Top Ten Cards #2 from Battle for Baldur?s Gate

Reddit

Hello awesome folks! I hope your day is as awesome as you are! Today I want to look (again) at another ten slate (plus two Honorable Mentions) of cards from this set. Due to how powerful they are since they are not Standard or Modern-legal, we'll need more than last week's article (Check it out here) to really get a feel for the power and depth of this set. Most of these cards are pretty powerful, and there is little to separate them from each other, except for last week's #1 overall which I feel is a massive new hit for the world to experience. Today we have a colorless common hitting my top spot!

Ready?

Let's get this party started my friends!!!

Honorable Mention #1 (#24 Overall) - Lae'zel, Vlaakith's Champion

Lae'zel, Vlaakith's Champion

This 3-drop 3/3 is on curve. Whenever you would put counters on a dork or planeswalker, you put one more on, so this works well in White decks with +1/+1 counter theme (Abzan has them, as does Bant from this past set), a counters theme (Bant and Azorius also in New Capenna) planeswalker brews (all of the colors have them) and a deck that likely has more than one option (Atraxa, Praetor's Voice). With its background you can also choose and make your own color combo that works well, might I suggest Selesnya with its plethora of Doubling Season effects? Love its synergy here a bunch!

Honorable Mention #2 (#23 Overall) - Emerald Dragon

Emerald Dragon

Our first charting adventure, of three! This fun uncommon rocks flying and trample - double evasion, with a 4/4 body, unusual in Green. You can spend three mana to counter an activated or triggered from any source that ain't a creature. My favorite thing to do here would be to wreck fetchlands getting cracked like Polluted Mire and Evolving Wilds. Creatures are a rough non-option since you could stop removal (Duplicant, Flametongue Kavu) card draw (Mulldrifter, Cloudblazer), recursion (Sun Titan, Karmic Guide, Eternal Witness) and loads more and that's just ETB abilities not activated ones. That's why it falls to my second list in the Honorable Mention section

#10 (#22 Overall) Two-Handed Axe

Two-Handed Axe

Our next card is also a fun adventure card! When you drop this dork, you can double the power of the attacker, which is great in decks like Ziatora from the previous set and many others and you can double the speed of your Commander damage, and then also it stacks with double strike. You can spend two mana at instant speed to give something double strike as a combat trick or for combining with this for a massive amount of damage. Love it loads here!

#9. (#21 Overall) - Stonespeaker Crystal

Stonespeaker Crystal

I already tossed this mana rock into a Commander deck this week around Alora. Mana rocks that do things like sacrifice for a card after you are set mana wise are pretty good in Commander. This can be sacrificed for a card and act as a Bojuka Bog for your foes, nice brake on the powerful (ab)use of graveyards in your format! Love its power a lot here!

#8 (#20 Overall) - Astarion's Thirst

Astarion's Thirst

This is our 20th overall card! I love me some exiling removal at instant speed, since you can answer commonly played indestructible tricks like Rootborn Defenses and can respond immediately to an issue, enter the Thirst, a 4-mana instant exile effect, or just one more mana than a Murder to exile the dork, a nice trade. If your Commander is rocking the battlefield, you can give it +1/+1 counters equal to the power of the exiled dork, which turns this removal spell into a combat trick or a faster turn for Commander Kill out of nowhere. Creature kill? Combat trick? Player kill? Love it lots in Commander! But it's not really playable outside of that format in Five Color or Cube or other places where 4 mana is too much not to be able to exile anything other than a creature without any additional bonuses. It's feasible in Type Four where you have any amount of mana but just one spell per turn where exiling removal is nice no matter the cost.

#7. (#19 Overall) - Karlach, Fury of Avernus

Karlach, Fury of Avernus

If you are like me, then you know the power of Relentless Assaults in the Command Zone. Karlach is a 5 mana on-curve 5/4. When you swing with Karlach, you untap your attackers and they gain first strike and you get another combat phase after this one (only if this is your first attack). Then they have choose a background to add another color, and I like adding extra attacks in Boros since you can go wide with Boros Tokens or Boros Aggro, but Gruul gives you ramping for other things, black really improves your removal, and blue counters and cad draw and evasive bodies. I really like this with the Aggravated Assault infinite attacks with Bear Umbra in Gruul or the Sword that untaps your lands. Love this thang a lot!

#6. (#18 Overall) - Jan Jansen, Chaos Crafter

Jan Jansen, Chaos Crafter

This 3-drop 3/3 with haste is on curve, and in three colors for purposes of color identity. You can tap him to sacrifice an artifact creature like Solemn Simulacrum for a pair of Treasures, and then tap and sacrifice a non-creature artifact for a pair of 1/1 artifact dorks, so over time he can make a game winning amount of power. He adds a fun artifact/sacrifice theme to his colors, and can really play well in that build as a Commander, or in a four color non-Green build around Breya, Etherium Sculptor! Love it loads!!!

Top Five(ish...) Time!

#5. (#17 Overall) - Horn of Valhalla

Horn of Valhalla

Our second highest scoring artifact, top Adventure and White card that is not part of a cycle is this fun piece of equipment. Two mana to drop and three to equip, and then you can give your equipped dork a big boost in a going wide brew, and this works quite well on a Commander in a going wide brew to pump up its power into a strong winning position. It's broken with Green's Scepter of Celebration. Its sorcery spell is a powerful mass token maker later in the game that will provide a one-shot army and a Commander Kill with your leader in one blow. It's very powerful at the kitchen table!

#4. (#16 Overall) - Elminster's Simulacrum

Elminster's Simulacrum

There is a Clone Theme Commander deck. This is a 6-cost drop instant that makes a copy of each opponent's dork, so it scales up the more foes you have with creatures, so that drops it to my second list overall since this is way too pricey and limited in a normal dual. Love it in Type Four! Note that this is a non-creature way of making a Clone so it has added value in instant/sorcery matter brews like Guttersnipe, Young Pyromancer and loads more. Nice stuff for the win! Good in control and spellslinger brews.

#3. (#15 Overall) The Ancient Dragon Cycle

All five of these are awesome, and this cycle are my favorite cards from this set for Type Four since you have infinite mana, but they drop to my second list due to cost, which a lot of Commander decks are trimming, but these are incredible! Let's look at each in color order!

Ancient Gold Dragon
Ancient Silver Dragon

A nice sized 7/10 for 7 mana and flying, the Gold Dragon makes d20 1/1 flyers when it smashes face. That will win the game quite quickly even in a 40-life format like Commander, and you don't even need to toss it into a token deck, it works anywhere. I really like it as a control finisher. The Silver Dragon draws you a d20 number of cards on a pricier 8 mana 8/8 with flying when it smashes face and that's a massive amount of cardage. Even a low number like 5 is pretty much game. Love this pair a lot!

Ancient Brass Dragon
Ancient Copper Dragon
Ancient Bronze Dragon

The Brass Dragon is just a 7-mana 7/6 flyer, but when you punch a foe's face with it you can roll a d20 and then place that number of dorks with the total or less of mana value from any graveyards, not just your own. It plays very nice in big graveyard decks as well as a later game finisher. The Copper Dragon is a much cheaper 6/5 with flying and it makes that many Treasures, and they aren't tapped like modern Treasure mass makers. That's a ton of mana ramping and free spells each turn.

The Bronze Dragon is a 7-mana 7/7 flyer and it's d20 makes that many +1/+1 counters on any one or two dorks you control - ideal on a Commander and this can win alongside a Voltron deck. Note that these Ancient Dragons are not legendary so you cannot build around them in Commander but instead are a part of a 99. Love this cycle a load!!!

#2. (#14 Overall) - Tasha, the Witch Queen

Tasha, the Witch Queen

Our lowest scoring planeswalker and second highest card overall today is this fun planeswalker that can be your Commander! Note that she is a 5-drop with 4 loyalty with just two activation options. She can +1 to draw a card, and then each foe exiles an instant or sorcery from their graveyard with a page counter. You can also -3 her to cast the page countered stuff without spending any mana, and then you trigger her first ability to make a 3/3 dork. There are a bunch of ways to cast your opponents things in these two colors like last week's Gale's Redirection and Black's Draugr Necromancer. Good card to build around!

One card left and it's a common!!! What tops my chart and hits at #13 overall?

#1. (#13 Overall) Navigation Orb

Navigation Orb

This is my top spot! This costs three to drop and two to sacrifice and then gives you two basics and Gates lands, one ramped and one in your hand. This is a Cultivate/Kodama's Reach for any color of mana, and just cost's two more mana. This also has added synergies with artifact brews that can bring it back with things like Academy Ruins for more and more ramping. This is a powerful new tool for your consideration!

And there we go! Anything I missed or that you wanted to talk about more? Just let me know!
