' Crusade, this will make loads more Treasures too! If someone tries to exile to stop it, just run High Market to sac with a tap. And then Regrowth it with the Treasures made and mana and double its size! See why this is here? I hope so!
#25. Kaervek, the Punisher
This crime-ridden three-drop 3/3 is next! You can convert crimes to exiling and casting a black card from your graveyard and then lose two life. There are no once/turn breaks here. Getting another cast from anything, so long as it's Black, is brilliant. And if he is your Commander, that should be most of your deck anyway, with little issue. Note it'll stay exiled and you cannot later cast it, but that's great from where I am sitting!
#24. Slickshot Show-Off
This two-drop mono-Red plot has a 1/2 body with both evasion in flying and haste, and then a better prowess that double pumps the front to really push the table around. I adore this Bird so much in Spellslinger brews, like Izzet or Jeskai, or with Cantrips or Storm to kill in the red zone as backup. It's awesome, and the plot here works so well with timing it right! Also note that this isn't an instant/sorcery cast, but anything that's not a dork, so this is also great in equipment brews too. It's so good at punching and winning.
#23. Kellan, the Kid
Everyone's favorite Bant Commander from OTJ is this three drop 3/3 flying and with lifelink too for a double life swing. Then when you cast a spell from anywhere other than your hand, you can cast a free permanent from your head to the battlefield for that cost or less. If not? Drop land untapped and ready to be used! Free spells and ramp. All you have to do is cast from exile, the graveyard, your library or the...Command Zone! All of those count! I love it with Adventure to plot.
#22. Smuggler's Surprise
I saw a cool Standard deck with this in it here (Trying Out New Cards From Outlaws of Thunder Junction in Standard | Article by Mike Likes (coolstuffinc.com)) in Jund with Terror of the Peaks. It looked fun! This one drop instant spree is next, and +2 with milling four yourself and then Regrowth'ing two lands/dorks, card flow at instant speed. Or you can +5 and then drop two creatures from your hand to the battlefield for free. Or you can +1 it to give your dorks with power 4 or more hexproof and indestructible. This is bonkers in Type Four with infinite mana but just one spell per turn. Dropping two for free instead of one at instant speed? Love it much!
#21. Tinybones Joins Up AND Tinybones, the Pickpocket
This one drop legendary duo is next! The enchantment ETBs and has everyone, maybe not you, to discard and recur. (Note this targets for crime). Then when your legendary stuff ETBs, you can ting each (target here too) foe for life drained, and mill too, just you probably. Then the legendary dork has deathtouch to play keep away from bigger stuff and a 1/1 body. Then when it smashes face, likely early, you can cast a spell from their graveyard and your mana can be its types.
#20. Roxanne, Starfall Savant
Halfway on the Top 40 is our first Gruul legendary dork in today's list, this five drop rare 4/3 has two abilities!! When she ETBs or swings, you'll make a Meteorite token. Then when you tap artifact tokens for mana, they'll make another mana, like Treasures or Meteorites or Bananas. That doubling your mana on the Command Zone while making one is great fun and will likely lead to another new form of deck-age. Love this Savant loads!
#19. The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride
This has trample evasion and haste to swing out of nowhere from the Command Zone or your hand on arrival to the battlefield. Then this is a Mount with Saddle 1. When this smashes face with a saddled rider you (may) sac what saddled it and draw and ramp lands tapped equal to its power. Nasty! That's pretty fun from where I am sitting! It's great with cheap dorks with disadvantages you wanna kill like Rotting Regisaur to draw seven from a three drop.
#18. Bonny Pall, Clearcutter
From Gruul to Golgari to Simic, let's keep moving around the two color Green color wheel! Next is Selesnya! This adds a mana in six, and then has as a bigger size with a 6/5 size with reach, and then arrives to the battlefield with a legendary Ox with size equal to your land count, so win-con. Then when you swing with anything, you Explore. She is so good in all of the right space! She's in the right colors, she brings a friend, you draw and ramp when swinging. You can drop her pre-combat, swing with something else, and Explore. Love her loads!
#17. Claim Jumper
From three green multicolored legendary to the other color in White, is this three drop 3/3 vigilance critter here for her ETB ability! If a foe has more lands, you ramp out a Plains (note not basic, so it can be a dual land) from your library, and then if they still do, do it again once. Double ramp on an on curve 3/3 vigilance dork is why this Rabbit is here!
#16. The Common Desert Ping Cycle
This common (Pauper, Peasant) land cycle is next! They arrive tapped, tap for two colors of mana, count as Deserts for search, and then ting your opponent for a damage, counting as a crime in land form. You can bounce them with Karoo lands or Desert land Arid Archway to bounce and get another ting for another crime or just killing someone. This cycle is pretty good in all of the fun ways!
#15. Obeka, Splitter of Seconds
Everyone's favorite Ogre is next! She costs Grixis four for a 2/5 with menace evasion and a combat damage trigger with her, so swing at the player with just one dork untapped. However, much damage she deals, you'll get that many upkeep steps after this phase! Nasty! That's so broken, as our own Stephen has here (Obeka, Splitter of Seconds in Commander | Article by Stephen Johnson (coolstuffinc.com)). Note she is in the color of haste.
#14. Magda, the Hoardmaster
...just like her too! Our top scoring mono-Red card from the set (none hit last week) is this two drop rare, 2/2 Bear. She has two abilities. Did you commit a crime? Great, make a tapped Treasure, but just once per turn. You can turn three Treasures into a hasted 4/4 Scorpion Dragon with flying too, but only at sorcery speed. Do it pre-combat to swing in that combat over grounded dorks for 4 damage every three Treasures you have, which can be loads in mono-Red with her as your Commander. There are many mono-red classics, like Dockside, and then you can run her in other decks as the 99 too, or other formats. She's so awesomely awesome!
So, I hope you enjoyed my middle article, next week we'll finish this deep set!
