As Autumn falls upon certain areas of the world, its vibrant colors and wild energy reminds me of the Red and Green pairing Gruul. Gruul commanders are wild and explosive, and from all the colors pairings in Magic: the Gathering, they embody the season's ferocity the most.
Here are the top five Gruul commanders that tear through the battlefield sowing chaos onto the table and bringing you closer to a win!
5. Jolene, the Plunder Queen
Breaking faces and taking names is something that most Magic: the Gathering players associate with both Green and Red. Jolene's fists breaks faces (and glass) like no other. This Human Warrior is a Gruul queen that sows discord among your opponents as she gives Treasure tokens to those who attack anyone but you. Jolene, the Plunder Queen does her best Parallel Lives impression and gives you one additional Treasure token when you create one or more. (Hint: try and trigger that individually as much as you can and you'll swim in riches in no time.) Yes, she starts out as a 2/2 for four mana but if you sacrifice five Treasures, Jolene becomes a meaner Red-Green machine by buffing herself with five +1/+1 counters.
Treasure makers fromthe recently released Bloomburrow and Outlaws of Thunder Junction are amazing includes: Alchemist's Talent, Prosperous Bandit, and Generous Plunderer are top picks. Other must-haves are Academy Manufactor, Bootleggers' Stash, and Tireless Provisioner - all treasure all-stars!
Focus on treasure synergies and Jolene is sure to get that mana for you.
4. Meria, Scholar of Antiquity
When this Elf Artificer was spoiled for Dominaria United, I admit I scratched my head a bit since both Red and Green are known for artifact destruction. So, it was strange for me when Meria, Scholar of Antiquity cared a lot about artifacts. Unlike Jolene, the Plunder Queen, Meria synergized off of nontoken artifacts. Tapping an artifact would give you one Green mana, and tapping two would give you an Impulse draw. All this for a 3/3 for three mana. Meria is basically ramp and card advantage rolled into one.
She's not that flashy or as brutish as some would expect from a Gruul commander but when built the Cheerious way (read: zero-mana artifacts) she's an engine unto herself. Pack your deck with these cheapos (R.I.P to Mana Crypt and Jeweled Lotus, Meria misses you like a severed hand): Ornithopter, Welding Jar, Tormod's Crypt, and Mishra's Bauble. Artifact Lands also get additional use so consider Great Furnace, Darksteel Citadel, Tree of Tales, and Treasure Vault. One super powered addition that would help you churn through your deck is Mystic Forge. Meria is an artifact matters commander that off Gruul's beaten track but will still deliver a win.
3. Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes
Okay, full disclosure: Baldur's Gate 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. And five out of my seven playthroughs have included Minsc in my party because he's just big dumb fun to have. Sure, sometimes planeswalkers in the command zone get a bad rap, but Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes is too cool and cute not to run. For four mana, this planeswalker duo provides you with a 1/1 Hamster (Boo!) when it enters and every upkeep. Why does it do so? Well, because its -2 ability sacrifices a creature and flings them to any target dealing X damage equal to its power. Why would you want to fling Boo at anyone? Because if you sac a Hamster, you also draw X cards! Damage and draw? Sign me up!
The +1 ability also add three counters to a creature with trample and haste - which Boo coincidentally has. One obvious way to build this deck is to get to buffing your hamster to gigantic proportions. I wouldn't go with auras or the +1/+1 counter route but passive buffs from anthems like Beastmaster Ascension, Gaea's Anthem, and Gruul War Chant[/card] are things I prefer.
But, if your Boo is feeling lonely, you can put other Hamsters in the deck. [card]Taurean Mauler, Chameleon Colossus, and Maskwood Nexus brings more Shapeshifters errr... hamsters to the party too! So, go for the eyes with abandon.
2. Xenagos, God of Revels
Since Theros dropped way back in 2013, Gods have been a popular creature type in Commander. The Gruul god of revelry, Xenagos, is a perennial favorite given his indestructibility and buffing effect. He's straight forward as five mana 6/5, he goes online as a creature when your devotion to Green and Red is seven. What makes him popular is how, at the beginning combat, he gives a creature double the power and haste. So, imagine any beatstick you want and Xenagos enables it to swing fast and hit hard.
Taking advantage of high-power creatures is the order of the day so Garruk's Uprising, Elemental Bond, and Greater Good are good choices for card draw. Xenagos loves combat so adding in Bloodthirster, Moraug, Fury of Akoum, Karlach, Fury of Avernus, and Aggravated Assault is almost mandatory. Revel as you attack, that's how Xenagos throws a party!
1. Etali, Primal Conqueror // Etali, Primal Sickness
When people think about commander, most think of battlecruiser - wherein players send out the biggest and baddest creatures they have against each other. In the format, there are few as big and as bad as Blightsteel Colossus. As an 11/11 with infect, this Golem could one shot any player by giving them 10 poison counters. Fortunately, it's not a legendary creature so it can't be your commander.
Enter Etali, Primal Conqueror. March of Machines gave us Blightsteel Colossus in the command zone. Well, when flipped so it does take some work to get an 11/11 infect, trampling, indestructible Phyrexian Elder Dinosaur out. For seven mana, Etali, Primal Conqueror comes down and exiles cards from everyone and casts the first nonland card for free. For nine mana and 2 life, you can transform it to Etali, Primal Sickness - the one-shot machine.
Ramp is the name of the game here as both Etali's casting cost and activated ability cost a million mana. Throw all of the dorks Delighted Halfling, Birds of Paradise, Fanatic of Rhonas, Llanowar Elves, and Fyndhorn Elves in. Get all your ramp spells out like Rampant Growth, Farseek, Three Visits, and Nature's Lore. Even rituals like Jeska's Will, Seething Song, and Pyretic Ritual coz we want this big beastie out pronto.
Getting free value from Etali is also another winning strategy and we're not limited to Panharmonicon as Red has Twinflame, Molten Duplication, and Heat Shimmer in its repertoire. Etali is a value commander firstly and a one-shot poison machine second.
Gruul Smash
These top five Gruul commanders harness nature's fury into a relentless force that's sure to smash through your next Magic: the Gathering game. Ramp and big beasties, what's not to love about Gruul?
