Casting Spells: Who Could Play Garruk Wildspeaker

Reddit

While Magic: The Gathering fans have been voicing their excitement for the recently announced movie, details about the plot are vague. Or, more accurately, details are nonexistent. Will we get an adaptation of the Weatherlight Saga? Follow Glissa's journey to avenge her parents? See one of our favorite Planeswalkers as their Spark ignites? Or get an entirely new story?

Without any plot or characters revealed, we're free to speculate on who could play the various characters we expect to see in the first movie, and it's a safe bet that we'll see at least one of the Planeswalkers who have been central characters since they were first revealed in 2007's Lorwyn set.

It seems plausible that we'll see at least one of the Lorwyn Five, the original Planeswalkers, most of whom are still active. So today we're taking a look at who could play the original Green planeswalker, Garruk Wildspeaker.

Who Is Garruk Wildspeaker?

Garruk Wildspeaker is a bit of a hermit, choosing to live as one with nature and aspire to be a predator. As such, he's impatient and direct, is an excellent hunter and tracker, and prefers to confront problems head-on.

Physically, Garruk is a giant of a man, standing at over eight feet tall, heavily muscled and bearded. His body is covered with markings like body paint, and he wields an enormous axe. While he normally wears a helmet covering most of his head and face, beneath it the patterns on his body extend up to his scalp.

Any actor playing Garruk needs to match him physically, which narrows down the field to a short list of candidates. Here are my top five picks:

5. Patrick Warburton

Garruk is taller than any living human in the real world, so there will be some special effects to make up the difference. That could be as simple as clever photography, like how Steve Jackson turned the the 6'1" John Rhys-Davies into a dwarf, or CGI in the style used for The Hulk and Thanos.

In the latter scenario, Patrick Warburton has the voice I want to hear coming from the Wildspeaker. Easily recognized from roles like Joe Swanson and Kronk, his deep voice is often used for comedic effect. But the more serious intonations of Brock Samson, the Swedish murder machine from The Venture Bros.,

4. Dave Bautista

Dave Bautista's most famous role to date is Drax, the Destroyer, from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. The character is bombastic and aggressive, and it's easy to imagine Garruk with the same unbridled exuberance as he leaps onto the back of a Wurm or Wumpus that he's tracked down.

Drax's lack of awareness of social norms is played for comedic effect, and would probably be toned down for Garruk. But Bautista has demonstrated his ability to play more serious characters in Knock at the Cabin and Dune. The middle ground between these roles might be the perfect adaptation for the Wildspeaker.

3. Dwayne Johnson

Dwayne Johnson is an obvious pick for Garruk: He's a huge, physically intimidating guy with experience in action movies from Hercules to Red One, and enough star power to draw in audiences who aren't already invested in the Magic: The Gathering franchise.

Johnson is often criticized for playing every character the same way: His Red One character, Callum Drift, is virtually indistinguishable from his Rampage character, Davis Okoye. Garruk, a large, intimidating, impatient macho man, fits Johnson's acting style perfectly.

Unfortunately, the famous "no-loss clause" in Johnson's contract could make it difficult to write in Garruk's most famous conflict, between himself and Liliana Vess. He's also reached the level of fame where it's unlikely that you'll find him in a supporting role, further making it difficult to build a cinematic universe that includes him without Johnson becoming the focus.

2. Jason Momoa

Jason Momoa may not have the star power of Dwayne Johnson, but the gap is shorter than Garruk's temper. That small difference in fame means that Momoa could play both a supporting role in a larger universe, like Aquaman in Justice League, or a leading role in his own film, like Aquaman in Aquaman.

Portrayed by Momoa, it's easy to envision Garruk embodying the hunter in social settings, sitting a bit off to the side, slightly out of focus, while he studies the words and gestures of other characters, sizing them up as potential threats or prey.

Momoa is also a close physical match to Garruk: At 6'4" he's taller enough to tower over his costars, has a superhero physique, and his signature long hair and beard mirror the Green Planeswalker. Just don't expect the helmet to stay on too long, covering his ruggedly handsome face.

1. Hafthor Julius Bjornsson

Probably best known for his role as The Mountain in Game of Thrones, Hafthor Bjornsson is considered by many to be the strongest man to ever have lived. At 6'9", nobody is a better physical match for Garruk.

While Bjornsson does have a handful of acting roles under his belt, he doesn't usually have a lot of lines. But that's fine for Garruk, who spends most of his time alone in the woods rather than engaging in social interactions.

Hasbro and Legendary may not want a cast full of big names competing for the central role and demanding record-breaking payments, which would further favor Bjornsson. While recognizable, he's by no means a household name, allowing the character of Garruk to shine without being overshadowed by the actor's fame.
