After years of neglect from Wizards of the Coast, the Goblin tribe finally gets some new cards... but have they gone too far? It took a while, but modern Magic design of 2019 and 2020 has finally caught up to Goblins. First we had Conspicuous Snoop, a powerful 2-drop that created a simple two card, turn three combo kill in Modern as well as just being an excellent value engine, but now, we get Muxus, Goblin Grandee.
Oh boy.
Muxus, Goblin Grandee, from the new Jumpstart set, looks like a Commander product card at first glance. It's a large, legendary creature with a big splashy effect that doesn't look like it would have a place in more serious, competitive Magic. Crazy things happen all the time in Commander games and Muxus looks ready for that party, but Muxus is much more than a Commander card.
Muxus is a better version of three of the best and most prestigious Goblin cards ever printed. We get to go even deeper than Goblin Ringleader for card advantage, play things for free like Goblin Lackey without needing to deal combat damage, and create a monstrous attacker like Goblin Piledriver but with big toughness too!
The final product is terrifying.

It would be surprising if Muxus, Goblin Grandee is legal in Historic three months from now.
As you saw in the games, the deck is pretty broken. The Goblin deck was already solid in Historic, but when you add a six mana spell that perfectly synergies with the deck, usually wins the game on the spot, and is hard to interact with without counterspells, discard, or instant speed mass removal things get pretty wild.
The Black splash for the sideboard plans are awesome, helping to give you an edge in the mirror and creature matchups as well as against ramp and combo decks. Duress is also an option depending on how the metagame shakes out, as Temur Reclamation has been on the rise.
Ignore Goblins at your peril, as the deck is the real deal in Historic!
