Hanging Out With Carth and The Superfriends In Modern!

Reddit

Look, I understand that Adventures in the Forgotten Realms just released, but we still have a whole bunch of non-Ragavan, non-Urza's Saga cards from Modern Horizons 2 to try out! Have you read Carth the Lion?

It's not often you see a true planeswalker deck in Modern!

Grist, the Hunger Tide
Liliana, the Last Hope
Kaya, Orzhov Usurper

We're used to seeing Wrenn and Six, Liliana of the Veil, and Karn, the Great Creator in various Modern decks, but it's the newcomer Grist, the Hunger Tide that leads the charge of the three lesser known planeswalkers. Grist does a great job of providing both threats and answers, while Liliana, the Last Hope can kill small creatures or return Carth or Grist. Lastly, Kaya, Orzhov Usurper is excellent in a Modern format dominated by Lurrus, with things to kill in almost every matchup as well as some much-needed graveyard hate and life gain.

Arbor Elf
Utopia Sprawl
Oath of Nissa

Holding it all together is the popular and proven duo of Arbor Elf and Utopia Sprawl, allowing the deck to go up to Three mana on turn two, and occasionally four mana on turn two when drawn together which is huge. Oath of Nissa is also basically Ponder with upside in this deck, as the ability to make all of your planeswalkers super easy to cast is very nice.

As you saw in the video we struggled a bit against the more linear decks in the format, but were excellent at anything playing fair or wanting to grind. Sideboard tune-ups could definitely help the linear matchups, as long as you have a decent idea of what you're going to play against!
