Just like last week, this week I'll be showing another glimpse into my Pro Tour preparation for Pro Tour Lord of the Rings.
Before we left for Spain, our two biggest front-runners were the Yawgmoth deck I played last week, as well as the Dimir Ring Control deck we are playing today!

The idea behind this deck is reasonable; make use of the two most powerful cards in The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth and make tapping out for The One Ring work for us by playing a bunch of pitch counterspells.
However, as we see in the video as well as we'd find out through more testing, the deck has the same issues that many control decks have in Modern day Magic - things need to line up properly. If they don't and something sneaks through, or you've got the wrong answer at the wrong time, things start to fall apart very quickly. Furthermore, The One Ring is a scary card to have in your deck when you aren't planning on ending the game quickly or consistently gaining life.
This evaluation ended up proving true, as Dimir Ring Control only had a 45% win rate at Pro Tour The Lord of the Rings, and this set of matches is a good showing of why and how we came to that conclusion. You only end up ever choosing one deck for a big event, so seeing how to eliminate the other choices is very valuable!
