Welcome back, everyone, for another week of budget Magic! We're going to talk some more about Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, among other cards, in Pioneer. I hope by the end of reading this, you consider picking up some of these cards for your trade binder!
Generous Visitor is our first card of note today. Coming in at $0.32 for non-foils and $0.42 for foil copies (mtgstocks.com), this is a steal for the foils. You could be easily running two copies of in decks utilizing enchantments and/or enchantment creatures. It could be a budget friendly option for those running enchantment heavy Commander decks as well. In Pioneer, decks that play Hardened Scales would absolutely love this card since it would double the effect each time it triggers. The other nice thing about the ability is that we can target any creature! With it only being a 1-drop there is way more upside than any downside. I am most certainly acquiring a playset for my own binder, and I suggest you do the same at its current price!
Next is Reinforced Ronin, another great 1-drop uncommon! The current price is $0.25 for non-foils, $0.35 for foils, $0.27 for the alternate art non-foil, and $0.95 for the foil alternate art (mtgstocks.com). In this case, I would pursue the alternate art foils. Reinforced Ronin is 1-drop with a lot of potential in any Red deck. It is seeing some play in Modern right now, and that is something to keep an eye on. I like this for a number of reasons, and one is that it synergizes well with a couple pet cards of mine in Reckless Fireweaver, Runaway Steam-Kin, and Shrapnel Blast.
I like the idea of being able to supply Runaway Steam-Kin with counters and being able to utilize Shrapnel Blast with potentially lethal damage. This also synergizes well with another card from Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, Dragonspark Reactor. If you were to play this turn two and keep playing Reinforced Ronin each turn, by turn five you would have at least three counters on it. If the game is going into turn seven, you could have five counters to deal five damage once you play Reinforced Ronin, and then use Shrapnel Blast for a total of 10 damage prior to attacking. Of course, if we are utilizing a card like Runaway Steam-Kin we can ramp faster into combos like that. This is another one that I will be eyeing up to get a playset of the alternate art foils in the coming weeks!
Speaking of Runaway Steam-Kin, that is what we are going to talk about next! The current price is $0.50 for non-foils, $4.25 for foils, and $3.64 the prerelease foils (mtgstocks.com). I felt this was going to be an all-star in Pioneer for Red decks. It gives Mono-Red the ability to ramp into cards without having to splash for another color! Not to mention you are beefing it up to be a potential attacker as well. If you want to go further and make it in a Gruul (Green/Red) deck there are plenty of cards, including Hardened Scales, that will bolster its effect. It seems pretty straightforward as it is everything you could ask for in a Red card and then some. You get speed with the ability to ramp, attack speed with potential power by giving it counters, and the ability to slow the pace down with a potential wall by giving it counters. I am not sure how high in price this thing could go, but where it currently sits is a bargain in my book!
Weaver of Harmony is our next card, and its price for non-foils is $1.19, $1.22 for foils, $4.75 for Promo pack non-foils, and $6.01 for Promo pack foils. For those who are just wanting value for their decks without spending much, snag up the non-foils. For those looking for something that has the potential to rise in price, the promo pack non-foil or prerelease foil is where I would look. This has the ability to do some work in Commander as well given its ability to copy both triggered and activated abilities for just one Green mana! How many times have you thought "man, I wish this ability could hit at least one more time"? Granted this is similar to Strionic Resonator, but this has the pro of only costing one mana instead of two. However, it does not have the same reach as Strionic Resonator, as it only can target enchantments and enchantment creatures.
Another thing to consider is that this is not a legendary creature, so we can run multiple copies on the battlefield if we so choose to! The lord aspect of giving other enchantment creatures +1/+1 is a secondary bonus in my opinion, but it is an awesome ability! There are so many great enchantment creatures out there and decks that utilize enchantment creatures, it would only make sense to add this into those decks. Considering it is only a 2-drop, there is more reward than risk in playing this card!
Stone Haven Outfitter has potential in the right build. I have always liked the idea of using it in combination with self-reanimating creatures to optimize the ability to draw a card. Its current price is $0.49 for non-foils, $0.94 for foils, and $1.37 for prerelease foils. This is one that has the most potential in Pioneer. Outside of self-reanimating creatures, White Weenie (Mono-White small creatures) decks could also utilize this. Why you might be asking? This will add a different speed element that weenie builds need to stay aggressive. No need to worry about your creatures dying after combat damage resolves as long as they are equipped! Chances are you should draw into another creature depending on the number of creatures you have in your deck. Combining this with an equipment card like Sword of the Animist would allow you to swiftly sift through your deck and slam those creatures out with haste! Optimally, I would use this in an Orzhov (White/Black) utilizing self-reanimating cards like Bloodsoaked Champion, and creatures that ping on "ETB" (enter the battlefield) or on creature death such as Zulaport Cutthroat, Cruel Celebrant, and Corpse Knight.
Last but not least for today, we have Hallowed Moonlight. Its current price is $0.49 for non-foils and $1.07 for foil copies. For a while I thought "this card sucks". However, given how the meta is in not only Pioneer but Modern is well, a card like Collected Company gets used a lot. This card will literally erase those cards into exile for only two mana, and we get to draw a card. Finale of Devastation is another card that we could counter using Hallowed Moonlight. I am not suggesting that this is a mainboard card, but note you can put 2 or maybe 3 in your sideboard if you feel those cards can be a headache for you. There are other cards that bring creatures in without casting, so definitely put this on your radar when looking to add to your collection!
That is all we have for today, folks. I hope you enjoyed the read and I will see you next time!
