Unique and Powerful Mythic Rares from Modern Horizons 3

Reddit

Hello everyone! I'm Levi from The Thought Vessel Show, and as promised, we're highlighting some really neat mythic rares from the strongest set of 2024, Modern Horizons 3. Note that I am only looking at cards from the actual set, not the commander preconstructed product. I am also focusing on new cards and ignoring reprints for now. Let's begin!

Emrakul, the World Anew

Emrakul, the World Anew - The first of our three new iterations of the Eldrazi Titans, Emrakul, the World Anew has the absolutely backbreaking effect of stealing all of the creatures of one of your opponents. The protection from spells and permanents cast this turn is quite annoying, and the madness cost of six colorless mana makes this new Eldrazi an auto-include in most big mana or Eldrazi tribal decks.

Kozilek, the Broken Reality

Kozilek, the Broken Reality - Kozilek is the weakest of the three titans, but its effect is very intriguing. For those of you who don't know, manifesting a card puts it into play face down as a colorless 2/2 creature, similar to the updated version with "disguise." This card will either take out a total of four cards from your opponent's hands or let you manifest yourself to make a pair of 5/4 creatures since Kozilek's buff will work on them as well. If you have big threats in your hand that you might worry about being countered, the manifest ability will get them into play to be turned over later.

Ulamog, the Defiler

Ulamog, the Defiler - The third and final Eldrazi on our list is Ulamog, the Defiler. Upon casting, you can exile half of an opponent's library, leaving decks that rely on toolbox strategies or combos to win effectively in the dust. On top of that, Ulamog grows based on the highest mana value of those cards exiled. Conservatively, let's say the highest mana value in a casual commander game is around seven. In that case, Ulamog is attacking as a 14/14 creature, and the defending player is sacrificing seven permanents. Absolutely brutal. This card is amazing.

Ugin's Labyrinth

Ugin's Labyrinth - I will admit it is a bit odd to have two different spells named after the planeswalker Ugin in a Masters set with multiple planeswalkers and not actually make a new Ugin. But hey, these cards are neat. Still hovering around the $60 mark, Ugin's Labyrinth allows you to imprint a seven-mana value or higher colorless permanent underneath this card. If you do, it will tap for 2 mana instead of one, making it very helpful early on. When you have enough mana, simply tap the labyrinth to put the card back into your hand to cast. Is a land that comes in tapped effective in the early and late game? Sign me up!

Ugin's Binding

Ugin's Binding - Of all the card designs I had on my bingo card this year, a bounce spell that turns into a Cyclonic Rift from your graveyard was not on there. The only catch? You have to cast a colorless spell with a mana value of seven or greater. In an Eldrazi deck, this is extremely easy to pull off. I really enjoy the power design of this card and that it isn't a staple that goes into every single deck. I'm looking forward to playing it!

Ocelot Pride

Ocelot Pride - This feels like a great value piece for a commander that becomes even stronger in faster formats. For 1 mana, getting a first strike, lifelinking, token-making cat is probably already going to see play by itself, but getting the city's blessing and effectively becoming a token doubler makes this card absolutely cracked.

Arna Kennerud, Skycaptain

Arna Kennerud, Skycaptain - Probably one of the more unique legendary creatures to come out of this set, Arna Kennerud, Skycaptain, is an equipment/aura themed deck that focuses on doubling up the equipment and auras on the attacking creature. This type of deck, though a bit slower than its equipment/voltron counterparts including Red, has a lot more opportunities to pull off amazing turns. Imagine getting three, four, or even five copies of Sword of Fire and Ice onto a creature and the absolute devastation that could cause your opponents, let alone if you can give that creature double strike. As a huge fan of knights, equipment, and Esper as a color, I'm looking forward to brewing with this card.

Eladamri, Korvecdal

Eladamri, Korvecdal - Striking the balance between an Elvish Piper and a Future Sight, this is a very intriguing card. I could see decks that are playing a ton of creatures really wanting this to get around casting expensive spells or avoiding the risk of getting countered. Any card that lets you see your next card up without revealing it I believe to be an incredibly underrated effect. I'll be curious to see what level of play this card sees.

Necrodominance

Necrodominance - This is a very interesting card to evaluate since it is impossible not to compare it to its inspiration, Necropotence. The major downsides of this card in comparison are that it reduces your hand size down to five and exiles cards going to your graveyard from anywhere, not just discarded. On the bright side, it counts as a draw, which could be helpful for Sheoldred and other drawing/wheel strategies, and the legendary tag could provide additional synergies for decks like Sisay, Weatherlight Captain, and Jodah, the Unifier. I think if a deck wants to run Necropotence, it will be nice to effectively have an extra copy.

Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student // Tamiyo, Seasoned Scholar

Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student // Tamiyo, Seasoned Scholar - For 1 mana, this is a very impressive card. The floor of this card is getting a clue token and a little damage prevention. The ceiling of half of your library in one go and no longer having a hand size is truly insane. This is very impressive, and I'm sure it will see a lot of play in and out of the command zone.

Well, there you have it! These are the mythic rare cards I'm most excited for from Modern Horizons 3. Thank you for reading. Until next time!
