No that's not a typo!
The finals of the 1821 player US Regional Championship last weekend was a Rakdos mirror, but probably not the one you expected. Rakdos Vampires was, of course, banned recently, but the commonly seen Rakdos Midrange and Rakdos Sacrifice had nothing to do with this finals.
Instead, it was Rakdos Tree of Perdition combo taking home the trophy in the hands of Cory Lack over Rakdos Transmogrify combo!
Time Stamps:
02:32 - Match 1
10:37 - Match 2
20:56 - Match 3
Rakdos Tree Combo | Pioneer | Cory Lack, 1st place US Regional Championship
- Companion (1)
- 1 Jegantha, the Wellspring
- Creatures (18)
- 2 Marvin, Murderous Mimic
- 4 Bloodtithe Harvester
- 4 Fear of Missing Out
- 4 Tree of Perdition
- 4 Voldaren Thrillseeker
- Instants (5)
- 1 Torch the Tower
- 4 Fatal Push
- Sorceries (6)
- 2 Duress
- 4 Thoughtseize
- Enchantments (4)
- 4 Fable of the Mirror-Breaker // Reflection of Kiki-Jiki
- Artifacts (4)
- 4 Agatha's Soul Cauldron
The goal is simple enough; use Agatha's Soul Cauldron to give the ability of Tree of Perdition to a small creature, tap it to make your opponent's life total very low, and then finish them off with Voldaren Thrillseeker.
This can be done with both cards exiled to Agatha's Soul Cauldron, or by just playing Thrillseeker and using the Cauldron on it or another creature. Marvin, Murderous Mimic is also another path to give the deck some redundancy.
This deck is also just another example of how powerful Fable of the Mirror-Breaker and Bloodtithe Harvester are in these combo shells, providing you with a ton of velocity toward your combo that can also just win the game by themselves in a pinch.
Cory is actually a longtime proponent of this deck and has written a 12,000 word guide which you can find here. It's good to see deck specialists get rewarded!
