Ten of the Best Rares and Mythics from Phyrexia: All Will Be One

Reddit

Hello, everyone! I'm Levi from The Thought Vessel Show, and today we're diving into some of the most interesting Mythics and Rares from Phyrexia: All Will Be One. This set marks the first part of the two-part Phyrexian invasion series (or three parts if you count Aftermath). In this article, I won't be ranking these cards in any particular order; instead, I'm celebrating some of the coolest designs from a memorable chapter in Magic's history. Since we're focusing exclusively on All Will Be One, I'll only be discussing cards from the main set, so no entries from the supplemental precon releases. With those ground rules set, let's dive right in!

1) Mondrak, Glory Dominus

Mondrak, Glory Dominus

We've seen a healthy number of token doublers in Magic, but very few are as resilient to removal or board wipes as Mondrak. Token decks are inherently vulnerable to sweepers, so it's crucial to have ways to protect your board, prevent sweepers, or rebuild as quickly as possible. By doubling your tokens, it ensures that any army you create will rebuild in half the time. But what makes Mondrak particularly powerful is its ability to become indestructible. For just one white mana and two life, you can sacrifice two other artifacts or creatures, giving Mondrak a significant edge. This makes it a key piece in any token strategy, allowing you to recover from board wipes and keep pressure on your opponents.

2) Skrelv, Defector Mite

Skrelv, Defector Mite

Skrelv, Defector Mite offers a fresh take on the classic "Mother of Runes" effect. As a legendary creature, Skrelv brings its own unique benefits to the table. It not only provides protection against targeted removal by granting hexproof from a chosen color. Additionally, Skrelv is an artifact, which opens up interesting synergies with artifact tutors and strategies that benefit from artifacts. However, this also makes it more susceptible to artifact removal. Being legendary, Skrelv can be tutored with both Sisay, Weatherlight Captain, and Captain Sisay, making it a versatile addition to various decks that rely on legendary creatures or artifacts.

3) Ichormoon Gauntlet

Ichormoon Gauntlet

Ichormoon Gauntlet is one of the most exciting additions for "superfriends" decks in recent memory. It brings a lot to the table for planeswalker-heavy strategies. The +0 proliferate ability is perfect for planeswalkers that are played mainly for their static effects, giving them longevity and allowing you to build up loyalty counters without spending your loyalty abilities. The -12 ability to take an extra turn is particularly powerful in decks that can consistently build up loyalty counters, turning it into a win condition on its own. I've tested this card in several of my decks, and it has proven to be as effective as advertised.

4) Zopandrel, Hunger Dominus

Zopandrel, Hunger Dominus

Zopandrel may not have the flashiest abilities, but what it offers is pure power. We've seen effects like this in the past, doubling the power of creatures, but Zopandrel comes with a twist: it's indestructible. As an indestructible, legendary creature that can double your entire board's power, it's a Timmy player's dream card.

5) Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines

Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines

Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines has been a controversial card since its announcement, with some players calling for its ban even before it hit the shelves. In true praetor fashion, this card amplifies your enter-the-battlefield effects while simultaneously shutting down those of your opponents. This asymmetric effect makes it incredibly potent in decks that rely heavily on ETB triggers, such as blink or stax strategies.

6) Ovika, Enigma Goliath

Ovika, Enigma Goliath

Ovika is a card that has intrigued many players since its release. As a commander, it offers a unique playstyle that revolves around casting big spells to generate an army of Phyrexian Goblin tokens with haste. This aggressive approach can quickly overwhelm opponents, especially when combined with extra turn or extra combat spells. It rewards creative deck-building and provides a fun and dynamic challenge for players who enjoy playing large instants or sorceries.

7) Atraxa, Grand Unifier

Atraxa, Grand Unifier

Atraxa, Grand Unifier is one of the most exciting new commanders for cEDH, especially in Food Chain strategies. Its ETB ability allows you to selectively rebuild your hand by revealing the top ten cards of your library and putting one card of each type into your hand. This can provide an enormous amount of card advantage, making Atraxa a force to be reckoned with. Beyond the impressive ETB effect, Atraxa brings a formidable body with flying, lifelink, deathtouch, and vigilance. While the seven-mana cost may seem steep, the value it provides is more than worth the investment. In the right deck, Atraxa can be a game-ending powerhouse.

8) Zenith Chronicler

Zenith Chronicler

Chronicler represents a new wave of cards I like to call "reverse stax." Instead of directly preventing opponents from taking certain actions, it punishes them by giving benefits to their opponents. This card effectively taxes multicolored spells by drawing each of your opponents a card when a player casts a multicolored spell. While this effect could be seen as a disadvantage, it might also be perceived as a "group hug" effect, depending on the playgroup.

9) The Eternal Wanderer

The Eternal Wanderer

I absolutely love The Eternal Wanderer. This planeswalker is an incredibly versatile card that can perform multiple roles in a deck. First, only one creature can attack it each combat, making it easy to protect. It also offers a repeatable board wipe that leaves one creature per player, which can be devastating in the right situation. Additionally, it has the ability to create tokens and blink out both your or your opponents' creatures. This card can do it all!

10) All Will Be One

All Will Be One

Roll credits! All Will Be One is an incredibly fascinating card. It offers combo potential at the highest levels of play, going infinite with cards like War Elemental and The Red Terror. Since its wording around counters is intentionally broad, this card can slot into a variety of decks--from +1/+1 counter strategies to planeswalker-heavy builds. Its ability to deal damage based on any type of counter added is unique and allows for some highly creative deck-building possibilities.

And there you have it! I hope this list has helped you discover your new favorite card from this set. As always, if you're interested in picking up any of these cards, be sure to check out CoolStuffInc's inventory. Until next time, happy gaming!
